(SJS/VGK) - Hertl, 2025 3rd (SJS), 2027 3rd (SJS) for Edstrom, 2025 1st (VGK)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CapFriendly</b></div><div>Trade confirmed: San Jose Sharks - Vegas Golden Knights</div></div>
I think this is a pretty fair trade. Sharks get a 19 yr old Swede who has good size and a lot of upside plus another 1st round pick next year which just complements their other 17 draft picks in the next 2 years! They get rid of $6.75 M of cap hit on a guy who has been injury prone and starting to age and decline a little bit. I think Hertl has 2-3 good years left 50-60 point seasons in him before his hips, knee really start to catch up to him.
The biggest thing I don’t like about this is SJ retention … even 17% is still too much. Hertl’s contract and even more important his term of 6 years left really hindered them here, + the fact he had a NMC so he likely told SJ he would only go to a contender in the west. I have no clue how Vegas will afford him after this season when he’s off LTIR.. especially with all the other massive contracts. VGK is clearly in an “all in WIN NOW” mode. But holy s**** are they going to be sooo bad in 4-5 years from now. They have ZERO draft picks or prospects. While the Sharks who arguably have a top 3 prospect pool will begin to dominate the league just like they did back for 20 yrs in 2000’s/2010’s. .

A bunch of junk ? I think you’re forgetting the fact that Hanifin and Backlund have 20 games left on their contracts and will become free agents. So it’s either you let them go for 3 NHL pieces, Robertson , 1st + 3rd or nothing at all on July 1st. I’d love to see what you’d come up with… nothing because you’re a spectator , just like the entire CGY roster.

Bottom line, with their current roster you’re looking at another 1st round exit. This roster here whether it be all these moves or just one of them, would instantly make the Leafs a better more balanced team ready for a deep playoff run. They’re going no where with their current inconsistent goaltending and flaky Defense.

(ANA/PHI) - Drysdale, 2025 2nd (ANA) for Gauthier
Slight edge to the Ducks now.. but this is one of those trades where you won’t know who the true winner is until 3-4 years down the line. I think Gauthier potential and ceiling is much higher then Drysdale’s but then again we’re talking about two completely different positions.
Clearly if Drysdale can stay healthy and put up 40 point seasons soon then I will say this is a fair deal but I think Gauthier is an NHL now 50-60 point guy in 2-3 years and the Ducks youth are looking filthy.. I see Gauthier as a more versatile Evander Kane.

Will it be his fault? No.</div></div>
They 100% should have locked him up last summer 2023 after they lost in playoffs. Could’ve gotten him for
$9-10M AAV and saved some $$ for depth players. Their top two Forward lines might be sick but after that they’ll have to fill their roster with a bunch of AHL/ECHL guys making league minimum just to stay under the cap. What a joke. This team will continue to have defensive/goaltending issues forever.

Not surprised one bit by this deal. I had him making
$11-12M AAV .. maybe a tad more on the open market. Nothing wrong with that Nylander is worth that. The problem Toronto has is they’ve got 4 forwards making WAAAY too much $$$ and not to say they aren’t worth what they’re making but in the modern day salary cap NHL you CANNOT afford to pay 4 guys $10-13M AAV and think you’re going to win… let alone 4 f’in Forwards. The leafs will HAVE to part ways with either Tavares or Marner. Their defense and goaltending is atrocious and has been for a decade. No clue how they’ll get out of this one. Treliving better hope he’s got some magic up his sleeve to figure out the rest of this lineup or else Toronto may have to petition the league and only skate with 14 players during games.

We could probably grab Kuemper with our 24'1st and a prospect like Savoie so why complicate things? Kuemper is the only one I have interest in
Foegele > Duclair
Those other two pieces are worth a 2nd combined so big overpayment there
Flames reject they can get much more by trading Tanev and Hanafin seperately and I'd rather us keep Mcleod</div></div>
Sounds to me like you’re just content with losing in the playoffs yet again to the Avs, Vegas, LA, or Winnipeg.. because all of those teams have way better structure and depth then the Oilers. The point of these trades is to offer new perspective and new defensive minded players. Of course in the long term none of these trades look good for the Oilers but short term they all offer something the Oilers need and that’s grit, defense , puck possession/keeping goals out of their net.

Sharks would entertain an offer on anyone but one thing they won’t do is take on any bad contracts like Campbell. Edmonton is better off just buying him out themselves.
As for that trade with AZ.. that doesn’t get the Oilers what they need. They need to improve their back end . Durzi is an offensive guy/PP specialist.. they already had that with Tyson Barrie a while back and look how that worked out. You need to sacrifice RNH or a top 6 forward for 1-2 big shutdown D men or defensive forwards.

Okay take away the 1M and transfer it over to Hanifin ? Lmao.. ur point is? Calgary is a **** hole of a city and their arena is the oldest in the league .. there’s a reason Johnny G left along with many other guys . You talk about high Tax California .. how about the high way robbery tax that is Canada .. not to mention it’s turning into an absolute communist country under Trudeau. After the Sharks land #1 Celebrini this year they’re only 2 years removed from becoming a playoff team.. the weather is especially appealing to guys who have played up north. If Nylander wants the most $$ he’s going to sign with a rebuilding team that’s got great up and coming prospects who are a few years away from being a contender. The Sharks are one of those teams. Or he can stay in Toronto for 8x9-10M and make less cuz of tax …

I agree but they’ve already been really bad since 2020.. that’s almost 4 years now of below .500 hockey. They’ve had solid draft picks the past 3 years and this next draft might land them the #1 pick for the first time ever. I think that’s more than enough rebuilding time to start adding some younger FA pieces asap.

I think you gotta get at least 1 top line Forward and 1 Top D man from FA to solidify the roster for when guys like Smith, Celebrini , etc come to the NHL. Both Nylander and Hanifin are only 26 years old … Sharks don’t need to suck for another several seasons I think in 2 years they will be in the playoff picture with the prospects they’ve got coming in.

Everyone saying that SJ lost this are complete idiots. In 2-3 years you'll all be saying wow look how young and good SJ is. All the moves they’ve made over the past 4 seasons have been for a reason. They have 3-4 grade A prospects in the pipeline and 5-6 B+ guys who will be coming up around the same time to fill out those bottom 6 roles. Very good depth in the system.
Every 10-15 years we see a flip in the Standings with teams. SJS, CBJ, CHI, ANA, BUF are all about to be very good very soon. While TBL, BOS, VGK, PIT, FLA, etc will start to fall.

I would not call that “light” there’s many teams that don’t have any grade A prospects and you just named 3-4 of them for the Sharks.
Bystedt, Musty and Coe are also 3 guys who have very good bottom 6 potential as well. It’s not just the goal scorers that you need but productive bottom end guys who kill penalties, play a 2 foot game and can be aggressive on the forecheck. When SJ had their 2016 run their bottom 6 guys were exactly that way. Every team that wins a cup wins due to their depth because those 3-4 games during the playoffs when your top line guys aren’t showing up is when you need the unsung hero’s to step up.

SJ fans trying to back track like they all wanted to just dump salary when a week ago they wanted 3 first round assets for EK alone. Just stop. SJ also isnt competing anytime soon. Goodluck Pens are pretty close to being irrelevant with ZERO prospects in the pipeline. 1960’s-80’s Trash Penguins all over again.. crazy to think they’re still just the 4-5th “best” team in the Metro even after this trade. Wouldn’t be surprised if they miss the playoffs yet again.. with an aging injury prone core.
Come back in April and tell me how this trade looks. SJ won long term. In 2-3 years they’ll have 6 grade A prospects on the NHL roster making a name for themselves. They’ll be the next Devils , young talented core with tons of Cap space to add to FA’s.

EK’s huge contract and age.. his 100+ season was an insane year. I hope he can replicate it again but honestly i don’t see that happening he’ll probably be 60-70 point guy this year. Pitt better hope that everyone can stay healthy because in that division they are 4th maybe 5th best team on paper.. that gets you barely a wild card into the playoffs.. depending on what the Atlantic does.

Interesting trade, not quite sure what Pitt is thinking with the whole retaining thing? They get SJ to retain 1.5M off EK but then turn around and retain 1.5M off Petry for MTL? It’s a complete wash , makes no sense.
Dubas wants so bad to win NOW with Pitt to prove himself.. it’s either going 1 of two ways.. either Pitt wins a cup .. which is probably only a 2 year window left or they miss playoffs again/have major injuries and now they’re stuck with paying two RD 16M for the next 4+ years , not a good look. Dubas will be Axed from the league if this doesn’t work out. His handling of contracts and inability to get Toronto over the top with that talent .. what makes u think he can do it with 4 aging 35+ year old star players ? He better be praying.
EK thrives off being “THE GUY” there’s a reason why he struggled when Burns was still in SJ. You can’t have two OFD with EK, he needs to be out there on every PP playing 26+ minutes a night.
SJ comes away as the winner in this all. In 2 years from now it’ll be even more obvious. They dump EK’s huge contract, get 1st round pick and two proven serviceable 2/3rd liners that are responsible 2 way forwards who can teach SJ’s young guys coming up. If both healthy Granlund and Hoff are 50 point guys . Only thing I would’ve like to see is SJ get a B+ or higher level prospect out of this. They only took Rutta because Pitt needed to dump some cap. SJ is 3-4 years away from being a contender again, this window they’ll be free off all bad contacts, Burns, EK, Vlasic, etc They’ll have some solid prospects coming in and will have a ton of cap space to sign some FA’s.
