Sujet: Cup Team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Timmah007</b></div><div>I doubt flames accept that. Top centre and hanifin who is young and signed to a very good long term deal... I know cozens is nothing to sneeze at and I think it’s a perfect spot to send risto just removing too much from flames current line up.</div></div>

As a Flames fan, I don't mind this at all. Really interesting proposal, so props to @csik. A few things:

1. Calgary is not interested in Ristolainen. Brian Bruke was explaining on Sportsnet how when he was still with the team, Calgary actually pursued a deal for Ristolainen. When it got close to being a done deal, Calgary's analytically-focused assistant GM, Chris Snow (who by the way is currently doing an awesome job fighting ALS - check out his story), said that it would be a bad deal because of Risto's underlying analytical numbers. Calgary's upper management really values Snow's opinion, so as soon as Snow said no, the team dropped the negotiation all together. Given that all most of management is still in tact, I can't imagine Calgary has changed their stance on the player.
2. I very much like Cozens. The fact that they would be willing to give him up, as well as a first round pick, is enticing for the Flames.
3. It is my personal opinion that the Flames trade Monahan before Gaudreau, so think this trade idea nails it.
4. Yes Hanifin is young and has a decent contract, but he's not been perfect for the Flames either. I think the team would be willing to move him for the right price.

Lots to think about on this, it is interesting.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rb1481</b></div><div>I think you are over-valuing your prospect here. If you go by the article here (yes, I know they are all subjective) - <a href="https://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-top-100-prospects-ranking/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-top-100-prospects-ranking/</a>, it lists Addison at #79 and Nolan Foote at #53. Those guys were traded plus a 1st for Jason Zucker and Blake Coleman respectively. Tatar is better numbers than both those guys, so there is no reason why he couldn't bring a return comparable, especially since Valimaki wasn't even ranked in the top 100 prospects. Just my take.</div></div>

A couple things. I wouldn't consider Valimaki to be a prospect anymore. He has already impressed at the NHL level, and if he hadn't gotten injured before the season started, he would be playing top-4 minutes right now (maybe even top 2 with the Giordano injury). He is on an entirely different level than Addison and Foote (that's probably why Valimaki was not in the list of top 100 prospects - he has already graduated).

And yes, while you do bring up a good point about the Zucker and Coleman trades, but just because other GMs overpaid to get win-now players doesn't mean that Treliving will. He has already made it very clear that Valimaki is not being moved for even a top RW, so he will certainly not be moved for an older left-shot UFA.

Honestly - and I mean this in with all sincerity - Valimaki is a non-starter. Not even Kotkaniemi would get Calgary to trade Valimaki.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Yes Backlund should be playing 3C, that was the entire purpose of going after Kadri in the off season. Its not necessarily that Monahan is the teams current 1C that is the issue. Its more that a team needs both center depth and balance. By moving Lindholm to 1/2C split with Monahan it gave the team center depth but opened up a massive hole on the right wing. Before Robinson was brought up Calgary was 1 of only 2 teams in the league without a right handed winger in the line up (because Czarnak is in Stockton and both Ryan and Lindy are down the middle). The other being Detroit and they aren't exactly having a hot year.

More or less the point I'm making is a team doesn't need an elite status center to succeed (17-18 Vegas, 18-19 Sharks, Carolina, Nashville, Arizona, Columbus, Philly, Tampa, NYI). Last year the Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm line was one of the most successful in the NHL, right up next to Colorado's and Boston's in terms of production and chemistry. However the teams secondary scoring was certainly an issue and it clearly showed when the first line struggled at the beginning of this year. Backlund taught Tkachuk how to play a good 2-way game but Chucky still had to solo carry that line all season offensively.

Over the next 3 weeks Treliving has a couple options; he can look for a new right handed replacement for the Monahan line, or he can bank on bringing in a 2C (ideally right handed) like JGP to play with Tkachuk and Mango and put Lindholm back on the RW

If the team can move forward with a line up as follows and get its synergy working again the team should succeed
Gaudreau - Monahan - New RHW/Lindholm
Tkachuk - New 2C/Lindholm -Mangiapane
Dube - Backlund - Bennett (unless traded for above piece)
Lucic - Ryan - Rieder</div></div>

You make some really good points, and I generally agree with you.

My only thing is that I think the team needs somebody else to play with Gaudreau besides Monahan. Those two were first paired together when the team was in rebuild stage, and it just made sense to play them together, largely because they were the two young guns on the team with lots of potential. And they have been a good pairing over the years. But things have changed. If we really want to see Gaudreau living up to his full potential, without him disappearing come playoff time, then I think he needs a more dynamic centre who can drive play a bit more (i.e. Dubois, Point, Drouin, etc.). Put Monahan on the second line, and just let him be Mr. steady, while Gaudreau wheels around on the first.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsRafiki</b></div><div>Thanks!! I like this answer, but I want to tease it out a bit with you. First, I really like Bennett, but he is underused in Calgary (not undervalued) and is a depreciating asset. The Flames had no first rounder last year, so the chance to move up in the draft would be meaningful, I suspect, based on what I've read about the "depth" of the top 15 in this year's prospects. Realistically, on performance, Bennett is worth a second rounder, so the swap of first and a third would be a decent payoff.

Second, a question, if Valimaki is untouchable (which I get), would Kylington be available? I would think that might work, too. Unless Hanifin has run afoul of fans, he's still the best horse in the Flames stable. Giordano, though old on paper, is showing no signs of slowing down and is under contract for the next 3 years. So really there's only room for one rookie on the left side, so without a move, you'll eventually lose one to waivers or expansion. On the right, there's Rasmus Andersson but with Hamilton and Fox gone, there' no one else in the pipeline. Brook is a good Western boy who would fit the Calgary style perfectly.

As for Mark Stone, there was never any talk of him staying in Canada after this summer, so he would have been a rental. I wouldn't trade Valimaki for a rental. That's what picks are for.</div></div>

You raise some good points. Bennett is (unfortunately) underused in Calgary. I actually think that he should be playing on the first line with Gaudreau, but that's just me. He has a good shot, he has decent speed, he plays feisty, he does good work along the boards, and he is one of the only players who has actually shown up for the team so far these playoffs. Having said this, as it stands now, you're right: To the rest of the league, Bennett is probably worth around a 2nd round pick, so the draft picks included in your suggestion are about fair value. Personally, I would just rather see the team build around Bennett than trade him away for a chance to move up in the draft. He is worth more to me on the team than the chance to pick at #15 would be.

From the Flames' perspective, if I were wanting to trade a player, I would be looking a little bit more closely at moving Backlund. He's a good player, he has excellent underlying numbers, and he generally plays great defensively, but I think the team has other similar and more cost effective options at the position in Jankowski, Ryan, Dubé and even Lindholm. In other words, Backlund is a player who's trade return might be more useful to the Calgary.

You're also correct about Calgary's organizational depth at defense. Because of this, I think that Kylington is in fact a trade candidate. So, considering all this together, maybe I could see something like Backlund and Kylington for Drouin (I understand that Calgary might have to add, but this would be a rough framework).
