Montreal Canadiens signed Alex Newhook (4 Years / $2,900,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheBoyDuddus</b></div><div>If he’s the player a lot of people think that he is then he’s going to be in for a massive pay raise right when Montreal should be competing for the playoffs.
In a bubble the deal is fine but doesn’t do them any favours down the road.</div></div>
This deal sees them through the end of all their current potentially burdensome contracts (Price, Gallagher, Anderson). Newhook would have been unlikely to extend beyond this without the price going noticeably higher, anyway.

Even as a bridge, I’m kind of amazed he took an AAV that low.

Fair deal with no real risk and a good bit of upside.
Hughes runs his negotiations well.

San Jose Sharks signed Filip Zadina (1 Year / $1,100,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>
What I don't understand is how he got here. CapFriendly says his contract was terminated by Detroit. Obviously that made him a UFA, but how can a team terminate a guy's contract without buying him out? The last time I remember a team terminating a contract was when Evander Kane faked a covid test or something like that, which I assume violated something in the contract terms which allowed the team to walk away from it. Does anybody know under what conditions a team can terminate a player's contract? What did Zadina do to get his contract terminated without Detroit having to buy out the remaining two years? (I know it was past the buyout window, but I thought that meant they were stuck with him until the next buyout window if nobody else wanted to take on his contract.)</div></div>
A player and team can mutually agree to terminate their contract at any time. In this case, Zadina didn't want to play in the AHL, so he asked to terminate, and the Red Wings assented.

Montreal Canadiens signed David Reinbacher (3 Years / $2,116,667 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Not_Isles5513</b></div><div>My issue with the signing is that they didn’t take Michov. It just seems like Hughes and Gorton has done everything they can to minimize the impact of their top picks. After all, the five guys taken immediately after Slafkovsky are all better than the former #1 overall pick. Then you have the Dach and Newhook trades where Montreal overpaid for non-premium talents. Franchise looks like a mess rn imo.</div></div>
Who turns out to be the best of the high picks in the 2022 draft remains to be seen. They aimed for the BPA.
In what world did they overpay for Dach? Pretty much everyone loves the Dach acquisition, which effectively cost them one of their many left D prospects or the chance to pick 13OA in a relatively weak draft year; the chances that Nazar or whoever else they could have picked at that rank turn out to be not as good as Dach are high.

I don’t think Suzuki needs another center, per se; the third guy on that line needs to have transition speed and be good at board battles, qualities that Dach had.
I think it’s unlikely they put two small players on the top line, so HP likely goes elsewhere.

Delighted to see him get the money. I really liked him in Montreal, but we really didn't have room to give him a contract like this. He's been slogging in the pro trenches for a decade now, this is a very meaningful little payday for Belzile.

Fingers crossed things work out for him. I was always rooting for him, even aside from the obvious reality that he was on our team, because there's a contingent of anti-Drouin fans who represent the absolute worst aspects of hockey fandom.
When he could play for us, he was generally a good player; during the absolute dog days of late 2021, he was arguably the best forward on the team. But he may be the unluckiest player I have ever watched, any time things were starting to get going, he'd suddenly be out of the lineup again.

Fair deal. Edmundson's play has been hindered by back problems since the Cup Final run, but at 50% retained he doesn't take up much space on the Capitals roster and presumably will play lesser minutes; and Montreal absolutely needed to move him for the roster spot more than anything.

If you're evaluating this transaction purely as an exchange of pieces, what Pittsburgh got is obviously the more valuable of the two.
But some pieces had to leave Vegas for the cap to work, so in this case, the space they made has value too. We'll see what they use it for.

(WPG/LAK) - Dubois for Iafallo, Kupari, Vilardi, 2024 2nd (MTL)
Centres can obviously play wing and all that, but what exactly is the long-term development plan for Byfield at this point?
Anyway, good trade for Winnipeg given their circumstances.
If Dubois plays to his potential this could be good for the Kings as well; and we'll finally put to the test the question of whether he is a guy with a bad attitude or a guy who was just constantly ending up on teams it was reasonable to want out of.

(COL/MTL) - Newhook for Fairbrother, 2023 1st (FLA), 2023 2nd (MTL)
I’m kind of surprised we’re trading for a 5’10 centre given all the reports about the front office wanting to add more size. Whatever the case, we’ll see how it plays out. The front office’s pro scouting has been good thus far.
Makes the draft a bit less interesting from our perspective, though, now we only have one high pick instead of three.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>The team that wins biggest out of this trade is Winnipeg, because now Montreal is out of the PLD sweepstakes and the Jets have the leverage.</div></div>
Huh? How does it help Winnipeg if they no longer have another major team bidding against the Kings?
Not that it matters, since it sounds like the deal is mostly done.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>IMO, a fair deal for Newhook would be Fairbrother + one of the two picks, not both. </div></div>
Fairbrother, with his injury history, isn’t really a noteworthy prospect at this point. He’s closer to a throw-in.

(ARI/LAK) - 2024 2nd (MTL) for Durzi
Interesting to see Arizona now in buying mode.
From LA's perspective this is likely also an exercise in clearing cap space for future transactions, so it can't purely be assessed as an exchange, but I would say the Coyotes got the greater value from this deal.

That Weegar contract is easily tradeable. There are plenty of teams that would offer a deal like that in free agency right now, especially given how weak this UFA class is.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>If you've played organized hockey (not meant to be an insult, just more of a scenario that you could understand where I'm coming from), and you had the option to sign with 2 teams: one team will use you to try and win for sure, that's why they are approaching you and one team may or may not use you or might send you off to another team... Which team would you rather sign with?</div></div>
When Montreal is actively recruiting free agents for more traditional long-term contracts in a few years, I'm not sure why anybody would be concerned that a few years earlier the team gave a guy they took in as a cap dump an extra year to try a mutually beneficial arrangement. The team isn't trying to win now. In the future, they will be; nobody signs guys to long-term contracts just to trade them immediately.

Monahan wants to be traded at the deadline. I'm not sure why you think other free agents would have a problem with a contractual arrangement that very much suits both player and team.
