also i may be in the minority here, but the JT Miller trade is not worth it. i don't think the Pens can afford his extension next season (~$8M) and it doesn't make sense to spend that much capital on a 1-year rental</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensfan89</b></div><div>Dump ERod and bring in Sonny Milano.</div></div>
Had Milano in there, but wasn't sure if he would fit alongside Zucker and Carter. Don't mind the idea of a new 3C, but Strome is probably out of the price range. And as for the Miller deal, the pens would have Zucker and Dumo coming off the books to make room for his extension and to resign Jarry as your two main priorities in the next offseason.

Yes Malkin will be missed on the powerplay, but even strength he is quite often a liability, especially defensively. That second line would work 1000 times harder than a 36 year old Malkin ever has in the last 3 years. This just seems like a team that would be more likely to win a playoff series than one with Malkin on it.

The majority have him in the 10-17 range and that’s where I think he goes. But if he is available at 18 or 19 I would have no problem trading up.
A candidate for someone who could drop would be Lambert or Mateychuk. Lamberts poor season and potential lack of compete level, along with mateychuks lack of size, have caused them to drop out of favour from some scouts</div></div>
Just tough to know who's still gonna be there until you get to that point in the draft. I just think the pens really need to start either collecting up the middle or on defense.

But the thing is they don't need him. He provides them nothing - they couldn't care less about getting a middle six winger for one year where they aren't going to be good. But getting rid of him is incredibly important to the Pens. Every team knows that. That's why you have to pay the premium.</div></div>
What would be considered a premium then? If I have to give up a second or more, I'm just gonna keep him and not sign Mikheyev or Rutta. Let Ruwhedel play again and look for a better replacement with the money you get when Zucker's contract comes of the books at the end of the year.

I'm just basing it off of Button's prospect ranking that those guys are ranked around 21. I agree that they probably won't drop, but Geekie (29) and McGroarty (25) are both ranked in the bottom 3rd of the draft. Just depends which ranking you think is the right one. Pens Year 1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>It was a shortened season two years ago too though don't forget. If you extrapolate that over an 82 game season it's the equivalent of playing 55 games. Is that really above average for a 2nd line winger? So that means the average 2nd line winger is scoring like 30-35 points? Seems low for a top 6 forward but I don't have anything to back that up.
I think he's still a solid winger when healthy and I like the way he plays. But you have to see this from the Ducks POV - why would they take on a middle line winger with injury problems for one year(they know they aren't going to resign him) and get a worse pick? It doesn't make any sense. What is in it for them? It's just a straight gift for the Pens. And Zucker has a NTC so there aren't really a lot of options unless he's super nice and doesn't put any teams on his list. Either way, no matter what team you trade him for you're going to have to give up a pick or a prospect or both. It doesn't affect your final roster, we're just saying you need to give up more to get rid of him.</div></div>

https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2011/9/27/2452941/common-misconceptions-how-much-should-that-forward-score
These are from a few years back and goal scoring has gone up a bit since these were done, but would still put him in the average to above average category. It really wouldn't be a huge deal just giving up a 4th or 5th to move him, I just thought someone would be willing to give up a mid to late round pick to add a fairly good player.

I'm not saying he's worth the 5.5 he's payed, I'm just saying I don't think he has negative value. He's scored at an above average second line winger pace his entire career until last years injuries. If Anaheim doesn't want him, maybe a team like Arizona, Detroit or Seattle would give a 5th or something to add a 20 goals to their team. I could also retain like 2.5 million on his deal and just not sign Mikheyev and have a young guy take his spot on the 3rd line.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>First off it was 2 seasons of injuries.
And because when the Pens traded for him he was a wanted player(not a cap dump) who was extremely healthy and was playing at a 27G, 55p pace.
In two plus seasons with the pens he has constantly been injured and is scoring at a 20g, 41 point pace. And most importantly, it's a cap dump. Everybody knows it - so you actually have to incentivize the other team to take him. Why would the Ducks do the Pens a favor for no reason? A guy they don't want and won't keep and they get a worse pick? It makes no sense.</div></div>
He only missed like 15 games the year before, which is not great I guess, but not half a season like this year. A 20 goal 40 point pace is above average for a second line winger. I get that it is a cap dump, but he still has value as a player so there would potentially be more than 1 team who would take him. It's not like the Ducks are the only option.

He was just a bonus signing if you could afford him for the year until a guy like Poulin, O'Connor or Puustinen are ready to fill a spot. Money in 2024 needs to be saved if you are going to resign Miller, unless you can find a way to offload Carter so I only signed him for the 1 year. Could maybe bring him back if you could find a cheaper 3rd pair LHD too.

No point in giving top 6 ice time to an injury prone 30 year old in the middle of a rebuild</div></div>
First, Comtois, Steel and Jones were all on pace for less than 30 points last year, so I'm not sure what makes you think they are top six players and McTavish has 9 games of NHL experience. Secondly, somebody would be willing to move down a couple rounds for a 40 point player on there roster, it doesn't have to be the Ducks, they just seemed like a good fit. Outside of last season Zucker has never missed more than 20 games in a year and the Ducks also need to add some money next year just to get to the cap floor, especially if they end up deciding to move Gibson. Why not add a great mentor for the young players that still has the ability to produce for next to nothing when you already have 9 draft picks every year for the next 3 years anyway? If the Ducks won't do it, there is bound to be a team that see's at least a little value in that.

Miller is a 99 point player that plays all situations and you get him at 2650000. Plus he'll probably re-sign too since he's from the Pittsburgh area</div></div>
I would do this as a Pens fan as long as Miller came with an extension for sure. The Pens aren't trying to move Marino, there has just been interest in the player from a few teams around the league. But if moving him got a player like Miller past this next season, you can't really turn that down, even if it does cost you your first next year. I think Kapanen does have some value, just hasn't really fit in Pitt. He has the tools to be a good player, just hasn't been able to put it together. Maybe throw in a mid to late round pick coming back to even it out?

Carter put up decent numbers last year but he faded towards the end. That’s because he played PK, PP, and 3C. He can’t have al of these roles. Let Erod play centre, he has young legs and it is his natural position.
I wonder if pettersson being traded makes it less likely for Rakell to come back. They seem very close</div></div>
I honestly wouldn't be upset if they let Dumo walk unless they can sign him for like 3-3.5 mil a year. Just didn't have a great season, and you can find younger and better replacements in guys like Ryan Graves or Carson Soucy for a similar price. There does look to be room to bring him back though if it were to play out like this.
I totally agree that Carter shouldn't be a 3C anymore, but he's good on draws so maybe have him take the faceoff then have Rodrigues play the position. I'm actually disappointed they resigned him at all , especially for that much money, but too late now. I would also like to see the pens put a few of there skill players on the pk like Boston, just so they are more of a threat shorthanded, plus those are usually your smartest players which make for the best penalty killers.
Not sure about the whole Pettersson thing, but I think the fact that he got to play with Sid and for a team that emphasizes skill, speed, and scoring is something that would keep him interested in staying since Anaheim never really played that way.

It could be made a second probably, Zucker has also been a 20 goal scorer or on a 20 goal, 40+ point pace in 6 of the last 7 seasons so he's still a productive player that would likely be in Anaheim's top 6. Just had one season filled with injuries that held him back. It's only one year on the deal anyway so they don't have to deal with the slightly overpriced contract after this season. Anaheim also needs to get to the cap floor this season and has been considering moving another 6+ million in Gibson.

If the pens knew they could bring Miller back after next season, it would be more of an option. But for what is currently just a one year rental, this isn't a bad return. I think the return you are after is coming from a team with the knowledge he wants to stay and the ability to sign him long term which is just not the Pens at this point.
