Description
I think if Vancouver wants Marino so bad, and a player like Miller is available, you have to make that happen. Makes this a very dangerous and deep team. I think that is a pretty fair deal with the caveat that miller comes with an extension. I've seen 5x8.5 a few places. I think that is relatively fair value for him with retention.

The Pettersson trade has been everywhere. Pens need the relief, and Detroit gets a solid top 4 guy for pretty much nothing.

If Carolina can't resign Bear, I think he would be great to replace what you are losing in Marino, only issue is if the Canes would be willing to deal with the Pens. Not sure if that's fair value, but I think it's close considering the offer sheet draft compensation is only a second rounder for that type of deal.

The Zucker deal seems okay to me. Zucker will play top six in Anaheim and probably score 40-50 points if he stays healthy and is only on the ducks books for 1 season. And all he would cost is a moving down from a 3rd to a 5th.

I would really like to see Flower come back for 1 more year and finish his career as a Pen. Takes a bit of a discount and provides a reliable backup to Jars that the Pens have missed the last 2 years.

POJ, Nylander, and O'Connor need to at least be given a shot to play as Pens need some youth and energy inserted into their lineup. The Mikheyev signing is more of a bonus if you have the room kind of thing. His money can be given to people mentioned above if needed and a young guy or min contract guy can be signed and play on the 4th line and give Nylander or someone a shot on the 3rd line.

Check out Part 2 as well and let me know what you think.

Detroit accepts, if you drop the 7th.

That 7th means basically nothing to Detroit. To get a top 4 d-man they would probably let it slide

These are from a few years back and goal scoring has gone up a bit since these were done, but would still put him in the average to above average category. It really wouldn't be a huge deal just giving up a 4th or 5th to move him, I just thought someone would be willing to give up a mid to late round pick to add a fairly good player.

Fair enough - that seems about right after looking into it.

But the thing is they don't need him. He provides them nothing - they couldn't care less about getting a middle six winger for one year where they aren't going to be good. But getting rid of him is incredibly important to the Pens. Every team knows that. That's why you have to pay the premium.

I'm just basing it off of Button's prospect ranking that those guys are ranked around 21. I agree that they probably won't drop, but Geekie (29) and McGroarty (25) are both ranked in the bottom 3rd of the draft. Just depends which ranking you think is the right one. I assume Teemu is supposed to be Geekie here?

Yes teemu was supposed to be Geekie. I was typing that while walking up the stairs, post leg day.

Here are some ranking for Conor “teemu” Geekie:

Ranked #15 by CONSOLIDATED RANKING
Ranked #17 by ELITEPROSPECTS.COM
Ranked #14 by FCHOCKEY
Ranked #10 by TSN/BOB McKENZIE
Ranked #14 by MCKEEN'S HOCKEY
Ranked #31 by TSN/CRAIG BUTTON
Ranked #5 by NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING (NA Skaters)
Ranked #11 by SPORTSNET
Ranked #14 by ISS HOCKEY
Ranked #14 by RECRUIT SCOUTING
Ranked #31 by DOBBERPROSPECTS
Ranked #13 by DRAFT PROSPECTS HOCKEY
Ranked #30 by SMAHT SCOUTING
Ranked #13 by THE PUCK AUTHORITY

The majority have him in the 10-17 range and that’s where I think he goes. But if he is available at 18 or 19 I would have no problem trading up.

A candidate for someone who could drop would be Lambert or Mateychuk. Lamberts poor season and potential lack of compete level, along with mateychuks lack of size, have caused them to drop out of favour from some scouts

What would be considered a premium then? If I have to give up a second or more, I'm just gonna keep him and not sign Mikheyev or Rutta. Let Ruwhedel play again and look for a better replacement with the money you get when Zucker's contract comes of the books at the end of the year.

Just tough to know who's still gonna be there until you get to that point in the draft. I just think the pens really need to start either collecting up the middle or on defense.

Like I said originally, probably just have to switch the picks. Maybe add in another low/mid prospect who needs a change of scenery. If it's a 2nd I would absolutely say no as well. I like the way Zucker plays if healthy I think he could be a fantastic 3rd line winger - fill in on 2nd in a pinch if someone gets hurt. And then, as you said, his contract comes off the books next year and you can use it to resign Miller and Jarry. It was just the fact you had ANA taking on his contract and giving up a better pick that I had the issue with. It's like a double negative

We are in agreement. We are good for wingers and goalies, we need some dmen and centres.

It does make sense as long as ANA is getting a good pick and maybe a prospect out of it.

The reason it isn't a good fit is ANA already has a Zucker-type player in Silfverberg and a rebuilding team isn't going to clog up the middle six with guys in their 30's. Same money, one extra year of term on Silvy. Both fought injuries hard the past two seasons. Silvy has played more game and scored more points in his career but Zucker has the slight edge in points per game.

I don't know how much Verbeek values the leadership, veteran intangibles of Silfverberg but I value them quite highly. Especially his mentoring impact on Lundestrom. That said, I can see a world where Verbeek views him as Bob Murray player that he doesn't want to keep. A buyout isn't out of the question and if so that would clear the way for bringing in Zucker *if* the sweatener was adequate. It would signal that Verbeek sees the Ducks as earlier in the rebuild than others might think. Being willing to eat dead money rather than spending the same money on quality roster players is quite telling in that regard.
