He was acquired for a fourth. He's easily worth more than that now.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>1 - Well, that is all just simply not accurate. Some of it is <em>wildly </em>off. I'll leave it at that.
2 - I really think you are underplaying how impactful this can be. Especially to a new GM regime walking in the door.
3 - I'm not talking about fan chatter. I'm talking about media chatter.
4 - CLB gave up the draft slot where Bonk went (which was pure idiocy... loads of other excellent prospects were also still available) and what will presumably be a high 25 2nd to get Provy retained like that. Oh, you definitely are paying for part of his salary. Paying more than it is worth, actually.
5 - To who? When?
6 - Oh my... please do not hold your breath over getting a 1st for Provy. That would be harmful to your health.
It's one thing to think he's been okay as a 2LD for his AAV. But c'mon. Be real.</div></div>
He's not popular, not with fans or teammates. We agree on that. But hockey ops people don't care that he "hates the gays." Most of them do, too, probably without even the veneer of blaming Orthodox Christianity like Provorov did. They're just smart enough not to make statements. Macho hockey he-man culture? Come on. Have you met a hockey player?
CBJ made moves requested by Babcock. He wanted two veteran D, possibly even Provorov and Severson specifically. But even without Babcock in the mix, Columbus 100% had to make at least one blueline move last offseason for an established player. They couldn't risk another year of finding themselves needing to use Billy Sweezy in the NHL. They moved a first acquired in a previous trade for two UFA's whose time in Columbus was over. It was house money. It was worth the opportunity cost of a player who won't see the NHL til 2025 at the earliest to bring in help now to a blueline that was utterly devastated and devoid of any talent. Obviously I wish it hadn't been Provorov (ffs, I AM LGBT MYSELF AND I AM SO TIRED OF HAVING TO TALK ABOUT HIM), but trading that late first for a mid-20s defenseman with pedigree was absolutely the right choice. I don't care if fans of a team that made the playoffs think otherwise. <em>You didn't have to watch the Blue Jackets defense in 2022-23</em>. Idiocy would have been doing nothing and going into a new season with the same collection of AHLers, injury risks, and children on ELCs they ended the year with.
They had to do something, and they had capital to do so that didn't affect their own picks in that draft at all. Provorov is a former top 10 pick who's still an actual NHL caliber player; you yourself even acknowledged he's a fine for the second pair. The Flyers signed him to his current deal in 2019, before the pandemic and when he was, in fact, very much a first pairing defenseman. 6.75 for that is fantastic. He's currently retained down to 4.725, thanks to Rob Blake's foolishness, and it is very easy for Columbus to retain up to half of that for a year.
So yes, someone will pay a first for a second pair caliber rental defenseman at (likely) under four million dollars. Like I said, maybe not this coming Friday. But over the summer or next deadline? Yes, someone will. And it won't be St. Louis, so I'm not sure why you care so much. You've got the corpses of Torey Krug and Nick Leddy for much, much longer to worry about. Provorov is just here to keep Denton Mateychuk's roster spot warm.

None of the CBJ guys are really available, per se. I could see Provorov or Tex going if a big-enough package is offered; but, Kuraly is the local guy and a great B6 C. Guds is probably overpaid, but he's a great locker-room guy and is <a href="https://www.1stohiobattery.com/columbus-blue-jackets-analysis/2024/02/8591/blue-jackets-defenseman-erik-gudbranson-bouncing-back-on-defense-in-2023-24" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">kind of bouncing back.</a> Danforth just signed his extension, so I dont see him going anywhere.

Nope as long as they don't send him to the minors he doesn't have to be offered back. The purpose is to prevent a team from claiming and burying a player.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>You act as though you're competing for the playoffs, when you're at the very bottom of the league and should be looking to tank for a draft with some high end pieces at the top. Merzlikins does not fit your timeline as a starter, with Tarasov being your goalie of the future. You'd be selling high on him before he too becomes a negative asset, and would be taking advantage of your abundance of cap space for the next couple of years to gain valuable assets. You'd even be saving some money against the cap. The value is debatable, but i certainly think this is a great package. The reasons for CBJ making a trade like this should not be debatable at all.</div></div>
I don't think we are as far off it as you do. If they could figure out how to close a game AT FRICKING ALL (I'm not upset about that fact....can't you tell) They would be right in the race this year. Add another year of growth and maybe our stars SHOWING THE FORK UP (again not upset......) we should be in or bubble next year.

All-in
The equivalent of all chips on the table! Honestly I think it's ok value-wise, at first glance. But yeah, the hangups are:
1. Trades this size with this many moving parts and that much retained salary just don't happen.
2. Columbus really <em>really</em> doesn't want to move Jenner.
3. This locks up all 3 of our retention slots for 2+ seasons, so there's a lot less flexibility.
That would easily be the best center core in the league, and that's one hell of a lineup. My second-favorite team would have to become whoever is playing the Oilers on any given night for the next 3 years.

What he said but I'll expain a bit more. Columbus is looking to be back in the hunt next year and this trade set's them back at least 2. You're asking for our #1 goalie, a guy whos currently playing on the top pair AND a previous first round pick who is starting to figure it our for a guy who isn't lighting up the AHL, a journymen depth player, a mid upper prospect and magic beans two and three years from now. Columbus declines.

What is that move
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CBJ_Bob</b></div><div>The Jackets don't have a history of taking on cap dumps and buying them out.
That is the other reason a Campbell/Elvis swap makes no sense.</div></div>
Fair, guess they would have to be confident enough that Tarasov could be the 1A and have hope they could help Campbell turn it around, but yeah sounds like there is little sense for CLB to do this. Even the futures, aren't significant considering the prospect pool that they have. At best it's a way to move an RD lol.
Trading Campbell to MTL for one of their goalies is probably still the move, and then they can get Boqvist for their defense.
