Draft picks and prospects aren't going to make a difference in the near-term and EDM needs to win now. Having Laine and Jenner locked up for 3 years on insanely reasonable deals gives much needed depth. Jenner seems like he would be a good playoff guy too. Merzlikins probably isn't the savior in net, but he's been decent on a terrible team and at $2.7M for the next 3 years is reasonable.

Gives EDM about $12M in cap space next offseason with only a couple spots to fill - compared to $14M before the trade with a couple more holes.

That's literally everything EDM can offer - lol. But yea, agreed - CBJ would never go for it just for the terrible publicity not to mention the real dollars.

The equivalent of all chips on the table! Honestly I think it's ok value-wise, at first glance. But yeah, the hangups are:

1. Trades this size with this many moving parts and that much retained salary just don't happen.
2. Columbus really really doesn't want to move Jenner.
3. This locks up all 3 of our retention slots for 2+ seasons, so there's a lot less flexibility.

That would easily be the best center core in the league, and that's one hell of a lineup. My second-favorite team would have to become whoever is playing the Oilers on any given night for the next 3 years.

If you take out Jenner the Jackets may actually consider this.
