I'm a wings fan. I just want to get something for him while he still has value. He had plenty of opportunities to become a top 6 forward, but he kept squandering his chances. Bertuzzi surpassing him in the depth chart was the final nail in the coffin.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ClockReads2113</b></div><div>Why would DET make that trade with PIT? What are they getting in return? An unproven goalie, an overpaid 3rd liner, and a 2nd? AA is a legit young talent. DET needs young guys to build around.</div></div>
AA is not that good (see my previous comment) and is clearly not part of the wings future. The Wings are getting a 2nd, a cap dump that can be moved at the deadline (Hagelin is a serious playoff performer so he'll fetch a 2nd or so), and a goalie who excelled in college and posted a .920 last season on a cheap contract for an inconsistent 3rd line winger who can't break 40 pts or 20 goals while being a major defensive liability and used in a sheltered role.

He's honestly not that great. He's freakishly fast, good at forcing turnovers, creative, and has a good shot. He's a huge defensive liability that's not worth his offensive production, doesn't always show up to games, only effective in a limited role, and struggles to play center. He's worth about a 2nd and 3rd round pick (Kyle Palmieri trade for comparison). He doesn't really fit in with Detroit's plans and I'd rather get something for him.

It's a cap dump for Toronto since they have some important RFA's to sign in the next few years. XO's contract expires next year, so they can just let him walk. I liked Martin when he was in New York. He'll most likely be in the lineup when we play physical teams or if one of the young players isn't playing well. Like if we're playing Boston he would be very helpful. So Witkowski but with more offense.

Likely a more rounded defenseman like Hughes or Bouchard will be a better fit, although Blashill and Holland do love their Swedes. As well as Merkley's gotta be going to a lottery team. He does have some attitude problems but his skill alone is phenomenal, and he's been improving his game all season long. 67 points in 63 games on a very sub par junior team is unreal.</div></div>
We have to run out our bad contracts, so we can wait a few years.

I hope we don't draft Hughes. He looks like a 4th forward instead of a steady dman and I don't think he'll be able to pull of his moves in the NHL. He looks prone to defensive lapses. Reminds me a lot of Ghost. Boqvist and Dobson are the 2 guys I hope we target. Seriously look up how much better the Titans are doing with Dobson finding his stride. I like Bouchard. He's better than those 2 now, but I think Dobson and Boqvist will be better than him in 5 years.

2018
No way Dobson falls out of the top 10. It's ridiculous how underrated he is. His rookie season he had 26 points with the Titans being 3rd in their division and losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs while allowing 242 goals against in the regular season. This season he has 69 points his team was first in the Maritime, they're playing in the president's cup final and swept the teams they played in the 2nd and 3rd round while allowing 183 goals against in the regular season (The first time the titans allowed less than 240 goals against since 2011). He's a big, calm, fast RHD who can play in all 3 zones, can carry the puck and make a first pass. Fans overlook him because he doesn't have the numbers and flash that Hughes, Boqvist, and Bouchard have, but he's better defensively than all 3 and a better skater than Bouchard. The only knocks on him are that he plays in the QMJHL, he's really skinny, and isn't physical (which he admits to and is actively trying to improve on). From watching his highlights he reminds me a lot of Seth Jones. Plays a simple defensive game and can more than contribute to the offense. He's just hitting his stride and he's going to be phenomenal after his development. Hughes and Bouchard are more developed than him and closer to being NHL ready. Boqvist has so much potential, but he's also a work in progress too. I don't see teams taking Smith, McIssac, and especially Merkely (who's projected to fall out of the 1st round over his attitude). Detroit has a history of going off script in the draft (Cholowski over Chychrun and Rasmussen over Liljegren and Vilardi) for guys they want, but analysts and fans didn't expect. I think Vancouver is targeting defense, but with the Sedins retiring I could see them going for Wahlstrom. So he'll likely be picked in the 6-10 range.

Red Wings Reasonable Offseason - Armchair GM series
Machovsky is going back to Czechia. Larkin deal is perfect. Mantha is getting a 2 year bridge deal worth 2.5-3 million. AA is on the trading block and is nowhere near getting that contact. Frk is overpaid for too long. Bertuzzi is on our top line and is part of our future more so than Frk and AA, he'll probably get something like 2×1.5 million. Red Wings don't need Sanford and Ritchie in the line up when Svechnikov and Rasmussen are almost certain to be on the team next year and have more potential than both. Nielsen is not going to be moved. He has a NMC, he's our best shootout guy, and he's huge for us on the pk and in our own zone. Nielsen is also a stop gap for when Zetterberg retires and Rasmussen figures out how to be an nhl center. Ouellet asked for a trade and he's as good as gone. There are rumours going around that Mike Green might re-sign. No way in hell Mrazeks is signed. He's had way too many chances here and we know what he's capable of. Red wings either sign an older cheap backup like Johnson or Hammond or trade for a young back up with promise like Subban or Grubauer. Hicketts and Hronek are going to be in the lineup instead of XO or McIlrath. Sorry about my rant. I like what you're doing and I'll probably do this soon so you can nitpick my teams. I know it's difficult to know what teams you don't follow want.

I say this as a Wings fan, you overpaid for Nyquist. He has one year left and if you look at the Grabner and Marcus Johansson trades, he's worth about a 2nd and a 3rd/prospect. Also wings are trying to free up roster spots for the younger players. Hintz and a 2nd should do the trick. Also Nyquist is very dependent on his line mates. He needs to be with somebody who is an excellent passer (like Zetterberg or Vanek) and a speedy grinder (Bertuzzi or Helm), other wise he disappears. I could see him playing well with Spezza. Vegas isn't going to be moving picks especially for Spezza (they gave up a lot for Tatar). I also wouldn't give up on Spezza, it might be that he just didn't play well for Hitchcock. Just look at how Eric Staal played for Bill Peter's compared to Bruce Boudreau.

Love what you're doing with the challenge. You low balled Grubauer big time. He had similar numbers to Cam Talbot when he was a Ranger and he went for two second round picks. A good deal of teams are going to be looking for a solid 1b goalie or a new starter (NYI, Detroit, Chicago, Carolina, Ottawa, Dallas) so there's competition too.

Why does every red wing fan on CF want to trade Glendening (especially to a big rival)? He's one of the best 4th line centers/ pk specialists in the NHL on a very affordable cap hit of 1.8million. Plus he's a great pr story and gets under Crosby's skin. Nyquist as a rental is worth a 2nd and a 3rd pick.

I too think JT will end up a shark. I wouldn't sign Kane though, cap crunch and you lose your 1st round pick if you sign him. The NYI trade makes no sense, I think you have to give them a 3rd to take him. Would a Jonathan Ericsson (Detroit) with rs for Paul Martin and a 4th work?

Mantha is going to get 2 or 3 years at around 2.5 million (That's comparable to Jaden Schwartz' and Tatar's bridge contract). He hasn't proved that he deserves that long term contract with the big bucks. Read the heart to heart article between Blashill and Mantha. It's not just me and lampshadey20 who think that.

Come tell me how stupid my trades/signings are!!!
Grubauer is worth around two 2nd round picks (see Cam Talbot trade). 4.5 million is what he would be paid if he took over as our starting goalie (see Raanta and Talbot signings), but since he is an rfa he would most likely get something like 2.5 million for a year or two. For the love of God, don't trade Glenny for only a 3rd round pick to a divisional rival. As far as 4th line center PK specialists go he's one of the best in the league (up there with clutterbuck and beagle). Plus 1.8 million isn't that much. If Babcock really wants him that bad then we'll have to absolutely rob Toronto. Mantha is overpaid he should be getting something like 2x2.8 million (Jaden Schwartz and Tatar bridge deals for comparison). I'm one of the few red wings fans who likes DDK so I wouldn't trade him, but if your committed to trading him I don't think CBJ would want him. CBJ will most likely sign Ian Cole, similar player without having to give up picks. Anaheim could want him or Ericsson since Bieksa and Beauchemein are coming off their contracts. Maybe even SJS if we're willing to take Paul Martin off their hands. CBJ has an atrocious PP and need scoring help so I'm sure they would love to have Nyquist on the team. Nyquist had great chemistry with Vanek. Other signings and XO trade make sense. Cholo will be in the AHL next year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>nashless</b></div><div>No cap issues? DET has the most "bad cap" in the NHL.</div></div>
DRWs shed 7.5 million at the deadline. Then have about another 8.9 million being shed at the end of the season (Green, Wiess buyout recapture, and rest of Mrazeks RS). Next season Kronwall and Nyquist are playing the last year of their contracts which is about 9 million. Plus about 5 million being added to the salary cap. Detroit has a bunch of rfas without Arbitration rights coming up, but most should be cheap bridge deals (except for Larkin who should be getting a long term contract at around 6-7million per year). AA has arbitration rights, but his contract wont be a back breaker. Detroit has some players who are overpaid, but their cap situation isn't bad. The log jam on defense is a problem. When our next core needs big pay days there will be cap space.

Wings Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>The thing is, I think Islanders, Coyotes and Blues fans are talking about trading a decent forward prospect and a pick for Grubauer. Hurricanes fans have signed off on Orpik for Kruger, which gives the Caps 2.5M of cap space and a struggling Swede who might work well with Backstrom, or who can be moderately effective in a checking role. Does this mean the actual teams would do these things? Who knows. But in this fantasy escape world of CapFriendly, you've already been publicly outbid, maybe not in absolute value, but in marginal value to the Caps.
Your description of Nyquist is fair, and it's also my description of Burakovsky, Vrana, Wilson, Oshie, Connolly, Smith-Pelly, and (to a lesser extent) Chiasson (who had 25 points last year in a third line role and has disappeared on Washington's fourth line this year). Of those guys, Oshie got top line time last year and Wilson has it this year. The rest haven't caught a whiff, so their stats are low and their contracts are low. That allows Washington to field a really deep group of wings. They've got Walker, Gersich and Barber at the almost-ready-for-the-NHL level. And they don't have much cap space. If Nyquist were a two-way center who could counter Brassard, the Caps would throw in a 1st. But I don't think Detroit is looking to trade away any centers, and I don't think many exist who are better than Brassard in the playoffs and aren't already in Pittsburgh.
Orpik is old and slow and expensive, but he contributes something no other Cap brings: four hits per game in the playoffs, average, career, and pretty much every year. Over a seven game series, that can build a lot of momentum. Nyquist is equally expensive, and brings something the Caps have in spades. He might be the best and most established player in the trade, but in Washington he'd be a slight upgrade over Burakovsky, keeping Burakovsky toiling in obscurity in the bottom six. Since Bura is a recent Caps first round pick, and since he got fifteen goals last year and is a healthy scratch a fair amount this year.... I just don't see the Caps wanting an older, more expensive replacement.
The reason the Caps consider trading Grubauer at all is fear of losing him to an expansion team. So ideally they'd trade him to a team with no goalies whose contracts have positive value, and get back future potential.
Trading Orpik for ericsson is tempting becauase Ericsson has good corsi relative to zone starts and a lower cap hit, but it means the Caps give up Orpik's toughness and physical presence in the playoffs, which are pretty well unmatched. Again, they'd consider it in order to re-sign Carlson and have enough cap space.
Trading Grubauer for Nyquist isn't ideal. It probably raises their cap number (although who knows how much Grubauer gets as an RFA this summer) and adds to another position of strength. If you could teach Nyquist to play center or right defense, I'd be all about him.</div></div>
Makes sense. Thanks for the input. I remember Trotz talking about how he wanted more forward depth and speed. I figured with the retained salaries, Washington could save some cap space. Nyquist has 20 goals while playing with Zetterberg, he would probably push 30 goals with Kuzy or Backstrom. I also thought it would actually benefit Bura and Vrana since Nyquist only has a year left on his contract and those two could play a more sheltered role. My original thinking was Nyquist (with RS) could be a cheap short term replacement for MoJo. Nyquist can sort of play center, but better to leave him on the wing. My gut feeling says Blues keep the same goalies and Arizona either keeps Raanta or goes with Keumper (Keumper and Grubauer would be an interesting tandem though). Damn I forgot about NYI, they'll probably go out of their way to get Lehner, Raanta, or Grubauer. Maybe Columbus will bite with Korpisalo, because their powerplay is pretty bad and he would be tied with Atkinson for 2nd in goals on the team.

Wings are actually doing well cap wise, even after signing Larkin long term and our other RFA's on bridge contracts. Wings wouldn't need to buy out Howard. Tatar, Mrazek, and Green took up a lot of space.

I'm not sure the Caps consider this, becuase Nyquist just isn't how they want to spend all the cap space they can get after overpaying to trade away Orpik, but I happen to think Ericsson is decent, and with this trade coming out roughly salary neutral, I think they gamble on Nyquist and see if maybe Backstrom can bring something out of him that Zetterberg couldn't? Doesn't sound like a sure thing, but if you take the pick out it's an even deal.</div></div>
That saves Washington 3 million in cap space. Honestly Nyquist is a nice compliment player to have. He would play very well with Backstrom or Kuznetsov, but he'll disappear if he's on the 3rd line. Would throwing a Detroit 4th round pick work? or switching the 2nd round pick to a 3rd? What prospects did you have in mind?

He's having a good season by his standards. He's still screening our goalies, turning over the puck in our zone, and deflecting the puck into our net. Nyquist has similar stats to Marcus Johansson who got a 2nd and 3rd from New Jersey. Grabner who has better numbers the last 2 seasons than Nyquist didn't get a 1st round pick. So I'd say a 2nd and PG (I can never spell his last name right) is fair for Nyquist.
