EDM CUP RUN
If Broberg is moved, it’ll be in a deal for a starting goalie or a top 4 LHD with term.
20 games from a 2nd pairing rental ain’t it

Yes - fair swap to see if a change of scenery helps both guys
No- Varlamov is not the answer
No - Barrie is a great puck mover… if he’s moved the oilers will miss him. Bouchard needs a lot more time before he’s ready for full time
No - want nothing to do with Savard. Not good and don’t need his contract
Yes - soucy is a perfect fit for the oilers, as long as Keith retires. Neimelinen/Broberg will take the bottom pairing LHD next season

McLeod value
That value is probably pretty fair. But I personally have been a huge McLeod fan for a while now and think the Oilers should hold onto him. He's cheap and has looked way more comfortable since Woodcroft took the bench. I'd like to see him play with a little more grit and physicality, so hopefully that will come soon.
Roslovic has proven more in the league and is the better player now. But McLeod is cheaper and no reason to move him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Timmah007</b></div><div>Gotta say thanks for adding that about Barrie absolutely 100% agree with it and find it a real shame how much abuse he gets on this site. Also respect the fact he turned down bigger money to come here in the first place just to have an incredible season then resign for less than he was offered before coming here. Fans should respect that type of stuff it’s not often it happens for Edmonton.</div></div>
I will defend Barrie to bitter end hahaha.
This franchise was dying for a RHD puck mover for the last decade. Barrie is exactly that and literally lead the league in points by a dman. This season when we lost Larsson, Tipp was playing him 25 mins a night with Nurse… he was without a doubt out of his Element there. The most common criticism from fans is that with the “emergence of Bouchard”, he no longer has value. That is straight up stupid. Is there a rule saying you can’t have more than 1 puck mover on your blue line? What happens when one of them gets hurt? Playing Russell in the top 4 is currently the fix for that haha. It’s even more ridiculous when you saw how poorly Bouchard played defensively when he was given the top Pairing minutes with Nurse. Woodcroft moving Ceci into that top role, while dialling back Barrie and Bouchards minute made a huge improvement. No doubt Ceci isn’t a top pairing dman, but given his simple style of defensive play, he handles those minutes a whole lot better than the other two. And just as you pointed out, he took less money to stay. 3 years at $4.5M is not even close to an overpay for what he brings. Nice to see someone else here who’s got his back haha

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nqutilus</b></div><div>Well, then you're not getting Hagel. He’s not getting a 1st and top prospect like Holloway. Don’t be ridiculous.
I’ve heard that teams have offered a 1st already. Where have you heard a 1st and top prospect? But you need to understand a team like Tampa/Florida offering a 1st is in the 25-32 range.
A 1st from the oilers is in he 15-25 range. Adding a top prospect on top of that is pushing it.
Hagel has played less than 100 games. Do you really think he’s worth a Holloway level prospect more than Toffoli (who is a consistent producer, Stanley cup champ, also on a good deal with term)?
Again, I think Hagel is a great player with a 1st from a cup competing team. Once you start adding A+ prospects it just becomes unrealistic

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nqutilus</b></div><div>Fleury and Hagel together (assuming retention on Fleury) would cost around three 1st round picks worth of assets. Add a second on there considering you'll probably need us to take salary back.
Probably would look something like this:
:blackhawks
Brandon Hagel
Marc-Andre Fleury ($3,500,000 retained)
(Some random minor league player to even-out the contracts)
Oilers 2022 3rd Round Pick (we'd remove the conditions on the Keith trade, as well)
:oilers
Philip Broberg
Dylan Holloway
Kyle Turris
Mikko Koskinen
Oilers 2022 1st Round Pick
Oilers 2023 2nd Round Pick
Oilers 2023 3rd Round Pick</div></div>
Oh boy….
I don’t disagree that Fleury and Hagel would get a 1st rounder each… but both Holloway and Broberg are worth way more than a mid 1st round pick given where they are in their development. Then you add another 1st and a 2nd? This is objectively overvaluing those guys.
Value aside, Fleury doesn’t make any sense for the oilers to target. He’s 37 and with Smith and Skinner still starting games, he’s going to start like 10-15 games before he’s a UFA. He isn’t a solution to the oilers goalie problems. And this point in his career, he’s either looking for a place to chase a ring or settle with his family. Edmonton is not the place. We haven’t won a playoff game since 2017. Given that he has a say of where he wants to go, I really hope these proposals to Edmonton just stop. If you think about the deal for 1 second from both the oilers and from Fleurys perspective, you’ll see it makes no sense at all.
Hagel to the oilers would be nice and he’s considered this years Coleman/Goodrow type player. With his output this year, he’s worth a 1st.

Trying to figure it out
As much as I hated the Ceci deal when signed, he has been good with the oilers. He’s the only defensive minded RHD we have. Still a little ridiculous he got 4 years, but don’t see him going anywhere.
Whether Keith plays or not is entirely up to him. Ideally he retires, giving the oilers more cap space, then we just give him an office “scouting” job. But given the pedigree of his career, he may stick around. He plays pretty scared, always avoiding physical contact, but not really up the oilers if he retires or not. He for sure won’t be traded anywhere as he had control of that too.
Both Fleury and Hagel are going to cost a lot and doesn’t make sense for the oilers to target. Fleury is a UFA and is 37,… on any given night, Smith/Skinner could play better. Are you really interested in paying a 1st for like 10-15 starts out of him?
Same goes for Chiarot. Going to get a 1st, doesn’t make sense for the oilers to overpay for rentals.
Parayko with his new deal would be a dream. No reason for Blues to ever entertain moving him.
With Barries deal just signed and how he seems to be great friends with the core, I don’t see him getting moved. He is a great puck mover and the emergence of Bouchard doesn’t mean you just dump him. He has looked great with his reduced minutes and Woody so I expect him to stick around.
Kane’s off-season will be very interesting. From how he’s played so far, oilers should absolutely want to bring him back. But anything more than a 2 year deal at like $4M AAV would make me very nervous. I think it all comes down to if he tries to maximize his money. I could see a team maybe giving him 3 years closer to $5-6M. It would be dumb, but if a team offers that he’d probably take it. It’s a very weird situation, because he’s clearly playing like a top 6 winger, but no doubt his history will limit any contract offers.

Ranking based on this year
Nurse is not a A. He has looked noticeably worse than last season. I’d say he has been disappointing.
Bouchard is absolutely not an A. He’s definitely given more responsibility and minutes than he should have been. But he is consistently out muscled and out battled. 2/3 games he’s directly responsible for a goal. He’s an incredible puck mover, but hasn’t shown any compete level in his own zone without the puck.
Puljujarvi deserves a B at least. He looked great the first few months. His last month has been abysmal haha. He literally has 2 assists and no goals in 2022. Like that’s really bad. But they also have new lines every other day so who knows.
I would also probably bump McLeod down one. His skating is so good, but he seems like a perimeter player who is scared to take it to the net. For a player who showed some grit in junior, he must lead the league in flybys. It’s very strange watching him fly around in the forecheck and turn away at every chance he has to finish a check. Same goes for every chance he has to take it to the net. Plays a little scared in my opinion. Hopeful he can add some of that into his game though.
Kassian should be in a category of his own… that guy legit hasn’t had an impact on a game since 2017.. the definition of calling it in.

hahaha very true. I wanted Wallstadt, but in fairness he's likely 3-4 years away. In saying that, its also a lot easier to trade for a starting goalie if an elite goalie prospect is headed the other way rather than a forward prospect from the Q.

Not sure what your point is? Move valuable assets because a goalie played great against you?
Smith was incredible last year but Oilers fans rightfully wanted to upgrade going into this season but Holland couldn’t get it done. Now look at your goaltending.
Fleury is very clearly still a strong goalie. But how does it make sense for a struggling team like the oilers to move one of their few valuable assets to get a goalie who has 1 maybe 2 years left of good hockey in him? He’s also a UFA so no guarantee we get more than 15 games out of him. Not exactly sustainable. Skinner shows promising signs, but the oilers don’t exactly have a sure-thing in the pipeline. With limited free agent goalie available, we are way better off trading for a younger goalie even if it costs more

Fair enough. I am very much against Varlamov being I want to oilers to get a goalie that can be with this team going forward. Varlamov is up there in age and a bit of a down year. Don’t want to continue to make these bets on old goalies bailing us out. To me it’s very short sighted to move a 1st for Varlamov
I didn’t know that Manson was related so maybe that gets him to stay.

Two do the worst trades I’ve ever seen on this site. McDavid and Draisaitl are both top 5 players in this league. Those returns are sooo sooo bad it’s not even funny.
Don’t get a single established player for McDavid.
Then trade Drai for a 35 year old making $10M…
What direction is this team headed haha?
Pretty dangerous to trade both without the conference and one within the division too.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Nurse is not worth his deal and benefited from having a career year the season before becoming a UFA, but you just traded him for a bottom pairing dman with zero offence. Wtf?
Nuge if really effective both sides of the puck and at $5Mish. He’s by no means overpaid and Kakko has not shown anything that’s makes him attractive to move for
All and all this is the worst Oilers blowup roster I’ve seen in a minute

Trading lots of assets for Fleury is very dumb. He’s also really really old. If the oilers want to keep Connor around and have sustained success, you can’t keep relying on 35+ Year old goalies hoping they don’t drop off. See Mike Smith.
I like the Seattle deal.
Don’t hate the islanders deal but seems like a 1st for a bottom pairing dman even with Kassian contract is a bit much.
Philly deal is an overpay IMO. I dont think Sanheim is much of an impact player. A 1st, good prospect and Barrie seems high if you ask me. Maybe I don’t fully understand Sanheims game

Wild that Kassian gets to play with Drai despite not playing a good game since 2017 playoffs. Kassian might be the most disappointing player I’ve ever witnessed.

I almost would prefer Miller for the Oilers. Boeser is no doubt an elite shooter, but as mentioned already I just think his next deal is way too rich for the oilers. Miller has another year of control and I think his next deal would be a little more reasonable. He also had the physicality and grit that would welcomed. To me, he’s the perfect fit for McDavids wing.
IMO that value is pretty insane for Boeser. That’s pretty much two 1st and two 2nds for Boeser, with no cap getting shipped out. Obviously when you’re dealing guys making $5M+, you need to be taking money back. Kassian would need to be included.

Oilers are all over that deal. Absolutely a yes.
My question is, are the Ducks going to be sellers? Their early success this season caught pretty much everyone off guard. Would be pretty demoralizing for all the players to finally be looking at a playoff spot only to have management sell.
As an Oilers fan, I can only hope that Gibson would become available and that this is all that it would cost.
