Buch trade redo
Signed into my account for the first time in what seems like years to say that this may be one of the worst deals i've ever seen posted. You're proposing two firsts, arguably our top 3 prospects, plus a 2nd and 3rd for a good (not elite) top 6 winger with 1 year left...
You don't see a problem with that? That would be one of the richest packages traded in recent NHL history... lets be real

Oilers 2022-23 w Hoffman wo Barrie Foegele Puljujarvi
Puljujarvi for a mediocre pick is not something the oilers should be entertaining at all. I’m assuming it was a cap move, but moving JP for a pick just to move Ryan to the 3rd line is a major major downgrade. Worst case with Puljujarvi is he is a 30-45 pt 3rd liner. That at $3M is nothing crazy.
Hoffman for Foegele is tough. I used to be a fan of Hoffman and thought his shoot first mentality would be a cheap option for 97’s wing, but Kane has run away with that title. Problem with this swap is Foegele has the ability to be physical so can fit in in the bottom 6. If Hoffman doesn’t fit in the top 6, he is as good as useless IMO

Final pieces
That NJ is the definition of poor asset management… Puljujarvis ceiling is infinitely higher than M.McLeods and worst case he ends up a 30-40 pt 3rd liner with good advanced stats.
M. McLeod absolute best case turnout is a 30pt 3C, but way more likely a gritty 4th liner.
There’s no way you even consider this deal if we didn’t have his brother. The deal in itself is a guaranteed loss for the oilers in terms of value

Yea...Moving a decade + of Holloway, a 1st and 2nd for 20-30 games of Kane makes a lot of sense. Who needs high end prospects with on their ELCs to win cups anyway?

Oilers Kane Cheap Bottom 6
I don’t disagree that Kane will receive a huge haul if/when he gets dealt.
But the oilers certainly are not the team to do that… you don’t move a 1st, 2nd, top prospect and 2 roster players for a rental when you’ve been on 1 deep playoff run in the last decade+…. A Patrick Kane is not the “missing piece” the oilers need to push them over the edge…. Still way more questions on the back end.
Like I would imagine that package could net a pretty decent top 4 dman with term left. A forward rental makes no sense for the oilers.

Was that reported? Never actually heard that. I haven’t actually heard anything about oilers being on Chychrun at any point ever haha.
I think Chychruns deal is just very valuable in a cap world. He’s a very solid #3 IMO. These guys are signing for $6M+, so if you can save some money I think it’s worth it. The picks will hopefully be late. Also if you were to make a deal, how could you not look include Broberg? even before the Kulak extension, he would have been locked behind Nurse/Chychrun for 3 years minimum. Add in Kulaks extension, there’s literally no room on the left side. I think Kulak is a perfect 3rd pairing dman who can play up if needed. I still don’t like him being a regular top4. No questions asked he can easily play those minutes. But his game is definitely limited, and he is more of a #5 on a cup winning team. Just my thoughts.

Depth forward. Good season with Carolina, struggled this year in Edmonton. As mentioned above, I gave near zero thought on which team. More aimed at moving him for a mid pick to any team. Did not mean to offend haha

Yes! Yes! Yes!
If a Chychrun deal happens (which doesn't sound like the oilers are in on), build holland a statue. Kulak is a great signing, but on a cup winning team, he is a 3rd pairing guy who can play up if needed.

Like the idea of Deslauriers and Perron. Although I wonder if Perron in chasing a bigger number given how he has been on bargain deals his whole career.
Don't like the idea of Zadorov. After watching him a lot the last few seasons, I think he is a #5 dman on a cup winning team. Giving him big money to play top 4 is not smart. He just doesn't skate well enough to play top 4 minutes.

After Kieth retires
It’s just crazy how much sense Chychrun makes. Yes I know a top 4 dmen signed to a great deal is on every teams list, but especially for the oilers.
Not only is Burse the only current NHL level LHD on our roster right now, but it’s also clear he isn’t a bonafide #1.
Chychrun would ease the pressure off nurse. You could have one of them on for 50mins per game.
Perhaps the biggest reason the oilers should act on him is he doesn’t have trade protection. How many times has a good player wanted out of their current situation but blocked any move to the oilers with their NMC/NTC.
I personally believe that is a very fair offer. They get a good haul of picks, a reclamation project with high potential and an offensive dman.
I would almost prefer moving Foegele and keeping Barrie, but not that big of a deal.

Realistic Ideal Offseason
Fine with the contracts handed out aside from Husso.
The idea of him is slowly growing on me as I don't trust Hollands ability to swing a good trade for a starter, and Husso is pretty much the only good free agent. But the max I would becomfortable giving him is Dreidgers $3.5Mx3. The sample size is just way too small to commit anything more. And as we have seen, Dreidgers numbers look a lot different when going from Florida to Seattle. Nurse/Keith/Bouchard/Barrie/Ceci is a pretty big drop off defensively speaking from Krug/Faulk/Parayko/Bortuzzo/Scandella/Leddy

LOL like I said.......... Quinn has a higher pedigree. He's a higher draft pick and a year ahead in development. Bourgault is younger so of course he is still in junior haha. What point are you trying to make?
The picks are a wash. Quinn is more valuable than Bourgault, but both are still prospects. Foegele is probably more valuable than Girgenson. That leaves Puljujarvi. He is highly valued by literally everyone aside from a handful of old-school writers who strictly look at G's and A's. Theres no question he is a legitimate top 6 winger who is only 23 and a behemoth of a human being. Thats gotta be worth something, no?

Lol this is so bad.
Kane contract is probably too light
Sabres deal is borderline offensive. Quinn and Bourgault at probably valued relatively similar to their respective team. Both recent 1st round picks. Quinn has higher pedigree but both prospects are just that. Prospects. Neither are bonafide superstar studs, but won't know for sure until down the line. Both teams like their guy so I don't expect people to agree. That leaves Puljujarvi and Foegele for Girgenson. JP is an analytics dream. He is obviously not offensively producing as expected, but he plays so well and the numbers of everyone he is on a line with improve with him. He is also a fan favourite. Foegele is a good 3rd liner. Started out slow, but also just got traded for the 1st time. He has a fair contract so there isn't much to dislike about him. Girgenson is a borderline 3rd liner. You are pretty much giving away Puljujarvi for nothing....Good job mate
Stolarz is not getting anything close to that. Oilers laugh at Skinner for Stolarz. So adding in a 2nd and a fan favourite in McLeod is just asinine. Stolarz was a borderline NHL backup in previous seasons. He is having a nice little run with the Ducks, but needs to prove a lot more before he starts getting interest or a return like that. Wouldn't be confident expecting him to replicate his numbers going forward.

Contracts seem fair… wouldn’t be surprised if they try to get at least a 2 or 3 year deal for Yams.
Don’t understand moving Yams though… especially at the contract you have him signed to. If they manage to sign all those players you suggested and they need the cap space, a player like Foegele will be gone before Yams.. Yamamoto is better defensively, offensively, and you could argue physically some games…

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RWellington</b></div><div>First and foremost, this is a great comment with actual dialogue.
1. No, that goaltending Duo is no where near good enough. The issue I have is who can the Oilers get this offseason realistically? Keumper likely resigns in COL, Campbell no thanks, Fluery won't come, Husso maybe but he scares me
2. Keith & Smith both should retire and I hope they do, if they do the bigger question is how does KH spend that money
3. Kassian is either dumped or bought out imo, that being said Myers could play in a 3rd pair role
4. Armia is having a very down season, but in the past he has played as a responsible 2 way fwd. Perhaps you could get MTL to retain more salary but in a 3rd line role I think he could succeed in EDM
5. Tuch is the contract comp for JP & Kapanen is the contract comp for Yam
6. Kane has been a great add for EDM, I would prefer a 2 yr deal with guys like Holloway & Broberg needing deals in 2024/2025
7. Barrie is a valuable player, possibly worth a 1st round pick to some teams. My issue with him is I see him as a redundancy due to Bouchard, who moves the puck well on the PP and 5v5 (yes there are still some growing pains happening).</div></div>
1) I do agree the goalie free agency market is very dry this offseason, so unless a big trade is possible, we won't be blown away by improvements made. Having said that, if you can keep it to 3 years at a reasonable AAV, Husso might be the play. He looks like a steady goalie. With the small sample size, obviously there is risk (ex. Dreidger)
2) My guess is any free money goes to more washed up vets or guys he liked in Detroit. Seems to be a pattern here.
3) Yep
4) I know he has had good years in the past and everyone on MTL is playing pretty poor aside from a few people, but even with retention, thats just not a good player to target. At $2.5M, if everything goes to plan and he bounces back, he is worth his contract. Anything less than his best makes it a bad contract. Oilers can't afford anymore bad contracts. With all the dead cap space, and now Nurses albatross of a contract, this team does not have many bargain contracts (McD, Drai, Nuge, Kane are pretty much it (not including ELCs)). Not to mention you want Holloway in the top 9, so no need for a player like Armia.
5) Agree
6) Agree
7) I never really understood that argument. "Bouchards emergence" makes Barrie expendable??? This team has been dying for puck movers on the back. That is not a strength of Nurse, Kulak, Keith, Ceci, or Russell. With the speed of todays game, its a super valuable skill. Bouchard is putting up decent offensive numbers, but he is consistently losing battles and looking flustered all over the ice. He is a long ways away from being a trusted dman. We even saw this season already, the game both Barrie and Bouchard were out of the lineup. They spent the whole game in their dzone and when they had pps, couldn't hold offensive possession for more than 10 seconds. It was one of their worst games of the season. I will certainly agree that if you can find a cheaper player that can be as effective as Barrie, then I have no problem moving him, but I don't know who that is. Like the second Bouchard were to miss and game, you immediately go to Keith running the pp? Because thats where we are at right now. Nurse looks bad on the pp. Idk, I just feel like Barrie brings a valuable skill set and is by no means overpaid for what he bring.

We happy going into year 8 of McDavid with that goaltending duo? Really? Like we are ok with that?
I am praying Keith retires. He has been bad more often than good and tying up nearly $6M is crippling to this team. Not that Holland would be smart with all the money we'd get from Keith retiring, but still.
Really hoping Smith is done too. At least he doesn't have a NMC. He can either ride the season on the LTIR or enjoy being away from his family in Bakersfield. I am concerned that Holland has too much respect for Smith.
Fine with the Kassian deal. Needs to be off this team.
From what I have heard, Armia isn't great, so don't think taking on 3 years of his deal is worth it. Not worth it.
Like all the RFA contracts you gave. All team friendly while still being relatively generous to the players.
The more and more I see Kane play, the more and more I want them to keep him. Ideally a $4M x 3 years contract is what he gets, but if he goes off in playoffs, I'd be inclined to give a little more.
Feel like I'd want to keep Barrie still. I think he is a punching bag for absolutely no reason. He is paid as a #4 dman, looks good on the pp, and is a good puck move. We do not have enough of that to make him expendable imo.

Yikes. I'd want no part of that Kane contract. I love how he's played but if he wants to chase a bag, Oilers should stay clear. Max I would do is 2 or 3 years at $4M. If he has an amazing playoffs, maybe that gets pushed to $4.5M, but anything above is crazy.
Also care to explain dumping Yamo and Barrie for nothing? Yamamoto has been great. Barrie does exactly whats expected and in no way is overpaid. He is an offensive, puck moving dman. Teams love to have. It would be a mistake to move him.
Agree with dumping Kassian, but packaging two good players just to dump Kassian is dumb

Offseason
I am leading the charge to move Kassian out of Edmonton. Despite him playing some of his most engaged and consistent hockey the last few weeks, he has been way too inconsistent for the prior 2-3 seasons. However, the worst case scenario for him is that he's overpaid by like $1M, but can can still be effective in the bottom 6.
Mrazek is not a good goaltender. Adding him forces you to have a duo of Mrazek/Skinner next year, which given Skinners small sample size and Mrazeks poor play, installs zero confidence. Its objectively a downgrade from our already average to below average goaltending for the Oilers. It's ok to have an underperforming bottom 6 winger. He doesn't play too many minutes, doesn't PK, so most of the time he is just unnoticeable, but still has the ability to fight and bring physicality. When you have an underperforming goalie, it's a lot more visible and costly, as I am sure you have seen out of Mrazek this season. Don't need that $3.8M cap hit handcuffing us from improving our goaltending.
1 for 1, it's a bad deal for the Oilers. The fact that you have the oilers retaining on 2 years of Kassian is just straight up off the mark.
