Robertson is playing just well enough to continue as an NHL player. His value is just above league minimum currently.
Benoit is finding a home in Toronto filling a role that the Leafs desperately needed. However his value would instantly diminish with a couple trades/signings. Hes a 1-1.5 mill over 2 years depth option on most NHL teams.
If carrier and pesce get that type of dollar and term every hockey player on earth better fire their agents and hire the person that got them those deals.

kicking the can
Liljegren has done nothing more with ice time this year when given an opportunity to do so then he has done in previous years. If the Leafs make one move to bring in a defenceman he might find himself in tbe press box much like last year. Hes done nothing to earn that evaluation and term. Also no NHL team is giving him that money and term when they can get a UFA guy to do the same thing for less money. Ethan Bear has similar numbers to Liljegren and is arguably better and he just signed for 2 mill or so

offseason
In what world is Liljegren a 5.5 mill defenceman. Ethan Bear just signed for 2 years at 2.06mill and has numbers in the same ball park at Liljegren. Kandre miller had 43 pts last season and just signed for 3.8 mill. I like Liljegren but he has done nothing to deserve this contract. Players that do what Liljegren currently does can be found every offseason in the UFA market for much less money then this evaluation.

Taking the risk
Its actually interesting how PLD and his camp have intelligently manipulated his situation and convinced at least one team LA that his career high 28g and 63pts were not the player he is and that he is in fact a superstar and that the reason was several teams fault and not the players. Every average player needs to hire this agent and every agent needs to take notes. PLD and his agent somehow someway got a team to pay an average player 8.5 million with term. Truly well executed

Liljegren has done nothing but prove hes any more then a bottom pair defenceman. A year ago he wasnt even a playoff regular for the Leafs and he gets a 2mill raise. U gave a 2nd pair guy in Roy 6mill over 6 years but dont want to pay Zadorov 4+mill to be a 3rd pair guy. Lets use this logic all the time with both Zadorov and Liljegren.
Tanevs value would likely be a 2nd. If its far and above that, like this trade suggests the smart move would be to not overpay and just offer him a contract as a UFA.
Robertson for a 2nd does nothing for the Leafs. If thats whats on tbe table the Leafs just keep him.
Minten and Cowan are not both going to be on the team next year. Cowan is 2-3 years away and Minten didnt look like an NHL player in his 4 regular season games hes probably a year or 2 away from regular NHL impact.

Lily for tanev is never going to happen
This is terrible asset management on the Leafs side. Value isnt the problem in this trade. Tanev can be had as a UFA in the offseason. This trade fixes one hole and creates another. So i agree with ur assessment.

I think Calgary would be looking for a little more than what they got for Zadorov (3rd and cond5th) in a possible Tanev trade. Reports are Calgary would want 2nd to start with. Which seems about right. The Leafs dont have a 2nd so maybe a prospect Calgary covets to start.

Could it be realistic
Zadorov (ufa) was traded for a 3rd and Cond 5th. Savard would hold similar value to zadorov. Obviously adding value to Savard as hes under contract for another year. For sure this has the makings of a deal that could get done.

Liljegren has done nothing to deserve 3.49mill at 5 years. He was a healthy scratch in the playoffs last year and if the Leafs add defence at the deadline he could find himself in the same position.

If the Leafs are smart they would just wait and sign Tanev as a UFA if thats the price.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>zambonidriver</b></div><div>You absolutely have a point, and I agree. To piggyback on that, they need to see what they can get for expiring UFA’s like Bertuzzi, Domi, and maybe even Brodie and McMann? If they can get some picks or any sort of value for those guys, I would do it. Go into next season with Matthews and Nylander with bigger contracts and less team cap space, see what they’ve got in some of their prospects and Marlies and see who can take a step. And then the following year, when Tavares and Marner are off the books is when you go for it. Re-sign Tavares on the cheap as a 3C or second line left wing. Let Marner walk if he won’t take a discount. Hopefully Minten and Cowan are ready, and hopefully Knies has come into full form. The remaining enormous amount of cap space can be used to bolster the lineup accordingly. But damn do they ever need to decide if they are buyers or sellers, because if they are punting, letting guys walk for nothing once again would be majorly disappointing.</div></div>
I think LA is an example to follow. Just allow Treliving a couple offseasons of moves and UFAs then hopefully patience pays off. Even tho patience is going to be the hardest thing for leaf fans to accept. Facts are just that and the fact is the Leaf are a good team but not a great team. The have great/good players but are not a good team.

A full offseason 25 or so Million for Tree to build a team and try again. Just need to accept that maybe going all in on a middle of the pack team isnt the right decision. Still a playoff team this year but maybe next year if the players prove to the league that they are an elite team thats when u spend. LA is a good example of a team that did something similar and look at them now

Leafs would have interest in a Gudbranson type. His underlying numbers have been (OK) recently. It would need to be at least 50% retention and very little going back to CLB.

Why not just keep Liljegren and the 3rd and sign Tanev as a UFA. A deal like this is bad asset management. I get what ur trying to do and Tanev should definitely be a target but it needs to be done a different way or its a hard no.

No educated fan is saying hes not worth 6-7 mill short term in the league. But if he wants to remain a leaf and be captain it is going to be a major major discount . He will take a 3-4 mill deal from the leafs or he wont be a leaf its pretty simple.

Leafs - Blues - 1 and done
Leaf fan here. Honestly I am asking myself, "does this make the Leafs current roster better"? So the Leafs get a top line winger in Kyrou to replace Nylander. Kyrou is younger and is essentially a pt/G player which is similar to Nylander. Is Nylander better than Kyrou? Id say yes, but not miles better. So there is good value there especially with cost/term certainty. For me Parayko is exactly what the current Leafs management is looking for in a defenceman, he skates very well, hes huge, and is at a manageable cap number going fwd as the cap is projected to increase consistently. Essentially the Leafs aquire a long sought-after partner for Rielly and a winger Kyrou witha cap hit that is very manageable for the Leafs moving FWD. The Leaf lose a top player in Nylander which sucks but the cost/term uncertainty this deal makes sense. Reaves 4th line ,Timmons has never stayed Healthy but i do think there is game in him and Samsonov who looks to be a career backup (maybe). So i do think this makes the Leafs better today. Making the picks work is difficult. I think the leafs would want at least one 2nd rounder back if they are trading two 1st.
Its extremely difficult to make trades in the NHL but i am waiting for Treliving to make his mark on this team with a big trade. It would take some nuts to pull a deal like this off.

that contract Parayko is on has like 6 years left... its an absoluely brutal contract and significantly hinders his trade value. he is not worth even CLOSE to nylander lmfao give your head a shake man that's ludicrous</div></div>
Saying that i believe the Blues would start with Nylander does not mean that i believe that Parayko is worth Nylander. U can ask for a million dollars for a 10cent house it doesnt mean u will get it.
