Guentzel would be a top 6 NHL forward, a 1st, and a blue chip prospect. Tor can't afford him

Yeah, but i don't think it's far off the mark. Steeves is trending in the right direction. To me if he'd swap the 3rd to a 2nd or add Minten this would be a good deal.

I think Calgary would be looking for a little more than what they got for Zadorov (3rd and cond5th) in a possible Tanev trade. Reports are Calgary would want 2nd to start with. Which seems about right. The Leafs dont have a 2nd so maybe a prospect Calgary covets to start.

I'd be happy with Niemela + 5th and hopefully Abruzzese or 3rd

That's just the Leafs biased media talking about a 2nd. The real cost is a 1st+ or a player/prospect worth a 1st that the Flames can use. Minten or Knies is about it and I'm not sure Minten is worth a 1st (close though).

I agree the 2nd+ is the price for Tanev but since the Leaf's don't have one this deal gets them more than Zadorov

He's not worth a 1st, Knies or Minten.

Do I think they can get a first its possible but if it was offered they would have moved him already.

I agree Guenzel is a top 6 forward. I look at a 1st + good prospect + We don't have a 2nd but yes Steves could be swapped out with someone else

Guentzel is not a top 6 forward, he is one of the best forwards in the NHL. I can't think of a player of his calibre being traded in season since Hossa.

A Tor trade for Guentzel would look like:
Knies + Bertuzzi / Domi + 1st
Or
Minten + Cowan + Bertuzzi / Domi + 1st
(That is Bertuzzi or Domi, not both)

Both of which are more than Tor would want to pay, which is why I don't see it.

He's a pending UFA on a non playoff team. if he's not going to be resigned then he needs to be moved.

So pending UFAs don't bring back players like Bertuzzi or Domi and it would make no sense as both are pending UFAs themselves.

With that said the return would be a 1st + Solid Prospect +

I agree my trade is light but that's why the title is "what's the cost of"

Bertuzzi and Domi make sense in terms of Pit getting an NHL player to plug into Guentzel's spot. Also salary balance.

I'm not trying to be negative or disparage you. Based on the calibre of player and the reports of what he would fetch, my suggestions would fit the bill.

I think a 1st + Solid Prospect is light. Low 1st + NHL player + Blue Chip (can't miss / highly ranked) prospect.

Since Tor doesn't have a prospect ranked higher than 50ish, they would need to include both of their top 100 prospects. Or Knies.

I don't think Tor would pay that.

The reason I say Bertuzzi and Domi don't make sense is because the are both UFAs. Getting an NHL player with term would make sense for the Pens.

I meant for it to read he's worth a 1st + Solid Prospect + (another pick prospect or RFA )

There would be no way they would give us Knies or Miten + Cowen for a rental

I don't think they would want to either but that's what Guentzel would cost. There have been VERY few players of his skill available at the trade deadline over the years.

I can't honestly think of a player as good as Guentzel who was a rental being traded at the deadline since Hossa. He cost the Pens their best prospect (ranked in the 30s at the time), two cheap middle 6 forwards, and a 1st.

I think Guentzel would go for:
1st + NHL player (for salary and replacement) + top 30 prospect

Tor doesn't have a top 30 prospect so they would have to give up a former top 30 (Knies) or two current top 60 (Miten and Cowan).

I could be proven wrong but that's how I see it.

That was a long time ago and at the end of the day they gave up a 1st and a prospect. Colby Armstrong and Eric Christensen did not add much value to the deal. One thing you don't take into consideration is that Dubas knows the Leaf's prospects well and might covet players that might not be highly rated.

At the end of the day most GMs make their biggest mistakes at the trade deadline.

How do you figure Armstrong and Christensen didn't bring value?
Player A:
25yo, former 1st round pick with:
37 goals and 98 points in 181 games
That goal (0.82) and points (2.17) per 60 would rank 171st and 138th if compared to this season

Player B:
24yo former 3rd round pick with:
33 goals and 66 points in 143 games
That goal (0.92) and point (1.85) per 60 would rank 141st and 189th if compared to this season

Player C:
28yo former undrafted FA with:
81 goals and 162 points in 419 games
That goal (0.77) and point (1.55) per 60 would rank 188th and 228th if compared to this season

All 3 players make around 1MM

Comparable players based on those stats:
Player A: Nino Niederreiter (but cheaper)
Player B: Kevin Hayes (but cheaper)
Player C: Jimmy Vesey

Player A is Armstrong, B is Christensen, C is Dupuis

So the Pens gave up two, young middle 6 guys who were under 25 and had lots of upside. Now, they didn't add much IN HINDSIGHT, but at the time they were young pieces this team was building with.

You are correct in that it was a long time ago, but I challenge anyone to give me a better comp. 29yo winger, making 6MM on an expiring deal, who has just had two prior seasons of 35+ goals and is on pace for that again by the trade deadline.
