Description
With no deal in place for Tavares, the NYI don't want to lose their biggest asset for nothing in FA and get a haul for him as a rental. WPG knows they're all in on this year and need to make moves. Hutch is claimed off waivers, and Mathias is traded to alleviate CAP concerns going forward because they will likely have all their rookies hit bonues and can't have overages for the coming years. In all likelyhood WPG can't re-sign Tavares but this lineup would easily make them a contender for the CUP without giving up too much of their future or ability to sign their RFA's in the coming years.

NYI fans might say that's not enough for Tavares but let's not forget...this is for a few months of Tavares.

WPG fans might say that's too much to give up for Tavares...they're in win now mode and this makes them a contender. If they win the cup or even made the final without having to give up any one of Connor, Roslovic, Stanley, Niku, Poolman, Vesalainen or for that matter any true roster player then would it not be worth it?
Also imagine the Jets were able to somehow get Tavares signed to an extension. Having him and Scheifele down the middle for the next few years is Pittsburgh like and the time is now while all their young core are still relatively cost effective

It's a few months of Tavares, but it's the most important months and the price is inflated at the deadline. I don't think it's enough for JT given the recent deadline deal payments. Maybe start a deal around Connor or Morrissey and add some high picks from there. The other thing to consider is NYI was 1 pt out of a playoff spot last year and looked good under D Weight. With the Eberle move and their young players getting some more experience, they could very well be a playoff team at the TDL.

The matthias trade is so weird it makes zero sense. Trade a guy on his last year. I 4th liner that can kill penalties and score 10+ goals. Plus hes not expensive. I don't get the trade. Matthias is not a cap dump you need to pay someone to take.

When teams are in playoff contention.....99% of the time, they do not trade their upcoming UFAs. The Isles will be highly motivated to keep Tavares for a playoff push

If NYI is trading Tavares at the deadline, it's because they have no hope of him signing and believe he's going to test free agency.

If WPG wants to sign him, and plan on a fresh Stanley Cup win to convince Tavares ... the roster better be tight with not weak spots.

What about goaltending? Do WPG fans trust Mason/Hellebuyck?
