I think the team is pretty close. Gotta believe Kapanen is further up in the roster, maybe second line LWer. I don't think Aaltonen has much upside. Maybe Nylander is at 2nd line centre or does Brooks break through.? I have doubts about Bracco being NHL good, but if he is that would help on the ice and cap wise.
If Rosen and Borgman are NHL good, they should get more $$$$, And Dermot looks like he is an NHLer. Maybe there isn't enough money for Gardiner.

In an ideal world Matthews gets Stamkos money at 8.5 and Marner and Nylander get Forsberg money at 6.

As for the future team I ship similar playing styles for line mates.

Gotta love leafs fans. They wont include marner or nylander is any trades, including for hall of famers in their prime (doughty) but they will pay them less than draisaitl two years after his signing despite inflation and the cap going up.

That's hilarious comparing Ericsson to any of the Leafs. The only reason he signed with the Canucks he the Canucks way overpaid him. Canucks couldn't trade Ericsson without 50% retention.
But the three young Leafs are just RFAs, they don't have great leverage unless some team makes an offer sheet. And let's face it, the Oilers panicked . No team was offering that much for Draisaitl. One good year, most of it playing RW with McDavid, gets him top ten forward money in the league? It's a bad deal for 2017, unless Draisaitl turns into Malkin and McDavid Crosby.
When (if) the Bruins play by the CBA rules and hardball with Pasta, you will see a more reasonable contract for similar players.

If Matthews scores 40+, the bidding starts at McDavid money, not less.
If Nylander tops 30, he'll become a top trade candidate.
Resigning Gardiner and making him a top 4 anchor will be the last remnant of the their losing tradition.

Similar situation with Draisaitl, Oilers management grossly overpaid another player. 137 points in 191 game does not command 8.5 million.

Back to my original premise though, Stamkos does and as such, should be the aim for Matthews if his his trajectory continues.

Maybe because Doughty will be a UFA in 2 seasons and Leafs fans want to develop within? The leafs don't NEED Doughty, they don't need to win these next 2 seasons. With Carrick, Liljegren, Dermott and Neilson all being possible top 4 D with Reilly, Zaitsev and Gardiner already there, they have no real need for a top pairing D if its cost its going to hurt them significantly somewhere else.
Arvidsson put up the same point total as Nylander and Marner and got 4.25/season. Marner and Nylander are potential elite players coming out of their ELC and the standard for that is 6 years and 6 million. Do I believe they get that? No. I think they settle for 6.5-7.5/season over 5-7 yrs. But remember the ball is in the Leafs court, if they take them to arbitration they will likely be valued at around 6-6.5.

And comparing them to Louis Eriksson is crazy. Thats like pointing out that Tyler Seguin has the same cap hit as Tobias Enstrom. A good player vs an atrociously bad contract. If you said they are getting the same money as Pavelski, Couture, Forsberg, Schieffle, MacKinnon, Gaudreau or even Erik Karlsson it doesn't seem that bad does it?

Why do folks hate the Leafs so much? For years the Leafs under lousy management spent to the cap with lousy players. Now that they some good players, it's either, you can't keep them all because you will spend too much money, or you are going to have to underpay them. And some of those trades that Leafs HAVE to get a better Dman and HAVE to trade Nylander and Marner and more to get one,

It's kind of funny, because the leafs are way better than this.
