Description
I could see things playing out this way. Wild get a top-6 scorer they covet at a fair salary (500K less than Monahan will make!), and the conditions on the pick give them insurance if he doesn't pop; as for Columbus, they roll the dice on a rising young RHD who happens to be a Blue Jackets legacy and Columbus-born. Meanwhile, Waddell snags Schmidt following the buyout from the Jets, and the deal for McGroarty gives the Jets a solid young RD with first-round pedigree, as well as some additional pick value to make up the difference between the two players. McGroarty starts in Cleveland to get his feet wet in the pros, but moves up quickly if he shows out in training camp/the early months of the season.

Do you mean "help them right now" or in the future? Because they don't really have anything in the pipeline at RD outside of Salomonsson, and they don't even have three RD on the roster right now.

Help them right now. They have plenty of bottom pairing guys.

Well, I'm sure y'all don't really want Severson, so unless you're itching to get your hands on Jake Christiansen or Trey Fix-Wolansky...

I'm genuinely curious, what players (on any team) would help the Jets now, be fair value in a McGroarty trade, and be someone their team would actually be willing to move on from?

It would be nice to get McGroarty but the two teams don't line up well for a trade at all. Columbus doesn't have what the Jets need, wouldn't trade its top prospect for him anyway, and can't outbid anyone else.

It will either have to be a similarly aged and skilled prospect or the Jets add in a larger deal.

There doesn't appear to be anyone suitable now, so Chevy will do his normal set his price and wait.

I think even if Minnesota trades Gus, they wouldn't be able to afford Laine even with retention at this point.

Well, that's what I was trying to do with Ceulemans, who's also a former 1st-round pick and less than 1 year older than McGroarty, and still with two years left on his ELC. Balancing it with pick value seemed like a reasonable path forward. But I respect your deeper knowledge of the Jets.

You know, that's fair, and I was more basing this on Russo's speculation that the Wild would be in on Laine. Maybe Montreal or someone else could be a match instead.

Here's a thought, WJ: what about Provorov in a McGroarty deal? A year to go before FA, but he's a solid 2nd-pair LD. Would that block Stanley/Samberg too much? Would that be worth it? Seems like a guy who'd actually have some value to the Jets.

No, he just gets in the way of Samberg and Heinola. The Jets need top 4 RHD.

Is Samberg really that dude, though? Feels more like a 7/8 D than a slam-dunk top-6 guy. Heinola for sure deserves more of a shot. Stanley is a pylon.

Yeah, he is. I'm not a big advanced stats guy, but apparently his advanced stats were pretty good. He's an excellent bottom pair guy that deserves a 2nd pair shot. I'd rather give the cheaper guy a shot as opposed to an expensive 4/5.

Samberg is really that dude. He was a capable 2nd pair LD last season and he's probably the 2LD now. He's the reason the Jets didn't resign Dillon.

Probably an established NHL top 4 RHD. I think the Jets are more than comfortable tradeing Rutger+ for Rasmus Andersson, or maybe an extra retained Patrik Laine.
