I think this trade is close. I'm not sure if it makes sense for both sides.

There’s just no way BOTH Chychrun and the Boston first are involved. It’ll be one or the other

I think it does, but it involves some aspects that you don’t like.

Forsberg and Chychrun are kind of the tipping points.

If Ottawa believes it would be easy to dump Forsberg, they offer a prospect (Jarventie?) instead of Chychrun.

If Ottawa believes it would cost a good pick to get rid of Forsberg, the inclusion of him plus Chychrun might make some sense.

I’d personally prefer the 25th and a prospect like Jarventie than taking Chychrun/Forsberg at full cost. I believe Boston could do more in FA at forward and then sign a cheaper insurance policy on defense.

I love Chychrun, but his knees and durability are a concern. The risk of falling for his play and giving him a long term contract is one I’m not crazy about with his injury history. I doubt he’s the primary target of the deal.

Last year, Pierre Luc Dubois was highly regarded too. Things change smile

When I first read Garrioch’s report, I thought it was utter horse crap. Then you start looking at the Ottawa salaries allocated to two bad goalies and their inability to sign Chychrun long term, it’s an interesting deal.

I’m curious what Chychrun’s value is by himself right now.

u see what markstrom just got? ullmark is easily far more valueable so if he got a 3LD who has a high ceiling and a 1st ott will easily have to give up at least there 2nd this year + chyc. not to mention ott has 0 leverage in any trade, there goalie desperate and a div rival.

Chych has more value than Ullmark imo lol, Boston just being greedy at this point. If they trade a 1st and Chych theyre pissing away assets like Dorion did.

I believe it’s more tied to Ottawa trying to dump one of their bad goalie contracts as part of the deal.

Chychrun and a first doesn’t make sense without that part.

I don't think OTT or BOS view Chychrun as that valuable, but rather just to make the cap work.

OTT has 3 top4 LD, but rumours were Chych wasn't thrilled about extending, so that makes him expendable for OTT.

BOS doesn't really need a top4 LD with the emergence of Lohrei, but Lohrei is a rookie so maybe they view Chychrun as insurance.

Forsberg is purely a cap/roster spot dump, plus there's the division tax, so OTT will be paying a premium.

And if that isn’t true and Ottawa believes they can get more for Chychrun, they should keep him and Forsberg out of the deal.

It’s definitely feasible without them. In fact, I’d argue it’s probably preferred from this Boston fans seat and I think more of Chychrun than he’s just salary swap fodder. He has value. Just question how much it would cost to dump Forsberg.

Just thought I'd chime in regarding the injury history part.

In the offseason, he changed his training regimen. He said he finally listened to his trainers. Seemed to focus more on stretching (yoga) and flexibility. There's a video on the Sens YouTube channel on it if you care. The result? He played all 82 games this season. I'd imagine he'll take that result and improve on that new routine, instead of just trying to get 8 pack abs.

Could be a fluke. But so are any number of injuries that players suffer playing a physical game.

Ultimately, it could be the case. Hope it is for his career sake. I certainly wouldn’t bet on that before this upcoming year. If he makes it two years in a row playing all the games, you can view it as a success.

An extension on July 1st would scare me a bit unless it was for below market dollars and he is not going to do that.

I’d be fine with either scenario. I don’t believe Ottawa gives up 25th and Chychrun without Forsberg being included.

Markstrom had two years on his deal and was significantly cheaper with Calgary retaining 30%. Ullmark is potentially a rental and it’s not like there are a ton of suitors who aren’t on Ullmarks list looking to acquire a goalie.

If anything Boston is being pigeonholed to dealing with Ottawa for a trade and otherwise are in a massive cap crunch with 12-13m locked up in net.

Chychrun is valuable. Trying to imply otherwise makes no sense. His biggest knock has always been health and he shook that this year playing a full 82 and arguably having the best statistical season of his career. Scored at just under a point per game the first third of the season before DJ was fired.

Throughout the year it came up multiple times that he was excited to stay and that Ottawa is home, how much he appreciates seeing his grandfather who’s in the area and can now see all the home games as he can’t travel… he wants to stay. His comments were simply that an extension hadn’t been discussed with the new management group by the end of the season.

Ottawa has Sanderson signed along with Chabot on the left, yes. The most sensible thing to do would be to move Chabot and keep Chychrun which is being explored but it’s much simpler to move chych on a cheap expiring deal so other than the Chabot to Philly stuff that’s mostly what we’re hearing.

Chychrun’s significantly better than Lohrei, that’s not even a question. When he was traded for the 1st and two 2nds (one of which conditionally could’ve upgraded to another 1st) a season and a half ago it was seen as a good move by Ottawa. Go look at the voting on the trade. 170+ for Ottawa as the winner and 12 for Arizona.

So for you to imply that 94 games in a senators uniform where he beat his biggest problem and produced statistically that his value took a nosedive from multiple 1st and 2nds to simply not valuable is really not fair to the player or the situation at all.

On top of this, given what Markstrom was moved for with more term on his contract and less money, any implication that Staois would have his first trade be anything close to him getting fleeced is out of the question.

If adding one year of Forsberg at 2.7m costs a 1st in Bostons eyes then Ottawa simply keeps him or moves him somewhere else. Honestly I implore you to go find me a cap dump that had a player with that little money and term cost a 1st because I tried and I don’t think there are any.

If there is a deal for Ullmark it should be straight for Chych with both players extending or straight for 25th.

they have 20m in cap space with ullmark. they are in no cap crunch at all. they have enough money to resign sway there depth and go get lindholm without moving ullmark. if u want ullmark u have to pay. the only hard no that has been leaked is tor which was never going to happen anyway. OTT Cbj Car Det are all teams that are connected to him right now. its also offseason so getting ullmark to waive will be much easier then mid season. pay the price of an elite vesna goalie or keep korpy and forby as ur 6m goalie duo . they both have career sub .905 save% btw compared to ullmark who is a .919%

The reality is you can make leverage up for either side. Doesn’t make it true either way.

Ottawa needs a goaltender and Ullmark is the best out there

Boston could use a redistribution of cap space to secure secondary improvement on the front line

On a side note, I take Lohrei’s potential over the next 5 years at his salary than Chychrun at his. That’s not a criticism of Chychrun. It’s a reality of where Boston will be salary wise and why Chychrun is likely a rental for them.

Listen, I'm just trying to rationalize why the package is rumored to be this. I'm not implying Chych is a bad player, I'm more so saying both parties probably don't value him as much as you, me and others on this site do.

Yes obviously Chych is better than Lohrei right now, but for BOS, he isn't a need for them as Lohrei can play with McAvoy, which subsequently lowers Chychrun's value in BOS eyes.

And for OTT, they have one too many top4 LD's, making one expendable. And as you've mentioned, Chych seems the likely one out because Sanderson and Chabot are locked in long term already.

Not to mention, I'm sure Andlauer wants to badly make the playoffs next season. So there's pressure on Staois to fix the holes, and goaltending was certainly a big issue last season. But there aren't that many great options this summer.

I personally don't think Markstrom is an exact comparable to what an Ullmark trade will look like. Ullmark is younger/in his prime, just won the vezina two years ago, and on a really good deal for an elite starter this year. And if there's an extension in place, it justifies the trade price more.

So if Markstrom's baseline was a (possibly late) 1st + a bottom pairing dman, I don't see a (confirmed late) 1st + a top4 LD + a cap dump + the division tax being unreasonable for Ullmark.

Plus there could be other factors making OTT more willing to move on from Chych. Perhaps Staois is targeting a top4 RD in free agency, so getting rid of Chychrun now will open the door to land one.

Clearly Sweeney didn’t agree with your take on the cap crunch. I guess the price of an ‘elite vezina goalie’ wasn’t that high after all.

Korpi can probably do better in an insulated role as a backup but good luck.

In hindsight I think your reasoning was sound but the radar was a little off.

I still think 25th or Chych straight up would have been reasonable. Dumping Korpi with only 25% retained is absolute lunacy. Kasey hurts to give up and he’ll be a great Bruin but I guess we know now that the division tax can go both ways.

Ya this trade is much more win/win for both teams.

I was under the impression there would be an extension already in place for Ullmark, justifying the initial rumor. I guess talks weren't great and OTT is banking on a good year with a taste of living in OTT to entice Ullmark in staying more.

OTT gets their proven veteran starter they wanted, but is a pending ufa. Get out of the Korpisalo contract sort of, but I don't totally think BOS saw him as a cap dump.

BOS gets a 1st rnd pick. A retained 1B that will likely see his numbers rebound in BOS, that can be flipped for more assets. And I'm high on Kastelic also, will bring a much needed big body bruiser with energy in the bottom6.

I see this more as a win for ottawa than boston. People will see korpisalos numbers rebound in boston and immediately chalk it up to having a better team to play with and the return will be super light. The retention on korpi is actually really piss poor when you consider ullmark was moved to help clear cap and the bruins cleared a whole 1.2 million. That first round pick is also just not enticing to me, its value is super low because of how bad this years draft is. I think this 1st wouldnt even get you a 2nd in the 2025 or 2026 draft thats how light this draft is in its talent. Maybe korpi isnt a total cap dump but 3 million for 4 years of a backup is giving john moore 2.75 for 5 years to be a 7th dman or David Backes signing vibes all over again. I dont want to be negative because the points you bring up are all very good, its just hard to look at this trade in a positive light.

The best thing I can say here is I hope kastelic does well, hes like brazeau but cant score as well, so a young maroon.
If we're going based off draft range I think the bruins should select 1 of two right shot dmen ej emery or charlie elick. Big right shot dmen, dont have a lot of those in the system if any. I wish I had EP premium to see who the consolidated 25th ovr pick was.
