Seth Jones at 50% retention is suddenly a very good contract. Fans of other teams don't understand just how good he was last year. The pairing of Seth Jones and Alex Vlasic (who played 21 NHL games before last year) played top line minutes for the Hawks last year and were outscored 51-50 at 5v5 on a team with a goal differential of -111. With $2 million retention, Jones is no longer overpaid. Marner isn't close to enough from the Hawks perspective. I believe you that the trade doesn't make sense for Toronto, but it definitely doesn't make sense for Chicago either.

Is he overpaid… absolutely, by $1.5 - $2.0m a year but he still plays 25+ important minutes most games and has carried the burden of babysitting young D partners, while playing for a ****ty team.
