How is Chychrun worth a 1st + young roster player on elc? Dude is a mid 2nd pairing LHD (most plentiful position in league) and a pending UFA.

i mean the 1st is either pick 31 or 32. Could flip it to one of the top 50 seconds if you felt that strongly about it but the quality of prospect is pretty similar at those ranges

he’s 34 with 2 years left and is coming off an .895 season and a .905 season. It absolutely does not start with 7th OA

Considering you're also adding Mang who is a consistent 40 pt guy, OTT is adding substantially.

13.7 GSAx this year (7th in the league among goalies w/ at least 30 GP). He's a top tier starter in the league.
Last year was a down year but he has been otherwise consistently a top tier starter.
The 905 SV% is irrelevant considering the Flames had one of the worst post-TDL defensive cores.

that’s all fine and dandy and you’re totally allowed to not like my proposed package for him, but you’re not getting a top 10 pick for him. Too much year over year variance for anyone to gamble that much on a goalie

Flames Pass. Take out Mangiapane, Forsberg and Joseph and then add a decent Waivers Exempt Prospect + Sokolov or Kastelic and that might get the conversation started

If you want us to take Joseph, remove the retention on Markstrom

If you're not willing to give up that pick though then don't expect any retention on Markstrom or the addition of Mangiapane.
A top-tier starter at 3M x 2 plus a fringe top-six winger is equivalent to a blue-chip prospect in my mind. CGY has no interest in a late first, a second, a bottom six F and a mid goalie in exchange for a large part of their core.

I’d hate to miss out on a 90-1A Elite Goalie at 1/2 his Cap Hit Value and Draft another Daigle. It’s just a pick dude and CGY would retain and add something to make it happen, it wouldn’t be straight up

I would argue that a legitimate #1G is worth more to OTT than a top-10 pick at this point in their trajectory. Another losing season in OTT and things will start to get ugly. Obviously a 7OA is massive but Markstrom could be the difference between a wild-card and a bottom-ten finish.

it’s not really ‘just a pick though’, tough to justify trading a full career of a blue chip prospect for 2 years of goaltending. We’re chasing wins sure but i would sure hope they’re a lot smarter about it than that, as much as we could “draft another daigle” we could also just be trading for another alex debrincat

if we’re trading a top 10 pick for markstrom while we have the worst prospect pool in the league we better be chasing for a whole lot better than a wild card finish

Agreed, I just don’t think Marky returns that without major retention + another piece, possibly even VAN’s 28OA or our 2nd OR we need to take a bad contract back

Everybody on here goes on about his age, but he’s still considered elite around the league and plenty of older goalies have excelled in their late-30’s including Hasek, Tim Thomas and more recently Bobrovsky, so it’s not a good reason to me to downgrade his value, especially when he’s an $8mil/yr goalie they can acquire with retention for $3-4.5mil/yr, which allows Cap Space to re-sign or bring in other needs

The probability of actually getting an NHL player after the Top-5 plummets significantly, so who know what you’ll get, if anything, and It’ll take years to find out

Getting an Established Elite NHL Goaltender (=sure thing) for 2 years at 1/2 his Cap Hit and the opportunity to extend him next off-season is very valuable. We would send you a pick in return as well, so you would still have another ticket to the lottery

i mean respectfully that’s just not true at all. Picks 5-7 average about 600 NHL games played (will probably be higher given modern player development). I’d rather play the odds of that than hope i get 80-90 good games out of markstrom (which isint even a guarantee) I like Markstrom, there is nothing that justifies trading a top 10 pick for him. You could add a late first and a roster player and i’m still not doing it

I agree, I would take Markstrom + 28OA for 7OA in a heartbeat.

That’s fine. Dobbersports research shows picks 6-15 have a 65-75% chance of producing an NHL Player who will have played 100+ Games compared to 99.9% of Top-5 Picks. That’s a fairly significant drop and how many of those end up being elite is likely pretty low as well, but I’m sure there’s cheaper options out there depending whether you care about winning or not

the study you looked at was also only 2000-2009. So only 9 picks. The odds skew way further towards hits and nhl games over general history

Sure 2 Backups typically used against weaker opponents and who have never carried a workload over 30GP in a season

You should definitely do that, but you’ll probably want to sign them both, whereas Markstrom will easily play 60+ Games in a season for you by himself

Oh lord 🙄

He was dealing with a groin injury in 2020
His first season with the Flames in 2020-21 was a 56 Game Season
He took time off last season to be with his Wife and their 1st Baby/Child
And this season he was dealing with a nagging lower body and/or hand injury + we were trying to get Vladar in to build his value back up and Wolf in to get him NHL experience

He typically plays 75% of the games in a season barring injury or family matters. He’s super competitive and wants to be in every game. Doesn’t need much rest. Perfect for the Playoffs and part of the reason he’s considered Elite
