The first one is a Tough one. We like Kadri, Coleman & Weegs

On another note, Kakko isn’t worth anything close to a 1st

I’m pretty liberal when it comes to that late first and would be willing to part with it. That said, if the cost is less then I’m game. I still see a lot of upside with Kakko.

Maybe we just roll it back and miss the playoffs for an 8th year? Dorion’s plan failed. Time for a drastic change.

He’s still only 23 and is a former 2nd OA pick. I see so much potential for him given the right opportunity.

You could probably swap Brannstrom or a 3rd Round Pick for him or some other Prospect, like Tyler Boucher maybe

Kakko could definitely still turn things around for sure, but he’s a gamble and inconsistent at this point

I agree. I could get on board for a 3rd or MAYBE a 2nd. I've seen NYR fans throw him away for 4ths and I think he's worth more than that but not a 1st.

Great points by both of you. Maybe I’ve overshot the value a bit here - PTSD from Dorion maybe. Oh, and the rebuild is over. Cheers.

I’d be 100% supportive of a Kakko for 2nd round pick trade.

question for ya as a Flames fan. would Chabot or Chychrun + Boston’s 1st get particularly close to getting Weegar to Ottawa? or is that a “you’d have to completely blow Calgary away” type of situation

I mean they’re both Younger which would be appealing, but ultimately it would come down to whether they wanted to be in and play for Calgary who has a hard time drawing or re-signing players without over paying it seems

We love Weegar because he fits our identity of being Physical & Gritty. He’s provided and shown leadership, emotion and an actual want to be & win here, so it’d just have to make sense for all parties involved.

I’m not particularly a fan of Chychrun’s personally either. He’s great offensively when he’s healthy, but he’s injury prone and I question his defensive abilities & awareness. He’d also need an extension to even consider that move

Chabot’s got 4 years left on his deal and I doubt he’d have any pause about staying in Canada. Chychrun is definitely trickier, because there’s some concern he’ll want to go to the states.

but just for the sake of this thought experiment, let’s say Chychrun extends for 7 years at 6.5M with Calgary right away. does that + Boston’s 1st get Conroy thinking?

Yeah probably. Weegar’s definitely not untouchable

Chychrun’s Canadian as well btw (dual citizen) and grew up playing his Junior Hockey in Ontario

As a Flames fan I'd accept that before OTT hangs up the phone. Basically fast-tracks an actual rebuild for us.
I think CGY is in a much worse position than most realize and I say that as a diehard fan.
The Flames need to rebuild and not retool - IMO they just don't have enough surrounding talent to have any significant success w/ the Coleman / Kadri / Weegar core. Chabot might not be as good as Weegar but he's a 1LD w/ term and relatively young. Batherson and Norris are both top 6 / borderline top line forwards w/ term and upside.
I see the appeal for OTT in adding a proven 2C, a 1RD and a valuable middle-top 6 winger in Coleman. I do think it shifts their competitive window up significantly though. These guys are right in the middle of their primes whereas Norris / Bath / Chabot are still a ways away. Seems like a move made by Staios to get the Sens at the very least back into the playoffs- something they desperately need in that market. If there is regression from Coleman / Kadri though, (esp Coleman considering his career year) I think that is still a significant risk

This is exactly the thinking I have with this type of deal. I really think it’s one that both teams would benefit from. I think both teams need a new look and this trade does just that. Calgary gets players that have talent and term. And imagine a Sens team featuring Tkachuk, Kadri, Greig and Coleman? Absolutely miserable team to play against.
