On average maybe. But it varies on an individual level. That just proves my point, though. With an 8 year extension, at 32 years old he would still have half his contract left to go. CHI isn't giving up 10-20 years of a home grown and drafted high end prospect for 4 years of an aging one with a massive contract. I doubt any team would, honestly.

Agreed with your reasoning of not wanting him, just the take of being 28 and almost out of his prime I thought was incorrect

That’s just not true. Would the Blackhawk’s have traded the first overall pick last year for Mackinnon? makar? Mcdavid? Matthews? Those guys are worth 1st overall picks

No. CHI wouldn't have given up that pick for most of those players. Maybe McDavid, but even then they would have been giving up Bedard, shortened their window, and speed the rebuild up by an impossible margin to build around.

Hitting his prime? He is already well into his prime and he will be 28 when his extension comes due. At which point CHI will still be nowhere near ready to even join the playoff picture, let alone be a true contender. We would squander what is left of his prime and he would likely become a burden in the last few years of his contract.

He just turned 27 last week and NHL players are typically in their prime from 26-30. so my statement about him hitting his prime is accurate.

I never said it made any sense for the hawks but Marner is worth more than that.

IF the 2nd overall pick was to become as good a Marner Chicago would be thrilled. But there is a lot of risk and very little guarantee that he would become anything close to that good.

IF MM waived his NMC to go to a team you can bet that the team has a good idea of what he wants in an extension and that both sides are willing to make it work. so its not even just a 1 year deal.

Read the whole thing again. Also, those prime years go faster than you think. And what I mean is that, by the time CHI is actually ready to contend, Marner will be out of his prime. Why would anyone spend that much on a player who will likely be in decline by the time they are ready? It would be a huge risk that is just unnecessary.

So, idk, you could maybe argue that, with a favorable extension in place, he could return close to that amount of COMBINED value from a team that "needs that last piece", as in multiple picks and players/prospects. But any team in a position to have the 2nd or 1st overall pick is not going to spend it on a "win-now" player. 999 out of 1000 times teams who own that pick are going to make that pick. It is extremely rare for these moves to happen, and they haven't really happened at all in the cap or analytics era.

I can almost guarantee that no team with a top 10 pick would be willing to give it up for Marner. More than likely, any team he would be wiling to waive for will be in a window of contention, and those teams won't have the kind of assets you are talking about getting in return for him.

Maybe in a vacuum you could argue that he is worth that much, or that maybe he is worth close to that in COMBINED value. But no team with a straigt up top 2 pick is giving that up for a player, let alone adding on top of it.

A team won't do it due to their situation not because they hold more value. Teams like Montreal, Utah, Ottawa, Seattle, Calgary and New Jersey would all move their current top 10 pick for a player like Marner as they are all in or entering playoff contention.

Maybe. But most of those teams don't have the need, the cap space, or both. But, yeah, I personally think the most realistic landing spots for him would be UHC, DET, OTT, BUF, or MTL. And all of those teams would require cap out, which would also probably necessitate an adjustment of the value going both ways and skew the perceived value while the actual value might not be as good as you think.

Also, I would assume that TOR would prefer win-now pieces over high picks anyway.

Agreed They need D or G that can step in right away. I think the best fit is a trade with NASH for Saros.

But I think the Leaf's need to sit down with MM on July 1st and ask him Does he want to be a Leaf? if so he needs to talk a home town discount as they can not afford to pay him over $10M if not give us a list and lets see what we can do

Yeah. I think Treliving will need to have some very frank discussions. It's gonna be interesting. I legitimately have been rooting for TOR to do it every year. It'll be very good for the league and amazing for TOR and their fans. I think the most cost effective could be talking Tavares into waiving. But, even with that, one of Matthews, Marner, and Nylander probably have to go, in the long term.

I'm in the mind that is they just hold on past the 24/25 season the cap will just keep going up and the will get the JT money and probably bring him back team friendly and they will be fine but the Leaf's will not burn the year.

Easy no from Detroit. Berggren has more value than a 2nd.
