You don't trade 9-years of Marner for 3-years of Pietrangelo, 1 for 1.

Can’t see TOR doing that, but Larry Murphy round 2 sounds nice.

Did Marner sign an extension in the last couple days that I missed?

Nope, but it would be a surprise if Marner was not willing to sign an extension, so from the Toronto perspective, it could be giving up the opportunity to have Marner for 9-years for 3-years of Pietrangelo.

Also, the OP is basing his proposal on a long-term extension if you check the trade description.

He did say that but that never happens. Marner signing an extension post trade holds not merit on a trade itself. Marner is by all definition a full season rental if he were to be moved this offseason.

Yeah, I don't disagree that it's not realistic but even then I still think the Leafs would have the option to keep him around.

If Marner did want out and this is was the best or only offer available, I'm not convinced that they would be better off with Pietrangelo. They might drastically solidify their D-core for a run or two or three, but I'm sure scoring will still be an issue. Even if it does work out and they end up winning a Cup, it would likely be a one-and-done. Worth noting that Matthews will be a year away from FA when Alex's contract is up, and they will likely not have much of a future on the back end. Alternatively, they could just rent Marner and sign a UFA defender to try achieve the same outcome.

Leafs will absolutely explore an extension before anything else. But I would be shocked if they are willing to even pay him the same amount let alone give him a raise.

I'm not debating the proposed trade at all, in fact I highly doubt Piet would waive to leave Vegas. There will certainly be other offers but it would also come down to where he would willingly waive

you must be new, so i will explain...its very common for a team to allow a players agent to shop around before making a trade to ensure that the new team has interest in completing a long term contract..this is no reinvention of the weel it happens and is reported by many in the know like Friedman (as an example)

Pietrangelo played with Tavares..is from the area and just like Marner could be asked to waive his NTC...not saying this happens..im no insider...im a fan like all others on this platform..having fun making mock scenarios...baffles me that people get all tight up in their panties over these roster compositions (not just mine clearly ive seen many comments on other team creations)..and I keep seeing 9 year extension in this thread..he can sign up to 8 years as per cba with team that owns his rights...a point of leverage for the leafs..if he plays out his contract here and we dont resign he can only sign 7 years with another team.

based on his pres conference today im not sure hes going anywhere

It is very common for teams to allow a players agent to talk to interested parties. However that has no say in trade value as the player is extended or not after the trade is made. Conditional re-sign picks are illegal so any player within 1 year away from UFA is considered a rental in trades. Just look at the Lindholm return, he hasn't signed an extension in Vancouver yet

Because it doesn't make them Cup favorites but more importantly, it leads to a short window to compete. Sooner rather than later, they will need a 2C and secondary scoring will likely be an issue, soon enough Pietrangelo's contract is up/he's not as effective anymore and they would also need a 1RD. Their prospect pool isn't deep enough for them to hope to have potential solutions. At that point, Matthews is 1-year away from FA, and is probably sold as a rental for pennies on the dollar, might as well deal him now for a king's ransom.

If you're trading Marner for older defensive help, better be getting a top 6 F as well, preferably a C. If they could, the Leafs would be better off trading Marner for Theodore + Karlsson or Buchnevich + Faulk than trading him for Pietrangelo.
