Not really. Chabot to Rielly is lateral and the only way Ottawa could afford a Marner type contract is by keeping guys on great value deals like Batherson to make the cap gymnastics work.

In no way does this push Ottawa over the top and teams finishing almost bottom 5 in the league shouldn’t be trading multiple 1sts.

Ottawa needs to make the playoffs. Marner will help with that next year, the two late 1sts won't.

Go make a Sens agm with this same trade and tell me how they fit Marner under the cap with Bath going the other way.

Also we’ve seen very clearly that Marner can help a team get to the playoffs but not through them. The goal is the Cup, not the playoffs.

Tkachuk will help Marner. He needs to play with a power forward. Matthews doesn't play aggressive enough. He'll never be a clutch playoff performer but he'll be more useful on a different team.

As for the cap, the Sens have movable contracts.

I see the Markstrom trade as Markstrom for a 1st and a bunch of throw-ins that don't add any value.

Markstrom is worth the late 1st, with retention he's probably worth a mid 1st, or a late 1st + 2nd.

If we take out one of either 1sts i’d do it. Chabot/Reilly are similar deals, similarly skilled. Bath beside Matthews is a PPG player while being on one of the best deals in the league. Marner is the best player in this deal though, but UFA.

nope, OTT would not do Bath for marner 1 for 1, yet alone add more, Reilly sucks and OTT would not trade Chabot for him 1 for 1

My issue is Chabby + Norris is 16M$ in two very injury prone guys. Running it back and praying they don’t get injured is going to screw us again.

do what VGK and TBL do, put them on LTIR, get 8M rentals and they come back for the playoffs then OTT 16M+ over the cap in playoffs like VGK and TBL were and win cup. Marner is a no show in playoffs, he is being wrecked by most leafs fans, he will want 12M+ that is 2.5 times Bath current cap hit, points arent everything you know....rather have a good Chabot for 41 games over a bad reilley for 82, ENOUGHT with TOR sloppy seconds.....

Marner ON THAT CONTRACT isn't worth anywhere close to that. If they were able to negotiate an extension at $8M and get Toronto to retain $5M, and take out the 2025 1st, maybe. at$10.9M and needing a new contract? Remember that the Sens fired Pierre Dorion.

Batherson is the opposite. Signed for 3more years at $4.9M - AAV under his production.

Reilly ON THAT CONTRACT doesn't have that kind of positive value. He's a 30yo player signed for 6 MORE YEARS. Even if the Sens wanted to move on from Chabot, I don't think they're giving up multiple firsts to bring back older players signed longer. Few offensive D are as productive at 36 as at 30.
