So the thing is, Stamkos could just stay in TB @ $7.8M and would take home the same amount after taxes. Why would he leave, why would TB let him go if $7.8M is all it takes to match the next best offer on the market?

I'll give it a shot.

The scouting report on this site is a little outdated for Barron but sees his upside as a 2nd pairing 2-way D. His production this season is a step down from last season, which I find a little concerning towards his chances of reaching that upside. He's played in chunks of 3 seasons now but hasn't solidified himself as a permanent NHLer.

I'm not going to go off of Farrell's scouting report since it hasn't been updated in over a year. I think he's in a little similar of a situation: his stellar NCAA scoring hadn't entirely translated to the AHL, apparently partly due to injury. I think he has the highest upside of any of these guys.

Koivunen was 6th in scoring in both the Liiga regular season and playoffs this year. Afterwards, he was one of a few decent players as WBS collapsed in the playoffs. He could very easily be fighting for an NHL spot next season. I'm not convinced the gap between Farrell and Koivunen is particularly wide. He's also over a year and a half younger than both Habs prospects, so there's more wiggle room for him to grow still.

Foster's a step down from the other guys here. However, he is also still only 18 and was 3rd in scoring on the 67s this year. Probably a 3rd liner at best if he ever makes it to the NHL.

I'm willing to say Farrell and Barron are the better pair of prospects right now. Am I willing to turn a 3rd and a 4th into a pair of 7ths for that swap? Not particularly.

I'm not sure, but if Stamkos signed with TB for $7.8M (matches your offer for him here) they would still have at least $4.785M left with a roster of 17. They could also increase the term to beat your 3 year offer and get that AAV down.

Put it this way, I don't think MTL should enter a bidding war for Stamkos with Tampa Bay because they would have to overpay to the point it's unlikely to be worth it.

Probably because TBL can't even afford him at $7.8mil aav. I don't think overall salary will be Stamkos' main focus though (obviously there will be a base line amount that would need to be met), but term will be more his focus. If a team offers him 6-7 years (until he turns 40-41, similar to Letang's extension), he will prioritize that, even at a reduced salary ($5mil-$6mil range)

The answer probably lies in the middle somewhere, He'll probably take a 5 year deal (until age 39) anywhere between $7mil and $9.5mil depending on the team offering it ($7mil range for tax free state teams like Tampa, Vegas, etc. and $9.5mil range for like Canadian teams like Toronto, Montreal, etc.)

Pittsburgh don't need RD, we have Karlsson, Letang and St. Ivany. You're also asking for higher picks. Koivuinen is a prospect they wanted from CAR, and we have no reason to trade for another unknown commodity. I don't know anything about Cooper Foster nor Sean Farrell. This offer just does not solve anything we require.

I believe Justin Barron has the highest ceiling out of these 4 prospects. Sydney Crosby was high on this guy two years ago.

I think Barron needs a reset in a market that will appreciate him more. He can learn from Karlsson and Letang, and not be given so much pressure like Montreal is putting on him.

Pittsburgh top-6 is going to be very hard to crack these next couple of years. Justin Barron has RHD #2 potential and would slot in well as 3rd pairing for the next couple years to learn from two of the best RHD in the world.
Ville Koivunen is a middle 6 player. Sean Farrell would likely slot into the bottom six. Cooper Foster was 6th round draft pick with some potential, not sure where he would slot in though.
Barron has much more upside than what the Montreal environment has provided him to grow.

You are one injury away from not having your top three RD. Your only RD in the system is St. Ivany. I appreciate you can sign Nolan Collins off of your reserve lists this summer. Having an extra higher-ceiling RHD, like Barron, would be a good edition to the Penguins. The fit isn't great in Montreal for Barron, but his talent his undeniable.

Don't forget Koivunen was drafted 51st overall and Barron 25th overall. (And Carolina did not part with any A level prospects in the Guentzel trade.)

Both would have to play regularly to reach their potential. We can sign a RD capable of playing when injuries occur, that's not a big deal. The draft order is no longer relevant. Koivuinen has had a great season, I think he definitely has skill and high potential as well. I like him. Pittsburgh has other needs, especially bottom6 not scoring enough, and left defense.
