This is all over the place. The TOR trade depletes futures badly. Then adding trading Jarry and Smith is to add futures? PIT is not close to contending, they should just be adding futures.

The Penguins are giving up a lot of assets here, and the only thing that's gotten better is their top 6. The bottom 6 still leaves a lot to be desired, and both defense and goaltending are worse. No thanks.

Maybe this trade isn’t it, but Pens aren’t trading for futures while Sid is there 🤦🏻

Given they just did exactly that with the Guentzel trade and obviously you are inaccurate with that assessment.

They were outside of the playoffs and he was a pending UFA. This proposal is moving roster players in the off season, which you said the return for which should be futures; totally (& obviously) different

Yes and I'm explaining why the Guentzel trade is the standard. Trading roster players for futures is what they need and likely will be doing. Their days of adding roster players to a contending roster are over.

Maybe that’s what they should do, but they absolutely won’t - Sid (& ownership’s recent moves back this up) doesn’t strike me like he’d be down for a full rebuild . Time will tell but I’d bet money they don’t start trading roster players for futures; only caveat being they could do that, but only to flip the futures for new roster players

Fully rebuilding would be moving the core four. That isn't the same as moving roster players. What "recent moves back this up?" The most recent move is trading an elite roster player for futures.

They brought back Gino & Letang, signed Jarry long term and traded for Karlson - it is way too late to change strategy now. For good or bad, they’re committed to trying to win while Sid is there, no matter the odds against. I kind of agree - Pens owe him that so delaying rebuild for 2-3 years (& hoping you can catch lightning in a bottle)

Malkin and Letang were signed two years ago. Jarry and Karlsson decisions were made last offseason. They might not rebuild by trading away the core, but they have been very open about adding futures and the last decision undeniably followed that as well. So not a single "recent" move has been the opposite.

These deals make them better today. (Significantly better than Detroit or Washington IMO). I doubt this team misses the playoffs.

I don't see this as selling the farm or futures. Although you are literally giving away a 1st and two former 1st round picks, you also clear out the most immoveable contract on the team, pickup some 2nds/3rds and gets players in Robertson (21), Lili (24), Marner (26), Guentzel (29) who will still have enough trade value in 2-3 years that you can use them to kickstart your full tear it down rebuild when Sid retires.

The ideas of a half baked rebuild is absurd. Kyle is smart enough to know it doesn't work. But what being aggressive can do is give him pieces to sell other than Sid/Gino/Malk when those guys are gone.

This team competes for 2/3 years then Marner fetches the equivalent of 3+ 1sts, Guentzel fetches a 1st, Robertson and Lili could both be worth a 1st+ by then. So in 2026 you sell it off and if you just get picks back in the 2026/27/28 drafts you could have 9+ 1sts.

This is smart asset management.

Trying to trade roster players for futures while signing horrible long-term contracts with negative value is not a winning strategy.

What “recent” moves could they have made? They were out of playoffs at TDL so doubtful they would add then 🤦🏻. Come on, you’re playing (& losing) with semantics. They are not going to start trading guys for future picks while Sid is there - the whole hockey world understands that, but you do you 🫡

100% agree with that. But that isn't how most ownership groups operate because rebuilding involves losing millions in the short term to hopefully make millions more in the long term.

Really simple, they could have extended Guentzel. But they traded him for FUTURES which is entirely the opposite of your revisionist history.

They were out of the playoffs ; they can sign him in the summer. Nothing too difficult to understand here I would have thought but 🤷🏻

this is one of those trades where they make the TOR trade so bad, they hope no one notices the awful EDM trade that is never getting accepted.

PS marner sucks. you are stuck with him and his absurd salary requirements.
