Description
The skinny: The Jackets get Draisaitl who in this scenario extends long term 8x11.5

SJ trade gives the Jackets a LD to pair with Severson and swapping positions with SJ.

Not sure either team turns down these offers. But this does make the Jackets significantly better.

The math doesn’t work out. Edm while talented has not been able to win in the playoffs. The depth is not there. Teams that win cups have depth. Edm doesn’t have it. And you think McDavid is only getting a 2 mil raise?? Get real. This guy knows his value and teams will be lining up to sign him. Same thing for Draisaitl. The Canadian dollar is a huge issue here. He is likely signing his last big contract. He will want to make his money considering he signed at a steal for Edm on this last contract.

First, I used your numbers - you were the one that suggested a $2.5M raise for both McDavid and Draisaitl. Here:

... pay Draisaitl around 11+ mil and give a hefty increase to McDavid, who on the open market, could garner at least 15 to 16 mil per?

Second, all NHL contracts are paid in US dollars, so the Canadian dollar is not any issue whatsoever.

Third, Draisaitl didn't sign "at a steal", he got paid MORE than his closest comp (Pastrnak) at the time. It only appears to be a steal because he developed into the second best player in the world after he signed that deal.

Fourth, McDavid took less money on his last contract as a favor to the team. I fully expect him to take less than he would get on the open market again.

Fifth, the Oilers have won in the playoffs, they went to the division finals last year and the Conference finals the year before, both times losing only to the eventual Stanley Cup champions. The Knights openly said last year that the Oilers were their toughest opponent. And they only beat them by illegally axe chopping Draisaitl's arm.

Sure, but I don't see him doing it this summer. If he doesn't want to re-sign in 2025, it doesn't really make a difference to him if he's traded (he has full control over where and if he is traded) or if he goes to UFA. Either way, if he wants out, I think Columbus should go after him. I do question whether the price paid here is worth it though. As I said, though, I expect him to re-sign in Edmonton.

As do I.

But Oilers management will know this summer if he's willing to re-sign or not, because he's eligible to re-sign as of July 1st and they definitely will be having conversations. So if he intends to go elsewhere they will know 12 months in advance.

I'm pretty sure if Draisaitl goes, McDavid will too. If Draisaitl re-signs, so will Connor. They're tight.

Maybe. If he says it depends on how they do in 24-25, they might bet on another shot at the Cup with him and McDavid.

On a side note, though I would of course dearly like to see Draisaitl in Columbus, it would also make me very happy to see the Oilers win a Cup with McDavid and Draisaitl. They are so much damn fun to watch.

I know that but Canada has higher tax. That matters. I said 11+ mil that means this is on the low end. One could think with the cap going up, most players are now going to start moving towards FA again. The reason FA has been lackluster the past few years is bc of the flat cap. That is going to change. McDavid did them a solid and has got nothing to show for it. Do you think he really is just going to do it again? Draisaitl knows his value. Edm cannot go into this season without Draisaitl under contract.

Edmonton is going to turn into the new Tampa Bay on here with the we'll take this guy off your hands because you can't afford to extend him posts. Drai is a top5 player on this planet, if he wants to extend then Edmonton will find the cap space to extend him.

Sharks would be dumb to pass. Giving up a pick in the 14-16 range for one in the top 7 range……Ferraro isn't that valuable. Sharks jump on that trade before CBJ snap out of it and take withdraw that offer

Provorov coming to SF with his history. You think about it. Grier is not stupid enough to bring that guy, any staals, or a returm of Reimer
