Description
Matheson vs Guhle. Do you think the Habs can/will really move forward with both. What’s the play here, moving Guhle to the right? If not, which one will be traded? For what? And when?

Keep both
Trade one or 2 of Harris,Kovy & Barron this summer , and Savard (at TDL) if they’re not contending

IMO it's very unlikely they keep both beyond next year and right now it's 50/50 on which of the two they decide to move. On the one hand you have Guhle, a big mobile D man that is rarely caught out of position (Weber type but way better skater) on the other hand you have Matheson a big mobile veteran D who puts up massive points. The question is will Hutson and Mailloux put up enough points to alleviate the loss of Matheson or can we find another Guhle type of RD to offset the loss of him. Both will be hard to replace and both will be missed when/if they get moved.

I would like Hutson and Reinbacher in Laval next year. Or have Savard and Hutson on the 3rd pairing.
Matheson and Mailloux(raise his value and gameplay for the NHL).
I see it more like Matheson or Savard will be moved(or both) at the TDL 2025. Unless somehow Habs are in the playoff picture.

The problem is, teams won't move 10 year vet leaders when they are entering their cup window. Savard may be moved but I kind of doubt it, I also expect that both will be extended (Matheson 3-5 years, Savard 1-3 years). I think being 100% honest that the fact that both are also Quebecois makes it even more unlikely either will be moved and neither will be resigned. Right or wrong, that's how I see it from the teams perspective

Let's be honest. Montreal is NOT in a cup window. Not ready to truly compete for 2-3 years(basiccaly when Reinbacher is ready to play in the NHL). So, they are able to move 10-year vets. I do agree that Savard is wanting to stay. Matheson I am not sure. He may want to win a cup before "settling in Montreal on a second stint".

Matheson is signed until 2025-26 (2 more seasons) if Habs are entering their cup window in 2-3 years then that aligns exactly with Matheson's extention and he may just want to ride out the 2024-25 season in Montreal knowing that the 2025-26 or 2026-27 season is when they will be contending. That I why I said the team might not be willing to move Matheson or Savard and my look at extending both. If you move them at the 2025 tdl then in 2025-26 or 2026-26 you have to go out and find some veteran replacements that might not gel with the team as well as these two do. If you extend Savard for 3 years that takes the contract to the end of 2027-28 (1-2 years into their cup window) and Matheson 4 or 5 then you lock up the vet leadership that you know will gel with the rest of the team. I know it blocks some of the younger guys but the team likely values Matheson and Savard differently than the fans do. Savard is the easier of the two to lock in since we only have Reinbacher and Mailloux who can push him out and that would only push him down to 3RD, if Konyushkov is coming over and does push for a spot, it won't be until the 2026-27 season and Savard could be traded or possibly retire by then

I think MTL rushed Guhle.
He needs more time to develop. You really don't know what you have there yet.
As for Matheson I don't know what MTL did. He left PIT an actual competent player whole career turned around...now...he's going down hill fast again.

What are you talking about? Matheson is playing the best hockey of his career right now. Career highs in TOI, goals, assists, points and blocked shots, sure his possession metrics have taken a hit but that is expected with a D corps comprised of mostly under 25 full time players who are only in their 2nd or 3rd year in the league, the mistakes from those youngsters will get ironed out and Matheson's possession numbers will get better as a result as well.

Oh no... LuckyMoneyPuck is right. Since he got to Montreal he has changed but for the better. Seems like something ignited with him. I am really on that Petry for Matheson trade.

you go look at those 5v5 numbers and figure it out.
Even your points thing is just wrong.
11G 17A in pit
4G 17A in MTL this year
Career highs......

His 5v5 play is going down hill there and those are the most important numbers.
We rehabbed him... you are sinking him tears of joy

I never said his career highs were at 5 vs 5, I said he had career highs in TOI, G, A, P and Blks, perhaps you should understand the distinction before commenting back. Also I literally explained that his play hasn't dropped off, it's that he is playing with less experienced guys like Guhle, Harris, Barron, Struble and Xhekaj, their lack of situational experience causes them to make mistakes that lead to extended D zone and shortened O zone times. As these young guys gain experience they won't get hemmed in and will be able to extend their O zone time, meaning Matheson's numbers will also increase. It is much easier for Matheson to produce at 5 vs 5 when his partner is Letang and he knows he has an experienced guy over there to cover than having a young guy on the other side and worrying about the guy on the other side. Montreal hasn't "ruined" Matheson, we have asked him to take on more of a leadership role than he had in Pittsburgh which will just make him an even better layer in the long run.
