Why would the leafs want to age themselves like that in the Flames trade?
The guys 35 years old. How many "decent" years do you think he has left? maybe one? to maybe? and you want to give up 2 of the leafs top 10 assets for him? PLUS a 4th?
I dont know if you were around back then but the leafs used to do this EXACT thing. Trade away all their top young prospects for Older aged "stars" in the twilight of their careers.
Example: Traded for : Owen Nolan, Brian Leetch, Ron Francis, Nick Foligno , ALL aquired in their twilights of their careers giving up 1st round picks and top prospects. and NEVER got a cup.
Signed: Eric Lindros
I cant not mention the trade that brought The older Andrew Raycroft to Toronto for Tuuka Rask
Or Kessel coming to Toronto for Seguin and Dougie Hamilton.
Leafs fans need to be careful what they wish for when just throwing away prospects for older guys who are on the downswing of their careers as Backlund most definitely is.
You still see if on a smaller scale nowadays. Leafs gave up on Mason Marchment who florished into a solid 50-60 pt guy who brings what the leafs actually need , grit. front net prenscense. For a guy called Malgin who barely played for them if he did in a very limited role.
Sean Durzi- A real good offensive defencman they could use about now.
Trevor Moore- Couldnt get into the lineup for the leafs , However now with the kings this season is on pace for 30 goals.
My point is IF youre trading these prospects, You best be getting a guy in return who will be servicable to your organization for years to come a guy like Backlund... wont be.
