He's not, he's including the bonus overages that hit the oilers next season from his contract this season. 3.25 million in overages next year means he actually signed him for league minimum

Just a few things here.

DeBrusk will probably get more than 2 years on his deal, I suspect he will be looking for 5-7 years if he hits the UFA market. I am also hoping for a more drastic change than this, especially if we want to compete come playoff time next year, with McDavid and Draisaitls contracts coming to an end. An upgrade on Ceci would be preferable, and same as Pickard, unless one of Rodrigue, or Ungar impresses, and makes the jump to the NHL.

Not sure I follow. 2 years at 5M is 10M total. 7 years at 5M is 35M total.

I think OP means that if DeBrusk signs a 2yr now and then a 7yr afterwards for the same AAV, he could extend his 'contract' by 2 additional years. I could be mistaken, however, since that carries a lot of risk and assumptions.
