Description
I think Roy and Skjei are cap and/or call-up casualties going into next season. Both could fill high impact roles in AZ on short term deals and are good veterans that can mentor the young defensive players that AZ currently have. Both would fit the system well and AZ has plenty of cap to make the transition to the current state of the AZ franchise worth it.

Kampf is a steady role player and would be a good veteran to help grow guys like Douglas and McBain's games.

Contemplated a 4th as the return. Probably should have done it...

Roy is looking for a long-term pay day, so is Skjei. They both are 29 and want to lock in long deals.

I can see that but overpays for short term deals are appealing to players as well. If there are teams out there that want to do long term for them, so be it. I don't see the value for AZ, need to have spots when the talent in the prospect pool is ready to step into the National.

Leafs would still do it no problem. Kampf is a solid 4th line defensive option but has 0 offensive upside. For his deal (3 years left at 2.4m) he makes sense in certain rebuilding markets but handcuffs the Leafs. His contract being gone would free up anywhere from 1-1.2m to allocate defensively or to bringing back a player like Bertuzzi

I think if I were 29 and just saw the biggest cap jump this is where I tell my agent to get me 7 year deals even if it's lower than a $1 year deal. Guaranteed money is what matters once you are a 30 year old NHLer.

You are thinking the right direction though 2 -shutdown guys for your top-4 will go a long way to competitveness.

AZ offers a 6 at best. They might offer a 5 after the bonus is paid.

Then offer them the overpays you're referring to.

That AAV for Roy is not an overpay. That's what he should be getting on a long-term deal. If you want him to accept a 1-year overpay, you're going to have to offer him close to $7M. On the open market, I think he gets 6 years @ $6M.

You could well be right. I have him as a declining 2nd line stay at home RHD. My valuation for a long-term deal is 4.65MMx6

He likely will decline as he ages, but you still have to pay him for the player he is now. The AFP Analytics projection was 4 years @ $5.6M. Considering that he's a right-hander and that there will be a lot of demand for his services if he makes it to UFA, I think he'll easily get 6 @ $6M.

Hypothetically speaking - if Skjei was going to except $6x3 why in the world would it be with the Coyotes? Canes sign that deal ASAP, and Skjei would find at least 25 other teams who could sign a $6m top 4 dman.
