Description
Let's break down the trades:

CGY: I'd expect Hanifin to get dealt sometime this week. I think Calgary would like to keep him, but I'm sure the calls they're getting are probably too good to pass up. I understand they want to get younger, but I'm not sure they're entirely giving up on a push to the playoffs. Graves isn't "younger" per say, but he's not a rental either. Certainly isn't a replacement for Hanifin, but he's better than something. I think a 4th rounder is fine.

NJD: New Jersey is in a goalie crisis. Lots of wasted potential over there. As a Penguins fan, I'd be lying if I said I didn't love to see it. I'm also not a fan of helping the enemy (teams within the division). But, I think this would be a good opportunity to send out Nedeljkovic. I think Kevin Bahl could really be a good edition to this team. I think this is a fair deal. Both teams fill a hole.

VAN: I think this deal actually could get done. Vancouver gets an experienced playoff performer who is good on both sides of the puck. Pittsburgh gets a younger guy (younger than Smith) that can play in the top six. I understand a lot of Canuck fans want Guentzel, but with Pettersson nearing an extension, it'd be unlikely that they could resign Guentzel. This move gives them a middle six winger, who can play well for them in the playoffs, without losing their best picks and prospects. Good deal for both parties, I'd say.

DAL: The big behemoth. As much as I'd like to just resign Guentzel, I'm just not sure it's in the cards. In this trade, the Penguins get a stud in Maverik Bourque, an up and comer in Christian Kyrou, and a man who needs no introduction, Jani Hakanpaa. Throw in a first rounder too. It's a lot, but I wouldn't consider Guentz a rental for them, as a deal could certainly get done due to the amount of cap space they have next year. I understand Dallas wants to add to their d-core, Ruhwedel isn't an ideal add, but he'd be a great 7th man for them. Both Bourque and Kyrou could really make an impact on this team in the long run. Hakanpaa is more of a rental for our suffering blue line. Not to mention, Pittsburgh gets a first round selection in this year's draft.

I think Pittsburgh improves their defensemen with these deals, for sure. Obviously losing both Smith and Guentzel is going to be a huge hit. I think Mikheyev is a reasonable replacement for Smith, but obviously Guentz's absence is going to leave a huge hole in this forward group. Before Rust's injury, I was really starting to like the Rakell-Crosby-Rust line. They had 11 combined points in their last two games together. Rakell was really starting to look like himself. This line could really start buzzing when Rusty gets back. I think Sully would be stupid to take O'Connor and Puustinen off of Geno's line. I mean those two are dragging Geno into the fight. I love their puck pursuit, keep it going. I'd put Mikheyev on Eller's line with Bemstrom. I really like Bemstrom. Obviously, that goal in his first game was a great first impression. But, I love the way he plays, and think he is a great add for this team. Mikheyev could add some scoring to the bottom six, and I'm fascinated with that line. When Nieto gets back, I'll be excited to see that 4th line back together. I like their play early in the year, and they're incredibly sound defensively.

I think Sullivan putting P.O. with Letang was a good move. I mean the kid lives with him. If P.O. is going to work with anybody, it's going to be Tanger. I've seen some stuff that I really liked from them. P.O. is a great puck mover, and we all know what Tanger can do on the ice. Keep them together, Sully. Let's see what happens. The Swedish pairing is very good. Pettersson is this team's best all around defensman. Karlsson is this team's best offensive defenseman. I wouldn't touch this pair whatsoever. Bahl and Hakanpaa is going to be a work in progress, but they're certainly an upgrade over Graves and Ruhwedel.

Let me know what you guys think in the comments!

That Canucks deal is awful for the penguins.

I don't think the Devils are going to be buyers at this point.

No chance CGY takes Graves unless you pay.

Not sure Graves or Conroy would be interested but Dubas should do that if he can. Graves will probably fit much better in a different system. Terrible signing by Dubas as Sullivan clearly does not like him at all.

Rather just trade Ned for a pick.

Hate the VAN trade. Hope Dubas doesn't do that and Smith might block it too. Need more value to take on another risky middle six winger contract. The market for those type of players is very weak in recent years.

Would be content with DAL trade, but guessing even in a sign and trade Nill won't give up that much.

sully always has personality conficts with players, he's a prick, which is why he lost the locker room long ago.

the penguins aren't moving Graves for a 4th and he isn't the problem on the team. The defense on the team has been fine most of the year. The biggest issue on defense has been the 3r pairing which bleeds goals. And the complete lack of scoring. Mainly by the lower lines, both by idiot design (dubas) and the failure of the power play (sully and rest of coaching staff).
People hating on Graves are the same people who blamed Dumo, who is having a decent year in SEA.
They are clueless.

I won't go so far as to say he lost the room. I think the team still plays hard for him. However the inability to make the power play work with quite a few elite even strength Point producers is not acceptable.

Graves has been terrible dude. I still think he's a decent hockey player and I'm not a fan of trading him at his lowest value, but he literally looks lost out there. And i was a fan of the signing. Even just simple things he looks either incapable of doing or ignorant of what to do. He floats away towards the net while the opponent is cycling in our end and loses his guy in the middle of the ice. He flubs clearances or turns it over in our d zone. I think he's looked atrocious tbh...

Wasn't there a source that Reilly Smith is fed up with his name as a trade rumor?

Graves has looked, performed, and is paid, like an average 2nd pairing NHL defensemen.
His oiGF vs oiGA is a +3 at even strength with a PDO at 100.1 so it's not inflated. WTF do you want from the man?
You act like he was brought in here as a 1LD. He's not a 1LD and he was never going to be a 1LD, and he isn't paid like a 1LD either! Stop pretending you get to find a 1LD on the market at 2LD prices.
They win when he's on the ice. He doesn't put up points....who cares, that's not his job. EK an Letang are the puck movers, and the ones who are suppose to produce the spark from the backend. The pucks not suppose to, nor is the system designed to be on Graves stick.
His Corsi and FW are both roughly 50%. average while getting 58% of his starts in the D zone.
You say he turns the puck over, he's got 30 5v5 give aways all year, and 15 take aways. That's not some horrible stat.
In all situations it's 33 and 19...
That doesn't say he turns the puck over all over the place having a .5 turnover rate is actually pretty damn good.
You just have a very bias opinion of the guy and proceed to spew out garbage comments on him.
His play is absolutely fine.
Meanwhile you can look at the entire 3rd pairing and they bleed goals on the ice. Because they are a bunch of AHL level players pretending to be NHL competent.
You would rather sit around saying nothing about guys like Chad, R. POJ, Shea etc.
Look at POJ who they keep throwing on the ice, he plays 8 minutes less per night, gets no PK tine, bleeds goals and turns the puck over more. If you don't believe me take their turnovers, divide by the minutes on the ice. Remember that Graves has 120 minutes of PK to POJ 13 total on the season.

Graves has played well for what he is. An average 2nd pairing guy.

So if "Graves has been terrible dude".... well a lot of teams must have terrible 2nd pairing guys too because most of them are getting roughly the same level of play out of their 2nd pairing guys.
On top of it, what does that make the whole rotating cast of AHL defenseman the penguins have been playing in those 3rd pairing roles who keep getting switched around into positions they have no business in to hide them.
Hell almost every other team in the league manages to put their 3rd pairing in the PK.... but the penguins can't do that because their 3rd pairing is so damn bad.

We'd take a shot on Ned for a 3rd. Bahl only on the table with a dman coming back (Graves retained or Pettersson)

Ned it is.

Pettersson isn't going anywhere and the penguins aren't going to retain on anyone with term.
