<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>whats the point on retaining on Smith just to sign Debrusk. They are the same player.
That's way to much for Roslovic, he's not that good. If he was CBJ wouldn't have let him go.
CAR won't be playing for the cup, just give that up.</div></div>
Reasons why I stand by trading Smith, and signing DeBrusk:
1. Smith is 33, DeBrusk is 27 (28 in October)
2. Smith doesn't like playing here (I don't care what he says. Watch him play, it's obvious.)
3. DeBrusk has untapped potential (Hasn't played with the best centermen this year, yet has 4 goals, 6 points in 8 playoff games)
4. Smith is not effective in Pittsburgh's top-six (His best hockey was played on third line, He's too expensive for a third liner.)
5. Smith is at 50% retained has positive value, take advantage of it.
6. We can afford it, this doesn't ruin our cap space.

I think the hard part is finding a team he'd like to go to that has a third this year they'd be willing to give up. Nashville was a team that came to mind, but I'm sure there might be a handful of others.

That's an awfully expensive blue line. I don't think the Penguins are looking to give up top picks for a guy like Chychrun. He's great, don't get me wrong, but if they were to trade away those draft choices at all, it'd be for a much larger fish.

Moving Jarry's contract would certainly free up some room to sign another top-six guy. But the more vets you add, the less room for young guys. Dubas' goal is to get some youth in the lineup while keeping the core intact. I also believe that moving on from Jarry would be a mistake. I think running a Nedeljkovic-Blomqvist could turn ugly. Both are fine goaltenders, but one is a rookie and the either has been a backup for years. Dubas also seems too "proud" (if that's even the right word) to reverse a decision he made just a year ago. I think the Smith trade is one thing. But for those who are interested in trading away Smith, Graves, Jarry, Eller, Acciari and others, it's just so unlikely.

I think this is pretty close. I'm not sure that P.O. is worth $1.8m. I'd expect something in the $1.25m - $1.5m range. I like DeBrusk more than most. If he were to play with Sid, I think 30 goals wouldn't be impossible. Putting Poulin at the 4LW spot would be a disservice to him. I'd try moving him to 3C, dropping Eller to 4C, and sliding Ponomarev to 4LW. That 4th line becomes a shutdown line that Sully could deploy in defensive zone situations. I like Puusty, but I like the Bunting-Malkin-Rakell line more. An O'Connor-Poulin-Puustinen line would be a lot of fun. I think this would be a much different look for the bottom six, despite most of the same faces reappearing. I also think scratching Yager would be a waste. No matter where he plays, he just needs to play. So if it's not with this team, send him down to AHL, or he can go back to the WHL.
I like how you left some space for a potential splash deal at the deadline. Lots to work with here, good work.

Taking risky moves that burden the team down with cap, the year Crosby is trying to sign a contract extension is not a wise move.
This team has to make level headed decisions. Not show Crosby his career is done and buried here.</div></div>
I know it's a risky move, but the potential is there. It's a tough contract, but there aren't many guys available who can put up numbers like Skinner. Tarasenko could be an option, but he might prefer to stay in Florida, and his injury history is daunting. Stamkos likely resigns in Tampa. Reinhart is a righty and usually plays center and might ask for a 6+ year deal. All of those options wouldn't come with some sort of compensation either. I think sticking guys like DeBrusk, Mantha, Stephenson, Teravainen, Duclair, would be a severe mistake. If we're interested in still winning, take the risk, it just might be worth it.

I just think we'd be better off keeping Eller. I believe he and Copp put up similar numbers this year. I don't think Copp's age compensates for that contract of his.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>they could have moved smith this year if they were willing to retain....they weren't.
Don't see how that changes until next TDL.
They also aren't moving Graves. 5v5 Ice time vs goals bled he is miles ahead of every other defender they have. It's also really hard to see this team drop another 6 million on their Defense. They do need a legit 1LD though but I'm not sure Skjei is that guy. Looks like another attempt to put a 2LD in a 1LD spot but over paying to do it. Lot of money to do that here.</div></div>
I think Dubas is more willing to swallow $2,500,000 on Smith's contract for only a year, as opposed to a year and a half. I also think he recognized if he were to get rid of both Guentzel and Smith it would have entirely blown out the LW spot in the top 6, and significantly decreased their playoff chances. It's possible Dubas thought getting rid of Guentzel would increase Smith's role and in turn ramp up his production.
To be honest, Pettersson/Karlsson seems to be the top pairing. If you want my opinion, Letang maintains the "top pairing" role because of his history with the team. But it's evident that his and Karl's ice time is nearly identical, and Pettersson's ice time is significantly greater than Joseph's. So, adding Skjei doesn't necessarily mean he and Letang will be the top pairing. All and all, the role of "top pairing" is insignificant in this scenario.

Let alone give him 4 years term on it.
Or pay someone 7mil per to play 3C.... no one is paying a 3C 7mil per.</div></div>
The Penguins are lacking a player who can play up in the top six for an extended period due to injuries. They've been pretty healthy all year, but when Rusty was hurt, having a guy like Lindholm on Sid's wing would've been incredible. This team is going to continue to get older, and injuries will occur more frequently. Obviously a guy like Stephenson is another good option, but I think Lindholm could be a game changer. When I think of expensive third-liners, I think of Phil Kessel. I think he was getting around $8m in his time here. Bottom six scoring is huge, if you can improve it, do it.

I believe the cost is lower now than it was before. We see the issues particularly with him and Perry. It's an emotional game, I get it. Arguments happen. But, I think the Oilers are ready to move on from Kane especially if he ends up not being a significant contributing factor in the playoffs. Smith is a very smart player who would work well with McDavid or Draisaitl. Penguins are in need of some grit and size. Kane brings that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boltsbeathabs</b></div><div>That's not close to getting you Perbix.</div></div>
I understand the argument. Perbix is younger and could be considered more valuable. The reason I built the trade was because I find it very unlikely Tampa can resign both Stammer and Duke. You can give Stamkos a paycut, but Duclair deserves a raise. Tampa can't afford both. Most lightning fans have Perbix as a healthy scratch. Kudos for the deep roster. But I think you are overvaluing a guy that's been used as a healthy scratch (despite his good play) and underestimating the difficulty of resigning both Duke and Stammer.

I understand the urge to send off Graves. I get it. GM's get it wrong sometimes, but I think it'd be in the Penguins best interest to hold onto to him for another year. But if we were to send him off, I don't think Dubas would want to retain anything on that contract.

Just because you don't want Hoglander in play, doesn't mean he isn't in play. You may still be getting used to GMJR, but as a Penguins fan, I can tell you from experience that he is willing to ignore popular opinion in order to get a guy he wants. It led him to two Stanley Cups. His methods are unorthodox, but he has vision like no other. If I were a Canucks fan, I wouldn't want to lose Hoglander either. But to claim a guy is not in play, no matter who reported it, is ridiculous. We'll know who's not in play after the trade occurs.

The notion that Rittich holds way more value than Alex Nedeljkovic is preposterous. I guarantee a team would be willing to pay a second round pick for Ned. I acknowledge that it will probably not be the Kings. But there is no chance in hell David Rittich is more valueable than Alex Nedeljkovic.

I didn't say this deal had to be done with the Kings. I chose the Kings because I know Rittich could play for us without much of a drop off from Ned and they had a 2nd rd pick in 2025, a spot which is vacant for the Penguins.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pens1991</b></div><div>Agree with all of this and wrote something sort of similar earlier.
Injuries are brutal right now. Rakell going down hurt the second line, and rust going down obviously hurts. Everything for the most part outside the PP has been very good this year (goalies are playing out of their mind).
I'd love to find a way to make the 4th Nieot/Acciari/Hinistroza (they only played small minutes together but solid results (net xgoals vs goals against)
The metro is also strange... Isles and flyers in playoff spots? No one had that on their bingo cards and I'd expect both to regress.
Think a lot of fans (and Toronto..) are trying to really throw Dubas under the bus, but think he did the best he could. He can't anticipate injuries and surely couldn't anticipate the PP being THIS bad.</div></div>
I agree. Injuries have really affected this team. They're an aspect of the game, there's no doubt about it, but when a team is struggling to consistently score every night, injuries can be detrimental. On the positive side, it gives younger guys a chance to prove themselves with a team. I think we've missed that in the forward group, but defensively, Shea and Ludvig have really stood out to me.
I liked the Nieto-Acciari-Hinostroza line as well. We may be able to see some more of it, but if everyone is back and healthy, I don't think it'd be realistic to see those guys together very much, if at all. I think Carter ultimately will have the upper hand on that line, and I'm not sure if Hinostroza has a roster spot over a guy like Puljujarvi or Zohorna, but only time will tell. The cap is gonna get tight.
In regards to standings, I think we're gonna see some things settle down before Christmas. I don't think Philadelphia and New York are playoff teams, nor do I think the Penguins should be out of the playoffs. There's a couple teams around the league that are playing much different than their final record will show, whether that be good or bad. I'm not worried about standings yet, but winning divisional games are still very important.
Lastly, Dubas deserves a lot of credit for his actions this offseason. Toronto fans are gonna follow this team like the plague, it's just the way the cookie crumbles. But besides all of the noise surrounding this team, I think Dubas will weather the storm well, and the Penguins will be in good hands.

It's hard to say, especially after double hip surgery. I'm not too familiar with his game, but from watching him play the Penguins the past few years, I've seen some attributes I like. He's a tenacious player, brings good size, and is more than capable on the forecheck. He obviously has some consistency issues scoring wise, but he's proven to be able to put up 12-15 goals in a season. One of the biggest things for me is that he's a right shot. On a team full of lefty's, righty's are hard to come by. We've seen a lot of lefty's play on the right side this year. It has its advantages, but the more righty's, the better in the Penguins' case. He actually reminds me of Drew O'Connor a lot. Both of those guys certainly still have some room to grow, even at their age, but there's still a lot of hockey left.
To answer you question though, I think he has just a good a shot as anyone else really to help this team win games.
