I agree with you that the 3rd Metro team in the playoffs might not be good, but the Capitals should be worse than their record and their record isn't very good. I hope they go all in just to see them crash and burn but the -33 goal differential (27th in league) is indicative of how weak they are.

Alexeyev looks closer to being a bust than an NHL player. The pick would be a nice start for Calgary but Washington really shouldn't be a buyer now so they should hang onto it.

If you can get a first for Dowd, Lindgren, or Mantha then I totally get it but if not, I would rather try to make a run. At best that 25 2nd becomes a solid contributor in 4-5 years, right when they in all likelihood will be completely bottoming out.

Look at every team that's undergone a real, full rebuild over the past 15 or so years and actually came out ahead on the other side. Years of being a bottom 5 team, multiple top 5 picks to get out of it. We're not getting there with returns for those three guys. I would much rather actually enjoy watching games for the rest of this year (very possibly the last one of Ovi's career in which they even have a chance at the playoffs!) than sit through another two months of games that don't care because it's "optimal" to do so.

And for the "they'll just get crushed in the first round by FLA or CAR or NYR":
1. who cares
2. that was the overwhelming consensus two years ago against FLA and they should have won that series 4-1

That's why I said AA was a throw in. The comps for Hanifin are Hronek, Orlov, and H Lindholm -- that Caps pick is almost guaranteed to be #17 at worst, could very easily be as high as #7 -- that's pretty much exactly what the Hronek deal was, and I would say pretty comparable to the at the time of the trade 28-32oa + late 2nd that Orlov got or the 20-32oa + late 2nd that Lindholm got. Sure add on the conditional 3rd or whatever, but I don't see Hanifin getting anything significantly more than this.

Because that is a good indicator of a team that has any potential at all in being competitive in the postseason. Name the stat WSH looks strong in. They seem like a below average team fortunate to even be close to the playoffs. And I certainly don't think PIT looks good either but they have some strengths.
