I’ll preface by saying I don’t think this will happen. I don’t think the timing is right for either team. But if it were to happen, I could see the path looking something like this.

I’ve seen some Avs fans here say they can’t afford Mittelstadt, which is partially true. They would have to make some tough roster decisions over the next couple of years, just like any competitive/capped-out team making a significant addition.

Colorado
Pros: Colorado solves their 2C problem long term. I thibk he would fit well with the Avs, and I think the production is for real.
Cons; They’re giving up significant trade assets, paying out a large extension, and eventually moving out another key piece to make it all work. They probably have to overpay in the trade to pry Mittelstadt out of Buffalo and dump Johansen at TDL.

Buffalo
Pros: They take advantage of a hot sellers market for centers, accumulating assets to improve their team in the offseason. Malinski could play for them right away. Johansen is a cap dump, but could contribute as a bet in their bottom six next year with Okposo and Girgensons expiring.
Cons: They deal one of their more valuable assets without addressing one of their biggest needs - right defense. There’s no rush to trade him now, and could be more suitors in the off-season (IF they don’t resign him).
