I don't know how someone can't grasp that Tanev is exactly what the Leafs need.

The Leafs need to reduce scoring chances, limit shots on goal, and improve their PK. Tanev would not only do all that for the Leaf, he'd do it slotting in next to Reilly, who has been on the ice for more ES goals against than any other defenseman on a playoff team. Tanev makes everyone he plays with better, Reilly would be a beast next to Tanev.

He's turning 34, is a rental and isn't what he used to be. Also Calgary is letting in more goals over the past couple of months. Their "incredible" defence isn't so incredible. If the leafs move their 1st they should get someone with term.

Tanev isn't the reason Calgary gives up more goals, he's been on the ice for considerably fewer ES goals than anyone else in their top 4, and if yoou honestly believe he "isn't what he used to be", you haven't actually watched him play, he hasn't fallen off at all.

So...it's a weak draft...and a late first shouldn't be take as similar value to, say, a late first last year.

Do I want to give up a first for Tanev? No. But I can see it happening. This package is too rich...but maybe Tanev + some depth piece.

Or something like a 1st + 4th + ahl player for Tanev + 3rd

Hopefully treliving has a solid understanding of what Tanev wants on an extension...if that's not something he wants to commit to, I don't think he should give up a first for a rental.

I think everyone gets hung up on rookie fever even though this draft isn't supposed to be nearly as deep as last year. Tanev is worth the late 1st, especially retained.

Flames should add a bottom 6 forward (Rooney, Duehr, etc) and Leafs should remove the 3rd and 5th

The ask for him is a 2nd. The leafs would be stupid to overpay on a soon to be 34 year old rental. Better options are available

If something between the 2 teams happens, I suspect it will be Tanev @ 50% for a 1st and a small amount of cap (around 1m), which may be Timmins as his salary fits and Tanev would push him further down in the depth chart.

Where do you get the ask is a 2nd? It's been rumored for a while that the Canucks offered a 2nd and a prospect to add Tanev to the Lindholm deal but the Flames held off hoping to get a 1st

All I have seen is the ask is a 2nd and the leafs don't have one so they would have to give up their 1st. Which Treliving doesn't want to do for a rental. I hope that is the case because Tanev doesn't put TO over the top and does nothing for the team moving forward. Hanafin would be a much better target.
