I’m no expert, but if GM’s don’t value him high, it probably means you’re over valuing him. Be realistic, if Kakko was putting up these on a team like the Ducks Sharks or Blackhawks, Rangers fans would be screaming that Kakko is not a good player.
And if you want “stats” Kakko’s offensive rating with percentile is -2.2 and Vatrano’s offensive rating with percentile is +4.3. So no, they are not as close as you think.
Kakko, while decent in a defensive category, is not worth as much as all you Rangers fans think because he’s lack of offensive brings his value down.
Few things here...
- NYR are 26-7-2 with Kakko in the lineup. They are 11-9-1 without him in the lineup. Yet everyone says he has little to no impact.
-He has 7 points in his past 9 games since being put on a line with Brod & Cuylle. That's all at evens too.
-Vatrano is shooting over 4% higher than his career average. Some regression is bound to happen.
-16 of his 45 points are on the PP, where his minutes would greatly reduce after a trade to NYR
-Vatrano is at 2.0 p/60 at even strength, kakko is at 1.6 p/60.
Basically, the above is not worth a 1st rounder, or giving up kakko's defensive impact / upside (as we know Vatrano is at his best rn).
