If you think thats an overpay then you don't know JEE's game. JEE is putting up more points, with a worse roster, with better defense, on one of the most team friendly deals in the league, and is only 2 years older. Necas is a great player, but this doesn't get JEE out of Minnesota.

Like I mentioned in my other comment, JEE is on pace for more points, WAY better defense (he is a perennial selke top 5-6), on a worse roster, with an insanely team friendly deal and is only 2 years older. The athletic estimates Necas' value at 3.1 million. They estimate JEE's value at 9.3 million.

Better offensively that’s for sure. This is the only season JEE has been better there. And Necas has 7 goals in as many games since coming back from injury, so even that might not hold up. Ek is higher valued because he’s a center, but the difference between them isn’t a first and second. Canes have more than enough forwards that are good defensively.

JEE is on pace for more points, is one of the top defensive forwards in the league, and is on one of the most team friendly deals in the league (estimated surplus value of almost 4 million) for the next 6 years. Necas is good, don't get me wrong, but the value of JEE outweighs Necas substantially right now.

The contract is a huuuuuge part of that, JEE should be making way more but isn't. Necas is gonna have to get paid after this year.
