Description
Let this team workout kinks in the final big time dead cap season, then make the big moves. Sign a solid top 6 forward(ETA longer term as suggested), keep Dewar/Duhaime 4th line chemistry. Merrill should be gone but I'm lazy.

Idk if you can plan on Spurgeon being LTIR'd all year, so his $$ is gonna throw a wrench into your plan.

I think Teravainen will want more term anyway - entering his 30 YO season, probably his last chance to get a nice payday.

Honestly, I'd personally dump Spurgeon, but I'm not aware of the details of the M-NTC, ( I'm still learning all of this GM stuff so I'm not even sure on how we could pull a complex trade that's advantageous to the team and the cap) then I'd probably give the "C" to Zuccarello. Spurgeon is solid, but so is the rest of our defense and all things considered the talent is there without Spurgeon, just some kinks to iron out.

Also wouldn't be opposed to giving Teravinen a longer term. I think it would be worth it.

I wish we could dump him, but who is going to take an oft-injured 34 year old who has three years left at 7.5M?

Cap will definitely go up next year, early rumblings are $4m. We'll see though.

They're likely stuck with Spurgeon as has already been said, so I wouldn't expect to just put him on LTIR to get rid of his full cap.

There isn't much actual salary savings either, so it his deal doesn't remotely become good for a team just wanting to hit the floor until the final year where he makes less cash than his cap hit.

I think it would really depend on term/cost on Teravainen for me. He's a good skater, so his aging curve doesn't necessarily worry me as much as other 30 YOs, but I'd just want to make sure I'm not paying for his 25-27 YO production. Cause he's dropped from like 0.8 P/GP to 0.5 P/GP in a matter of a year or two.

Spurgeon I don't think is moveable, unfortunately. Probably gotta just hope he heals up and can bang out another year or two of solid defending at ~65ish (?) games a year.

Agreed on Spurgeon, hopefully he can remain healthy. Also agree on striking the balance with Teravainen, Curious on what would you offer him? I'd say what he lacks in his P/PG recently he makes up for in special teams - and he's certainly a two-way forward. Areas where I think MN could use some more consistency. I think he'd bring some more life to the PK.

Yeah I agree he's a good player and do think another top-6 goal scorer is a vacancy on this team right now. I don't really have a problem with what you offered here, but I just dont' think it gets it done.

Nyquist signed at age 29 for 4x5.5M
Henrique signed at 29 for 5x5.825M
Zuccarello was 31 for his 5x6M
Schwartz 29 5x5.5M

Not sure that those are perfect comps, but you get the idea. I don't see a reason why Tuevo couldn't get that from some GM somewhere. And with the cap rising, it could go north of 6.

Guess it just comes down to your comfort level in giving term to a guy like him. I think there's worse fits out there, but I'm not super enthused if the floor is something like 5x6M.
