Just don't think Marner is a good fit for Montreal. And before I hear "wHO DoSeN'T WaNt A HuNDrED PoINt PlAYEr?" I mean that he costs too much from a rebuilding teams perspective (The offer above is still a little short imo), he's not a playoff performer he just doesn't have that grit, and at 8th Overall Montreal can get a really good core piece for the future.

If the Leafs entertain the idea of trading Marner they will want a top Right handed defenseman that will help them right away. Leafs are looking to maximize their opportunity with this core. Make no sense for them to get picks that will help them in 2-3-4 years.

Team situations aside, that's a pretty good offer.

I'm curious, I've always been a fan of Struble and with Montreal's absolute glut of young LD's (Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj, Hutson, Struble, Norlinder), do you think there could be a potential prospect swap there?

I know such a move is unlikely between divisional rivals, but it's all hypothetical.

Where did the "he's not a playoff performer" narrative come from? The Leafs are bad in the playoffs, true, but Marner has put up good points his last few playoffs:

14 points in 11 games
8 points in 7 games

Seems like a superstar delivering in the playoffs to me...

I had originally offered Barron in place of the Calgary pick, but was asked to swap it by a Leafs fan. Do you think swapping the Calgary pick for Barron helps to get it done?

IMO the Habs have to trade a few LD or start losing them for nothing.

I doubt they want to trade Matheson or Guhle. That means there is 1 spot open for Struble, Harris, Xhekaj, Hutson, Engstrom, Trudeau

Even if 1 is the 7th D, 1 moves over to the right, and 1 doesn't work out, it's still way too many NHL defenders over the next 2 years.

It's less so the stat's and the overall strength of play that gives him that reputation. Even Matthews come playoff time is willing to throw the body, take a hit. Playoff's comes down to players who put their bodies on the line for the team, Tkachuk for example last year with the broken sternum, played through it until he physically couldn't anymore, I hate the Tkachucks but respect. Nylander a few years ago had a really ****y play during playoffs, was lazy chasing down a puck that would've been icing if he had put the effort in. He's a really talented player but that one weak play in a close game infuriated all my leafs fans friends for months afterward.
Marner panics, he's a little soft, purely on points he's had more bad playoffs than good ones. So yeah imo he hasn't figured out how to play postseason YET.

That's a bit of a reach. I would take a PPG playoff performer and let other guys take the body. He's actually the best of the big 4 on the PK so he brings other intangibles besides scoring.

Toronto has had a cultural issue in the playoffs as the top 6 and top 4 have been too soft. But the Habs have different problems and different needs.

I just don’t think Mtl have a players that would interest Toronto. If Matheson was a righty maybe there would be something to built on but even Barron wouldn’t be enough. I like him a lot but Marner is a Elite players despite all the hate he get from Toronto fan. I would take him in my team any time.

I mean... On the RHD we have Reinbacher, Mailloux, Barron, Savard, Kovacevic, Konyushkov.

In there you literally have every single prototypical type of NHL defenseman. None of those are remotely interesting to Toronto?

The problem is most of them will get to their prime in 3-4-5 years so Matthews and company will already be on the 30’s side. Savard and Kovacevic are fine defenseman but not what you are looking for a top defenseman. Maybe Matheson would be ok. They are so bad right now at defense that they could definitely use another big minutes defenseman who play a high pace game that would suit maple leafs forward.
