The Monahan deal/destination/return was probably agreed before the start of the year. The Monahan signing and the Johansen trade were just days apart in June. Just saying…

A bit petty but I understand the sentiment.

Some Avs fans always trash Habs players... Lehkonen was a 4th liner...Drouin was overrated and didn't fit their system... and now they say the exact same about Monahan.

Can't wait to trade him there for a conditionnal 1st and see him have success as expected.

Well, it turns out the Avs actually couldn't use Tatar. Hence why he's in Seattle now.

In terms of Drouin, it's a lot different to add a guy in the offseason at close to league min than to acquire him at a TDL and pay him 3M or so. One is essentially no risk, while the other has some serious opportunity cost.

That aside, I think this is a fair ask on Monahan. But on the topic of redundancy, I feel like having him and Johansen is that. If the team can move RyJo, then maybe this is palatable. If not, then I don't think there is really a place for Monahan on the team.

Moving Tatar to make room for Monahan? And my point is that the Avs seem to look at former Habs more than any other team. Which includes Tatar. And can you really blame them? Patrick Roy caused a lot of people over there to have “multiple Stanley cup rings in their ears blocking out the noise of the haters…” to reference his comment to Roenick.

Re: Monahan specifically, centers have far more overall value and scarcity value than wingers regardless. And Monahan can easily play the wing, and multiple other roles, Including different positions on the PP, and he’s one of the best face off guys in the league. So he can even have a decent role on the PK if you needed him to. Teams need depth at center for long cup runs. Not sure where you’re getting $3m from though, Monahan’s at $1.985mm and could also be traded at half salary as well to up the return, then he costs less than $1mm on an annualized figure, and a fraction of that with 1/4 of the season remaining at the TDL.

If you mean Drouin last year at the deadline, I agree. But I don’t think anyone was advocating for the Avs trading for Drouin at the deadline, exactly because of his salary. The fact that Monahan fits the cap so well, is exactly why he’s an ideal fit to add to the team’s overall depth.

3M is in the Drouin paragraph and refers to what he would have cost against the cap if acquired via trade last year.

I like Monahan. It's just really hard to see where he fits. RyJo is struggling to fill the 2C role, which is partially due to his lack of speed. It's pretty easy to have hesitations on Monahan as a result. And having both seems especially troubling. If you would take RyJo back in the trade, I'm in. If not, I don't see it.

Interesting. What would you add to the return for the cap dump? Change the 2026 second to a late 2024 1st to get the Habs to take on his $4mm next year?
Plus it frees up $2m in annualized cap space this year to add elsewhere, after already upgrading at C.

Where does this "Avs can't use Drouin" sentiment come from? The deadline last year? I've seen this topic a couple times and haven't understood it yet. I haven't seen Avs fans overly disappointed in Drouin, especially considering his cap hit and the risk involved in it.

Tough to say without knowing if there are other teams that might take him. Not a ton though. He's been useful, and a buyout isn't super costly if absolutely necessary.

If you hold me to it, maybe a 3rd or equivalent prospect.

I agree with your point on the buyout. So the question along those lines is what is $2.667mm in cap space spread over the next two years worth in return? Historically just that alone is worth a 2nd. When factoring in the added cap space this year, when competing for a cup, and the value of also getting a better player as part of the return? A late first round pick isn’t an excessive ask by any stretch.

I'd have to be convinced that Monahan would be enough of an upgrade on Johansen, and I don't think I am. A 2nd and 3rd is something I might do. A 1st is probably a no unless there is a crazy condition in place that ensures both Monahan and the team perform. Just my opinion here.

Fair. But if that’s the case, I suggest you keep both. Play Johansen on the wing. Monahan 58% face off percentage as a lefty, Johansen 55% as a righty. Keep your 1st rounder, and leave it as a 2nd. You still have $5mm left in LTIR space right now, and further injuries are inevitable.

I think no matter what team monahan gets traded to, if it is indeed a first coming back it will have conditions. Like it is a first if the avs make the conference finals and Monahan plays at least 50% of games in the playoffs.
