Everyone overvalues their teams players...
CBJ paid a mid-1st and 2nd for Provorov 4.725M, 3 years remaining (UFA)
VAN paid a mid-1st and 2nd for Hronek 4.4M, 2 years remaining (RFA)
OTT paid a mid-1st, mid-2nd, and 2026 2nd for Chychrun 4.6M, 3 years remaining (UFA)
LAK paid a late-1st and 3rd for Gavrikov 2.8M rental (UFA)
BOS paid a very late-1st, and two very late 2nds for Lindholm 2.6M rental (UFA)
An offer of a mid-1st, 3rd, and 4th is pretty fair for Pettersson 4.025M with 2 years remaining
Maybe. Let's look at the data for the guys in the year they were traded.
Provorov:
Points per 60: 0.70
Goal% with most common pair: 39.5% (54th in NHL)
Corsi: 47%
Hronek (before trade):
Points per 60: 0.89
Goal% with most common pair: 54.4% (24th in NHL)
Corsi: 46%
Chychrun
Points per 60: 1.44
Goal% with most common pair: 59.6% (12th in NHL)
Corsi: 51%
Gavrikov
Points per 60: 0.61
Goal% with most common pair: 43.4% (49th in NHL)
Corsi: 48%
Lindholm:
Points per 60: 0.71
Goal% with most common pair: 46.5% (40th in NHL)
Corsi: 50%
Now let's look at
Pettersson:
Points per 60: 0.91
Goal% with most common pair: 70.3% (1st in NHL)
Corsi: 52%
So Pettersson has been better at scoring points than everyone but Chychrun, has a better Corsi and a better %goals on the ice than every other example you named. And you made him worth less than all of them.
Pettersson is worth a mid 1st and an A prospect. If the Pens are still even remotely in it, the price will be higher than that even. Retention adds even more.
The best comp is Chychrun and he was traded for: a 1st (12th overall), a conditional 1st (that turned into a 2nd), and another 2nd. And most pundits agreed it was an underpay.
