Kraken trade is VERY pricey for #4 RHD the Devils don’t really need.
Ducks trade kinda similar, very rich return for the Ducks when all they give up is a rental 3C piece and a terribly overpriced goalie that’s been underperforming his expectations and cap hit 4 out of the last 5 season by now.

Seriously hoping Devils don’t go anywhere near these trades.

Marcus Pettersson >> Larsson at that price

I don't think either side does the Ducks trade

Ducks don't sniff that trade, what value add are we getting for downgrading to Vanacek, let alone retaining?

The value is getting 5 mill off your books when gibson is 34 and washed and you're finally ready to compete

So Anaheim is supposed to take a garbage trade now to make their cap look better in four seasons? That's the dumbest thing I've seen on this site for a while.

This dude d**k rides Gibson trades hard man

Expects us to hang onto 50% of his cap and give up our 1st rounder to “dump” him

But he’s getting a new starting goalie so it’s the good ol CF Special — your guys sucks but he’s going to be our starter // 1C // top 2 defenseman

Gibson has a bad contract. It's only going to get worse as he ages and gets more miles on him.

Best case scenario he's an average starter in 4 years.
Worst case scenario he's barely NHL quality and you're stuck with that 6.4 mill when trying to compete again.

At 1.4 mill retention, I'd make it simple and offer Vanacek and a 2nd.

5 mill would be what he probably gets as a UFA, and you get a 2nd to take vanacek off our hands for the next 2 years.

Seems like you don't fully grasp what the Ducks are getting with the rest of OPs suggested trade.
Filmon is a pretty solid forward prospect but Vilén is the real price for the Ducks in this deal (other than getting out from the rest of Gibson's rather awful contract).
Vilén's an absolute baller, if he keeps his progression up the Devils will have a straight in-house replacement for Marino available to them in a couple of years.

Gibson at 6.4=cap dump
Gibson at 5 mill=0 value
Gibson at 4 mill: 1st+Vanacek+Prospect
Gibson at 3.2 mill: 1st+2nd+Vanacek+Prospect

Gibson is a short term solution, the plan would still be to have Schmid be the starter long term, and Gibson as the 1B.

Like if I went to Minnesota and offered 2 1sts+Vanacek for Gustafsson they'd say yes in a heart beat.

He costs 2.75 mill less than Gibson, is younger, and is better.
If I offered a 1st+Prospect I could certainly get Ullmark out of boston
It wouldn't take much at all to get Markstrom out of Calgary if anything
How much do you think I'd have to pay to get Jarry out of pittsburgh? 1 mill cheaper than gibson, younger, and better
If I offered a 1st+ for Logan thompson I'd probably get a yes from vegas. He costs 6 mill less than gibson, is younger and better.

You should go do any one of those things then. I'm perfectly fine keeping Gibson in Anaheim eating a million pucks while the players in front of him figure it out. I'll worry about his four-years-from-now cap hit in four years when it matters.

I would much rather do any of those things. All would be top of the market payments

Cory Schneider, who was a top 5 goalie at the time, was traded for the 9th overall pick. And goalie values have come DOWN

Look at the contracts Sorokin and Helle got.

Lot less than what Vasy, price, and Bobrovsky did in the past.

I've enjoyed watching the first 452 games of Gibson's career. There's no reason to think I won't enjoy the next 120-180.

Seems like you don't fully grasp how little the Ducks are getting out of OP's deal. The main piece is a LHD? We have the best LHD pipeline in the league. Vilen would be third pairing on our AHL team behind Zellweger and Hinds, whom are both superior prospects. Then there's a winger who's NHL upside is what, 3rd line on a competitive team if he works out?

All to get out of an "awful" contract that we are more than willing to see through to the end, at age 34, when goalies are regularly playing well into their mid 30s. Then we get the guy with the leagues second worst GSAX to boot. If we wanted a struggling goalie, we would have claimed Raanta or Campbell off waivers.

Y'all really need to get off this "Gibson is a cap dump train", you're the only ones believing it, and it's getting to be a real tired argument.

John Gibson makes top 3 money this year and will make top 7 money over the life of his deal.

Gibson is a 30 year old goalie with mediocre/below average numbers for the last 4 years.

I can acknowledge Vanacek as a cap dump because he's a 2 million dollar goalie making 3.4 mill
Gibson is a 5 million dollar goalie making 6.4 mill. Making him also a cap dump at full price.

Only 35% of starts this year have been made by goalies who will be 30 by the January 31st. 25% by goalies who will be 31 or older.15% by goalies who are age 33 or older

Of the 39 goalies who have at least 13 starts, just 10 of them are 30 years or older.

Just 5 of them are older than 31.

Which of these goalies have succeeded into their 30s?

Goalies don't age well.

Here's a list of goalies older than 31 over the past 5 years that have been able to
A) handle a workload (1000 shot attempts against or about 30 games)
B) Have 15 or more GSAx

20-21 Marc Andre Fleury. That's the list
Just 6 seasons above 10.
Just 17 seasons above 5
Just 30 seasons even in the positives.

Meanwhile for younger goalies:
23 seasons above 15
34 seasons above 10
54 seasons above 5
81 seasons in the +ves

Last year:

Of the top 15 goalies in GSAx. Every single one was in their 20s.
Of the top 28: 25 were in their 20s.
