Why on Earth would you trade Petterson? He and Karlsson are literally the best defensive pairing in the NHL so far this year.

I don't advocate trading him but he is a top pair LHD on an extremely team friendly contract.

I'm not saying they should trade him, but if you get to the deadline this year and the pens aren't going to playoffs, you sell what you can to help the rebuild.

Rangers aren’t trading Cuylle. If Smith costed you a 3rd there is no reason a team will pay way more for what can be considered a watered down asset.

When trading for a player very few teams are going to actually give up an NHL player whos under team control for years, for a rental, let alone add an additional asset.
This is Reilly Smith, who the penguins acquired for a 3rd round pick. Cuylle alone gets more than a 3rd round pick right now.
The retention isnt even that helpful because we'd now also have to replace Cuylle, and Smith isn't a massive upgrade from him.
