Habs Offseason
So at least hab fans are including a first round pick now. But no. This is still selling low on Kakko AND more importantly, thats a lot of mid, with a 1st rd pick.
The only thing I move Kakko for is a top 6 NHL player on a steal of a contract, or an A+ prospect.
The rangers are a top 3 Eastern Conference team, his play isn't dragging us down, his cap hit isn't dragging us down. We have 0 incentive to move him for less than an insane haul.

What forwards would you be willing to part with. My concept is giving us another young D in a few years.

Yup, thats exactly what Thomas is.
Now remind me how far into the playoffs he's carrying the roster you have?
STL is currently selling off. You sold off last year. You dont have any prospect better than the two being offered.
You're sitting in the dreaded middling of drafting. Not quite good enough to make the playoffs, not quite bad enough to get a bedard without an insane amount of luck, and youre also locked into contracts like Krug, which means you can't add another top end player from UFA.
So Yes the Blues should look at moving thomas now. Before he asks out and ruins any and all trade value, because you wont be able to make the playoffs in the next 5 years at this rate.

I understood that. I'm saying that offers worse than the thomas one. The Thomas one at least is valuing the player appropriately and paying heavy. The argument im getting is on the retention.
Which is why im paying heavy.

Trading away a player who actually fits the window when they're hoping to be a regular playoff contender for help today makes no sense.</div></div>
I dont disagree with the first point. I'll say that you can't have an entire team full of skill, and thats a big reason I think Lindgren would be a fit for CBJ, he would also be a really solid voice in the room who's been on a team in this exact situation.

I'll ignore the retention part for now,
ANA was open to moving zegras, his defensive liabilities are the reason hes been struggling. Mika is still very good defensively, putting him ahead of carlsson and McTavish would give them a much different roster composition and ready for the playoffs now, not in 4 years.

Im aware that its heavy retention. thats why its two top prospects plus the first. The only type of deal that nets both of those players is something for someone like Mcdavid. Thomas isnt even a top 10 center. He's a very good center, I'd even say he's elite, but the only reason for those two prospects would be the retention.

Because the rangers don't need to move him.
He makes under 2.5 he's gonna make under 2.5 next season. He's currently a middle 6 defensive first player, whos struggling to get his offensive touch back.
He's 23 years old. He's not 38 and terrible. He's a season removed from 40 points, while bringing high end defense to a team that struggles with that.
The rangers need to take advantage of a player who's making under 2.5m not move him for a player who immediately needs an extension.

CC signed an 8 year deal, Kakko took a short deal to bet on himself and it hasn't exactly worked out for him YET, could still turn it around.
I don't see how Gabe and Otter are positives for Kakko. If anything he just sees more competition for his top 6 role and if they come in and get that role then it just pushes him further out the door</div></div>
He's back in the top 6, he started the season in the top 6. He got hurt...
The only thing he's not getting is pp1 time.
People are assuming that he's on the verge of bust territory, but before the season Laf was the player who were concerned about, not him. Last season he put up 40 points, with almost all of them coming at ES. Thats a 50-60 pt season with very strong defensive numbers. Thats a solid d+4 season.
Kakko's defensive ability is something most of the other wingers in the top 6 dont really bring, and his game is perfect for the playoffs. We're not moving him for scraps or short term.

Kakko had 18 goals playing on the third line. Not the top of the lineup... Raddysh had 16:00 + minutes per game. Kakko's never gone above 15:30.
Laf is breaking out now that he's getting a consistent 16+ minutes per game on a top line. Kakko just needs time as his game is more defensively structured than Laf's.
We're not moving him for anything but another kid his age or younger.

WTF is with that rangers trade. Do you actually know the value of your own players? Tanev isn't worth a first on his own. Let alone that pile of 3/4 line players your adding to that pile, maybe adds up to a first.
Then you want schneider AND kakko on top?
There are times when you should probably not publish a roster. This is one of them.

Ny Rangers FAKE
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aecliptic</b></div><div>The Rangers would be incredibly dumb to not take advantage of the situation, ala the Bolts, and leave him on LTIR until after the season. Why rush a kid back into the lineup who is 1 hit away from eating soft food for the rest of his life? He needs a solid month of practice, with contact, with the team before even remotely considering putting him in the lineup.</div></div>
Because thats not it works? If he's cleared as ready to play, by the teams medical staff (and they dont lie), and the league finds out, the rangers would be heavily heavily penalized. The bolts took advantage of a perfect scenario, not "oh he's healthy at game 55, but we cant wait another 30 games".
Once a player is medically cleared, theyre off the LTIR.
As for practice, its typically 1 week no contact, 1 week full contact.
And if theres zero setbacks, then he's good.

We're fine in our top 9.
Those two healthy push everyone to slot in the right spots out of the forwards, and you may even end up with Wheeler as the Healthy Scratch.

How much would the rangers off for this package
The rangers can't afford this package with the uncertainty around chytil. Kakko is already skating so he's going to be back sooner rather than later. But Chytil is probably another month or so away.
This package would be asking for an A prospect + 2 firsts.
So 2 firsts and probably Perreault. And theres absolutely no shot the rangers pull that trigger.

Sharks offseason - Buying Bad Contracts
Goodrow is a real nhl player, and for some reasons teams value his "grit" and other intangibles. The contract is bad, but he's still valued.

Kratsov was definitely givven a first round grade, just not a top 10 one.
He was definitely a risk/reward pick, but yeah I dont disagree clark missed badly on him and andersson. The following 10 picks though weren't exactly slam dunks though. So Its not like the rangers missed a sure thing at 9.
I like the idea of wahlstrom, but Im not moving jones and skykora for him, and I dont want Bortuzzo. Id say something closer to a 3rd for Wahlstrom and we're good. He's a buy low candidate and a 3rd is accounting for the rangers needing to overpay Lou.
