Description
The Penguins are juggling a lot of balls right now. Bad balls. Injuries as usual. Inconsistencies especially from goaltending. Pittsburgh have been eliminated early and have been unsuccessful for the playoffs 6 years in a row now.
2017-18 Won 1 Round
2018-19 Lost First round
2019-20 Lost First round
2020-21 technically missed playoffs Lost First qualifying round
2021-22 Lost First round
2022-23 missed playoffs
The one common factor is Mike Sullivan. Penguins are on their third GM and the roster has changed a lot too.

Not like Anaheim is competing. Goalies don't have good value so don't expect something amazing. Gibson is somewhat better than Jarry, jarrys still good. The reason pens do this is to shed cap which is why there's retention. Carters ok but 3 million makes all the difference with competing teams so fans complain

So what's in this for Anaheim? Instead of $6.4 million for Gibson we pay $7.375 million for Jarry plus the retention? In what universe does that make sense, never mind your agreement with our assessment that Gibson is a better goalie than Jarry. You think that a crummy over-the-horizon second is sufficient compensation for that, never mind the two cap dumps?

So Gibson is better, but you want us to eat 8 million of his contract, take the worse goalie back, take cap dump Carter, threw in a depth forward, and our payment for ALL OF THAT is a 2nd round pick three drafts away?

Nah, we'll just keep the better goalie. You can have Stalock for that offer.

Jarry has been excellent this year. It's a dumb idea to trade him.

And Schenn sucks. I'd rather run a 3rd pair of POJ-Ruhwedel which is very good and cost effective.

Schenn doesn't suck. Great defensively and great physically. poj and ruhwedel arent good enough. Honestly we dont need poj, aka another offensive dman if hes not getting enough pp time he wont become anything special. Which is what's happening so far. We already have two future HOF d in letang and karlsson and we're win now. Ruhwedel is good enough for last pair or 7th d. Ideally 7th d on a cup level team.

Wouldn’t know why you’d think Gibson is better than Jarry, Gibson has been terrible for the past several years, and even this year jarry has been better. Not sure why some pens fans want to trade goalies right now since all 3 goalies we’ve had play have good gsax and save %s. Right now that’s not where our struggles have been. Also if carter would be willing to waive he would’ve been moved I can almost guarantee that.

The Pens goaltending hasn't been close to an issue. 50 goalies have played 8+ games - Jarry is 10th in GSAx and 11th in save% via MoneyPuck. And he's 7th in GSAx via Evolving Hockey. Overall the Pens are 5th in goals against below expected, and 7th in save% via Natural Stat Trick.

But all of this is moot anyway most likely because of the inclusion of Carter

POJ is 100% good enough. He proved that last year - and we know now that the reason he hasn't been playing this season is because of injury. I'm fine with him being trade bait for an improvement at another position, but he definitely is good enough.

Ruhwedel is a fringe bottom pair dman for sure, but the Ruhwedel/POJ pair actually performed pretty well, although a small sample size of course.

Schenn is awful lmao. He can't skate and the Pens don't need physicality and his contract is terrible. POJ and Ruhwedel have very good possession metrics, it's just that they don't put up many points or have a flashy playstyle. For a combined AAV of 1.65M, it's hard to do any better in terms of a balance between cost-effectiveness and getting good results.
