Patrick Marleau was apart of the J.T. overpay signing tree....Of course the Leafs still would have Drafted Amirov a couple spots higher so, that point's a non factor. Trade Kapanen to regain that 1st Rd pick.

If Dubas didn't sign J.T. , the Leafs would have not been forced to trade Marleau, they would not been forced to overpay the young core 3 players, they would not been forced into trading Zaitsev and Brown for nothing, they could have kept Kadri, they could have added an big name free agent Dman, they could have kept Hyman. The list goes on forever, the J.T. cause and effect tree.

JT wasnt overpaid though......

Marleau's deal was just bad for the fact it was a year to long. Everyone knew the moment that deal was signed it was 1 year to many and they paid for it

Lesson learned which is what we saw with Bertuzzi

Dubas would have to make a swing deal with Seattle to keep McCann, trade Kerfoot and have them pick Holl.

No way, at that time could the Leafs manage the cap with McCann.

Throwing big money to J.T. helped the young core 3 player agents see weakness in Dubas which allowed all 3 young guns expose Dubas and create the $40 million social club.

Not really

Nylander didnt really win his fight and 6.9m was a steal

Matthews was gonna get paid and never wanted 8 years. Worth every penny given.

Only argument the start to Marner but since then hes lived up to that deal with strong performances and pushing for 100 points. Like he was in the Selke convo last year

Really nothing there to argue for good players get paid. Could be worse could have 10.5m and doing nothing like Huberdeau.

At the time there was an argument for why it had to be done.

He was a point per game guy last 4 year in Florida and at the time just had 115 points. Had to pay the guy. Nobody expected CGY to kill the offense or play drive that man had.

Its not like JT where he just got better on his new team despite growing past his prime.

Honestly been joking maybe he goes back to FLA via trade and all of a sudden the offense comes back and he has 100 points lul

Its like the saying goes not every player is meant for every team

Some do well on specific teams others dont

It took years for Huberdeau and Barkov to create that magical chemistry between them, that made both into a PPG players.

That is what Huberdeau is missing.

%100 right, the Flames should look to trade Huberdeau back to the Panthers.

Oiler fan taking shots at Leafs management 😅, I’ve seen it all. Hindsight is always 20-20 but no team has had more dumb luck than the oil, only to have it ruined by consistently horrible decisions by management. Only the Canucks and senators come close to the tire fire that is the Oilers management record

Your defence just got a lot worse, Toronto needs Rielly. I will give you that Reaves, Klingberg and Tavares shouldn’t have been signed. I also don’t think Danault signs in Toronto

Im so curious if they had added Eichel would Huberdeau have been better. As we know CGY was pretty close to an Eichel deal

Maybe those two would have replicated the magic. As so far Kadri, Lindholm, and Backlund have not
