Help me out VAN fans. I understand this may need tweaking, but is part of the reason for moving Garland to free up space or just looking to change things up?

We would be interested in moving him to improve the right side of the Defence. POJ just doesn’t help us.

What the Canucks are reportedly looking for in a Garland trade is an NHL RHD and to free up a bit of cap space

If the Canucks aren’t doing the retaining in this trade like you proposed, I do think they would take POJ + a 2nd

not retaining for multiple years. otherwise I’d say the retention on Garland is going to be at 1.9M max

as a neutral observer VAN would be insane to not take POJ for Garland retained at 35% or whatever, let alone with no retention and an extra second

You are right about half of this. The proposal above Van would be insane not to take. But if they are retaining 35% that wouldn't be a good deal for just POJ.

Ahh gotcha. Unless maybe getting Garland off the books in this trade opens up the space for a secondary trade? I mean if they can make a hockey trade, Garland for an RHD straight up, that would make more sense, but they can flip these futures for an RHD.

Yeah, it doesn't have to be MTL and I know that part of the retention may need a little more from the Pens part, but I think maybe another prospect or maybe an additional 3rd would do it. The 3rd party team doesn't have to take an unnecessary/unwanted player and with the cap going up a lot, it will be fairly insignificant for whichever team takes it. MTL, PHI, CHI, etc...

I think the 2nd gets used for third-party retention. I'm not sure if it's enough to get the full retention though. So maybe it's like Canucks retains 0.5-1m and gets JPO, third party retains 1.5m-2m and gets a second, and Pittsburg gets Garland 2.5m retained.

    This seems good for all.

Yeah, I think some machination of what I proposed could be reasonable, and worth it.

From the Canucks perspective for sure. I leave the evaluation of Pittsburgh side of the deal to you.

I love Garland and think he's severely undervalued. Him on that contract retained will be insane value imo. That being said he's just a bad fit with our team structural with the way the roster is designed.

Not every player is a fit on every team. I think he'd fit the Pens system well. If the Pens don't have to give up a first, Pickering or Yager to make all this happen, then I think it's realistic.

No way they need to do that. I think this does it. Only thing better would be an RD. But a cheap young LD does it IMO. With the cap space you give the Canucks here, they can go find that RD somewhere else, like Peeke.

I meant more to whichever third party team would retain. They may try to up the stakes, but I think since they wouldn't have to take an actual player they don't need keeps the cost reasonable.
