Pettersson wants to win but sure he's definitely gonna sign long-term with a sh*ttier team
As apposed to the Canucks? They are thoroughly mediocre, yet they have almost no one noteworthy coming up the prospect pipeline/young players that could break out. There is a reason they were ranked as one of the worst teams when it comes to U23 on the team/prospects in the system, in the league during the summer.
Meanwhile Montreal was one of the best because actually rebuilding gets you good prospects and upcoming talents instead of staying in mediocrity. Meaning they will actually have young growing talent around him with more to come.
I'm not saying that Montreal is going to be fantastic guaranteed, but there are very few teams who have what it takes to make a trade like this happen AND still have a team on a really good trajectory afterwards. And if I am Pettersson, a team that isn't going to be only relying on me to have any chance of winning (like the Canucks), that's the type of team I want to go to. Obviously you want to go to a team that could win right away, but all of those teams either have their 1C figured out, or couldn't afford him.
A potential top 6 of the future
Caufield-Pettersson-(2024 draft pick most likely)
Newhook-Dach-Slafkovsky
and a potential D-core of the future
Guhle-Reinbacher
Hutson-Mallioux
Matheson-??? (Maybe Barron)
Would be fairly enticing I imagine (obviously it wouldn't turn out exactly like this because teams change a lot over 2-3 years, but you get what I mean)
