Quick question: Does Johnson have 1 year left? If so, I really like this for the Leafs

IMO, it's years too early for the Hawks to do something like this. Three high picks, plus Raddysh (who likely can be traded for more high picks), and Reichel (who could be a piece of the Hawks' long-term future) is WAY too much. I'm thinking a move like this could be something to complete a competitive roster (a la bringing in Hossa) AFTER building that competitive roster. And coughing up that many high picks could seriously and negatively impact the rebuild.

To say nothing of retaining on TJ (who may also be a TDL move for yet another high pick).

Bottom line, IMO: at best, this is too soon for the Hawks. At worst, it could derail the rebuild.

Than this deal is exactly what I wanted for the Leafs... They get a player that will help them now, a player close to coming into the lineup and can easily be a star... get a 1st and get 2 2nds... Chicago doesn't mortgage their rebuild and keeps Bedard happy and gradually become more competitive, it's a win-win IMO

My thoughts exactly. There will be some Hawks fans who will hate this deal because the think Reichel is the 2nd coming of Kane but I would rather aquire Nylander sign him build the team with him as part of the Hawks core. Nylander is only 27, his Dad and Brother both played for the Hawks I think he would love playing on the right side of Bedard for the next few years.

And it's not like the Hawks are in a cap crunch, unlike the Leafs, and can sign Nylander to that 8.5 mill+ extension to add to their core

The Hawks have a ton of cap space because they have no core!

Like I said, too early - at best.

So why not build one? You would have Bedard, Nylander, your 2024 1st guy, Korchinski and Nazar, and that's off the top of my head... That's a nice core

I agree, they're still reasonably 3 years away from being a real contender. There is a real temptation to try to become a contender overnight by throwing money around, but even for a legit star-caliber guy like Nylander I'm not sure that hurling a bunch of money and assets at him will accelerate the process much.

Similar argument against spending big this summer - people were acting like overpaying the likes of Tyler Bertuzzi would make this a playoff team when in reality it would just create tomorrow's cap problems.

A core consists of TEAM of proven NHLers, IMO. Nylander would be the only member of the core you just named who has even played one NHL game! No prospect is a guaranteed, core player (except prolly Bedard).

At this point, the Hawks "core" might be Bedard and S. Jones. Adding Nylander would make three. That's not a core, IMO - it's a start.

The rebuild like the one on which the Hawks have embarked will likely take three to five years. To build a "core" requires hitting on a lot of high draft picks and a lot of luck. Then would be the time to add a FINAL piece to the puzzle.

Hey, I could be wrong... Reasonable minds can disagree. Cheers!

Yeah, this is year 2 IMO, the Hawks have a bunch of guys coming up and it's not like Toronto's 2025 pick will be a lottery one... Or Chicago's in dire need of Tyler Johnson... obviously no prospect is guaranteed... But if you're an A+ tier one, you're more than likely going to make it IMO. I forgot Jones was onto the Hawks... That's another guy who'll be there for a long time

I do agree with the last sentence though... Cheers!

Even if he came with an 8x8 extension, this would be awful for the Hawks. Which wouldn't happen anyway, because he wants $10M.
