Wait what? They're BOTH expiring. That's the whole point! If Hanifin is adamant about wanting to get dealt, this would give Calgary another crack at keeping the defense decently good. Perhaps they also sign somebody like Pius Suter to backfill for Backlund.

I would not do this if I were the Canes. They are both on expiring contracts, but Backlund is 34. Skjei is 29. He still has some extension life left. I would love to have had Backlund as a depth signing but we're done with that now. We need that one remaining elite forward piece.

Skjei probably has Calgary on his NTC.

If Calgary trades Backlund it's because he doesn't want to stay. They'd be looking at picks or younger pieces. Probably not for another pending UFA that they aren't likely to sign

It's incredible how difficult it is for some people to see a concept they don't agree with, even something as benign as a pretend hockey trade, and not be able to restrain oneself to personally insulting a stanger.
