One Trade

Description
I’d like the Blues to trade one forward and one defenseman. Since the defense are hard to predict, trading either Kapanen or Vrana would be smart for the Blues. It doesn’t need to be now, but at some point during the season before the TDL would be perfect. I’d like to receive a B-level RD prospect.

As for Devils fans, getting Vrana at a low cap hit is pretty low risk. Tell me this postseason line up is not scary:

Meier - Hischier - Mercer
Bratt - Hughes - Toffoli
Palat - Haula - Vrana
Lazar - McLeod - Bastian
Ex: Nosek and Foote

Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Hughes - Marino
Smith - Miller
Ex: Bahl

Vanecek - Schmid

For Blues fans, we are creating opportunity for Neighbours here to crack the Top 6 and help him succeed. I think he plays well with Schenn and played really well with Blais during the WC. With this trade the Blues can then decide who they want to play in the NHL next year between Bolduc, Dean, and Snuggerud. With 3 replaceable contracts off the books potentially (Blais, Kapanen, and Sundqvist), there are unlimited opportunities for the Blues to prepare for next year.
Transactions
STL
  1. Casey, Seamus [Liste de réserve]
Détails additionnels:
B-level RD prospect
NJD
  1. Vrána, Jakub (1 312 500 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Scoring touch now who would easily fit in the Top 9. Was on pace for 57 points in a full season during a brief stint with the Blues last year. Won a cup in 2018 and will carry a $1,312,500 cap hit with retention. Can resign too if Toffoli walks after the season. Really low risk at that cap hit. Plenty of D prospects for the Devils too. So not losing much here.

Pass. Casey is better than you think he is and we would rather give that top 9 roster spot to Holtz.

I thought Holtz would be a 2024-25 roster candidate

Very hard pass. Devils don't need a project 3rd line winger, rather go with prospects. Also, Casey will outplay that value.

All I’ll say is if another timeline happens where Vrana scores the Game 7 OT winner for the Devils to win the cup, the value would be there

He was a 2021-22 roster candidate and then made the team last year before being benched repeatedly and sent down. If he struggles again this year he most likely gets traded to a team that can afford to let him figure it out at the NHL level.

Oh sure, let's trade one of our best prospects in a stacked pool for a third liner who might maybe score an overtime goal in a hypothetical game 7

Yes precisely my point. Thank you for agreeing with me. But in reality, is Casey a top prospect? I figured they were deep at RD cause Nemec and limited NHL spots since Hamilton and Marino are signed long term.

Just because you have an excess of things, doesn't decrease their value. Casey is VERY good. Big find in 2nd round.

These guys are friggin' hilarious. Casey is a 5-9 160 lb. Dman who almost certainly isn't going to be able to defend for crap in the NHL, AND his offense isn't near to being so good that it will make up for it. In other words, massive no thank you. On top of that, offering them retention turns this into a massive overpay for a guy who maaaaaaaaybe can be a sheltered 3D someday.

So yeah, this doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me. We're trying to get away from the Seamus Caseys of the Dman world, and I'm not interested in throwing away assets and $ for piffle when that asset looked a whole lot like a 30 goal Blues scorer this spring. Hold onto him, let him score and if need be deal him at the TDL for something that we would actually want.

You're right in that the Devils RHD is a little stacked right now but Casey should be developing in the NCAA or AHL for another 2-3 years anyway.

I could easily envision a scenario where Casey develops as well as you'd expect him to whereby it'd make sense to trade Marino for a haul sometime in the summer of 2025 or 2026 and roll an RHD corps of Nemec - Hamilton - Casey from that point onwards.

This is going to blow your mind and all, so maybe grab a towel, but NCAA hockey is waaaaaaaaay easier than NHL hockey, especially for guys who might blow away in a medium stiff wind. You go ahead and find me all the 160 pound star Dmen in hockey history.

Heh. Just for starters, Casey is the definition of a B prospect, dude. Neighbours is not. You could argue all day that Casey's ceiling is theoretically higher, but that's not the same thing.

No, he's not. A player who puts up Casey's stats as a freshman in the NCAA is not a B-prospect. He was drafted high in the second round and has heavily outperformed his draft position. And when did I say anything about Neighbours? I wasn't comparing them. They don't even play the same position.

1- Being able to do stuff in NCAA hockey and being able to do that same stuff in the NHL are two vastly different things, man. Being great in college and being a great prospect are also not necessarily the same thing. I really don't think some folks are comprehending what would be asked of a 160 lb Dman, which right now is what he is. He's super small, guys. Do you really think he has some glorious top 4 future ahead? I mean, I suppose it's possible, but let's be realistic here. We'd be here into next week if we started listing all the great college players who were either too small or too slow to translate their skills to the top level. And then on top of that, there's all the guys who made the NHL, but were never much more than honest effort journeymen. If you think he's an A prospect, cool. I won't argue with you. I think it's very clear that he is not, and I have not seen any prospect pundit rating him as an A. I'm not saying he's bad or even that he cannot play in the NHL or that he'll be a big bust or anything like that. I'm saying you might need to temper these expectations a little. Or you can dunk on me by listing all those 5-9 160 pound top 3 NHL Dmen I'm forgetting about.

2- My bad, I thought you were referring to Neighbours as the B prospect in that sentence. I hereby strike that part.

I think you're looking at old numbers on his size, from his draft year. On his current team site with Michigan he's ranked 5'10", 178 lbs. That's also what Team USA has him at. He's just not that small. He's the size of Torey Krug or Jared Spurgeon. If he can continue to put on muscle without neutering his speed, he'll end up Brian Rafalski-sized. He also could easily end up playing forward instead of defense in the NHL, where his comparatively small stature is even less problematic.

Heh. Bringing up Krug when the topic is "small Dmen not being able to defend well enough" is not helping your case. Trust me on that one. tears of joy
